The soldier has been in Europe The Soldier has been in Africa He has been in Honolulu He has been in Samoa He has been in niederlands He has been in France He is tired and may rest
The lyrics make a person think as to what soldiers might feel on the battlefield. "I never met, talked or knew the person I just killed. What life did he have? What ambitions did he have later? What was he doing at home trying to feed his family? What could he have achieved?"
We right-wingers have a saying called "no more brother wars", but if i shot a commie dead, i could give less of a crap what their ambitions were, because clearly those included my nation's death.
@@fallout1953 First of all, Right-wingers never made or had such a quote they literally are against the one thing you said. Second of all, how in the world can you even imagine taking the life of a person just because they have a different ideology. Imagine how utterly monstrous you have to be. Remember that violence is never the option and must always be the last resort unlike whatever you are saying. Also, your earlier comment state that you are a racist fanatic and a Neo-Nazi or a sympathiser so, everything you say will not be taken as valid debate at all.
@@icouldbeanyone.9345 I disagree. "Muh different ideology", i could use the same argument against them, besides, their ideology is the destruction of all national bodies (they have a special bias against Europeans). No, i'm just a man who cares for his people, terms like "nazi" are just made-up slurs against people who aren't misanthropes.
@@fallout1953 What the hell are you thinking? No ideology wants to destroy European countries, preferably. What even are countries? They are political concepts created by humans to justify their actions and divide their land. And no, you are a Nazi or a proto-nazi if your think that some races are superior to others. You wrote it in one of your own comments. Stop livong in this paranoia that everyone wants to destroy your country or is an enemy of a sort just because they have a different ideology. Misanthropy means hatred towards humanity and you clearly are one if you think that killing people on ideological lines is fine and jolly. National bodies should not even exist, all humans are equal and will remain equal no matter what anyone says. You are just a paranoid fool.
Germany throughout history (especially Prussia) was known as a very militaristic nation, but no wonder people didn't really want to go at war. Even in the most disciplined and militaristic powers, people just don't war, they just want friends and a happy life where everyone can come together and sing and dance as one :)
@Alturnes-Knight in europe war happened mainly because of ethnic problems, in ww1 france ,italy ,serbia ,romania ,bulgaria ,all wanted nations who incorporated all the people of their kind but this will always make other nations unhappy either because loss of land means loss if their own people or loss of power and status
Germany at the time when this song is written were quite liberal to be honest, Prussians have their fair share of liberal revolutions in 1848, even Bismarck was a big liberal before he rose to power, so its not really surprising that the ordinary Prussians were not so militaristic and don't really want war.

Peaceful nation... I cannot hear it anymore. We are one of the biggest arms exporters. We attend any war which was started by the US. We were 20 years in Afganistan. We send weapons to a brutal dictatorship (Saudi Arabia), where heads are gettin cut and we are proud to be a "peaceful nation". And to taro taytoman I want to say: yes, a strong economy. But there are two problems: first: one of the greatest money source are weapons. Second: the wealth doesn't come to everyone. The wealth isn't distributed fairly. War is one of those things that we can get rid of humans are too greedy and self obsessed we think of the interests of ourselves before those of people who may not be so blessed with our circumstances (I’m also guilty of this as well) humans have a very hard time of understanding the suffering of let’s say as an example an Afghani citizen in a entire different continent it’s not our faults humans just aren’t able to be the most empathetic and caring all the time especially with people we can’t even see but it helps to at least have a kind of mentality that people not just your neighbors or the people of your country can and will suffer if wars are continued to be fought

Nie lubię krwawego życia z bronią, by bronić siebie, patyk powinien starczyć. Och, powiedz mi, do czego potrzebujesz żołnierzy?

Jestem żołnierzem, Choć o to nie prosiłem, Powołany, Nie byłem pytany, Siłą wzięty, I wsadzony w koszary, Upolowany, Niczym dziki zwierz. 3. Jestem żołnierzem, W dzień każdy i noc w marszu, Miast pracować, Stać muszę na warcie, Miast wolnym być, Muszę salutować, Widząc bezczelność Towarzyszy swych. Idąc na bitwę, Braci swych morduję, A żaden z nich, nigdy nie skrzywdził mnie, A wten kaleki, Medal swój założę, W głodzie zakrzyknę: Byłem żołnierzem! 4. Bracia moi, Czy Niemcy, czy Francuzi, Węgierscy, Duńscy, Czy z Holandii ziem, I niezależnie, w jakim mundurze, Miast ołowiu, Podajmy sobie dłoń, Więc nie zwlekajmy, Wróćmy do swych domów, By wyzwolić lud nasz od tyranów, Tylko tyrani muszą ważyć wojny, Ja chcę być żołnierzem wolności! Ja chcę być żołnierzem wolności!

I remember visiting the German military cemetery for World War II dead in Normandy. I walked a row of headstones. They were ten on either side, two names per stone. Forty men. Of those, a quarter of the names read only "Ein Deutscher Soldat." We Americans pride ourselves on memorializing our unknown dead. It was a chilling realization that no one seems to care about those unknowns.
Probably because of how germany in ww2 was. It is rememberd very badly (mostly for valid reasons of course). German soldiers are not as often seen with pride, even if they fought as though and brave as others.
I made a Dutch version of this masterpiece!
I am German and live about 20 kilometres away from the Dutch-German border in a small coastal town. I also speak Low German, or "Plattdeutsch". I can almost entirely understand your comment. It amazes me how similar our languages really are.

That's what I also thought, but after reading the book, I've got to say it's an absolute must, it provides a lot more different sutiations and it's overall a much more complete anti-war experience. What I also like is that there are very few times we're the characters sit down and talk about war, for the most part it's just all the horrific sutiations being portrayed very barren
Fun fact: The picture in 1:10 is a picture of a Hitlerjugend (Note: Hitlerjugend is a Hitler's military group that it's soldiers are consisting 12-18 years old boys that are trained to defend the Western German borderlands against the Allies) crying when he came back to Berlin just to finding out that his family are dead because of Allied bombardment.
That is kind of the sad irony in Germanys history. It was always a place of great diversity (countelss states and regional cultures in HRE) and thinkers, philosophy enlightenment, craftsmenship and so on... but on the other hand also had a strong culture of obedience (feudalism and later especially prussia's loyalty-based militarism) to authority...

what about 'Ungarn, Danen'?

@Alturnes-Knight cope lobbyist
@@user-vk1dv3pr8o what did he say?
Germany at the time when this song is written were quite liberal to be honest, Prussians have their fair share of liberal revolutions in 1848, even Bismarck was a big liberal before he rose to power, so its not really surprising that the ordinary Prussians were not so militaristic and don't really want war.

Tak, z domu,

Zawsze, gdy o tym myślę,
czuję ogromny smutek,
czuję w piersi,
wzrost mocnej złości.
Jestem żołnierzem,

Nie lubię

Och, powiedz mi,

Wyłącznie z żądzy władzy
i by zaszkodzić ludziom,

ah, złote pola!
Jestem żołnierzem,

zamiast pracować,
muszę zostać na moim posterunku,
zamiast być wolnym,
muszę salutować,
i widzieć arogancję
zuchwałych kompanów.
I gdy idę na bitwę,
muszę mordować braci,
żaden z nich nigdy mi nie zrobił krzywdy,
dlatego jako kaleka,
zakładam wstążkę i medal,
a gdy głoduję, krzyczę:
Byłem żołnierzem!
Wy wszyscy bracia,
czy Niemcy, czy Francuzi,
czy Węgrzy, Duńczycy,
czy z Holandii.
Czy zielony, czy czerwony,
czy niebieski, czy biały twój mundur,
zamiast dawać innym rządzić,
powitajmy się braterską ręką!
Chodźmy do swoich domów
maszerujmy z powrotem,
by uwolnić naszych ludzi od tyranów,
bo tylko tyranie
muszą prowadzić wojny,

W moim sercu,
Ciepły gniewu błysk.
2.
Jestem żołnierzem,
lecz tylko wbrew mej woli,
Nie przepadam,
za błękitem mundurów,
Nie przepadam,
Za krwawym zbrojnym życiem,
By bronić się,
Starczyłby zwykły kij.
Powiedzcie mi,
Po co wam są żołnierze?
Ludzie chcą tylko
W spokoju żyć.
Stroniąc od mocy
Zadawania bólu,
Stąpając po
Złocie swoich pól!
3.
Jestem żołnierzem,
W dzień każdy i noc w marszu,
Miast pracować,
Stać muszę na warcie,
Miast wolnym być,
Muszę salutować,
Widząc bezczelność
Towarzyszy swych.
Idąc na bitwę,
Braci swych morduję,
A żaden z nich, nigdy nie skrzywdził mnie,
A wten kaleki,
Medal swój założę,
W głodzie zakrzyknę:
Byłem żołnierzem!
4.
Bracia moi,
Czy Niemcy, czy Francuzi,

Czy z Holandii ziem,
I niezależnie,
w jakim mundurze,

Want alleen tirannen, willen oorlog eren.

Where are you from if i may ask?
It's the same melody as a french napoleonic war song called "te souviens-tu" !
do you remember too?
1:41 Was true, whenever you are Dutch, German, French, Austrian, Hungarian Yu should be friends instead of battle
What we should all be able to agree upon is this simple truth: War is horror
Okay
Ironic
It does, there's also a french anti war song "paris pour un beefsteak" which uses the same melody
and "Paris pour un beafsteak"
After All Quiet on the Western Front, this hits diffrent.
Yeah
@Guest 1337 Oh I should write it a sad fact
Another reason to hate war
So sad 😭
a song that doesnt portray the german people as obedient robots
That is kind of the sad irony in Germanys history. It was always a place of great diversity (countelss states and regional cultures in HRE) and thinkers, philosophy enlightenment, craftsmenship and so on... but on the other hand also had a strong culture of obedience (feudalism and later especially prussia's loyalty-based militarism) to authority...

@@sansunderfell8765 Very true. May the world stay at peace. For the most part. A war between the US, Russia, China, and Europe would be devastating.

This song states a lot of truths and makes me quite sensitive too, those brother wars in the 20th century were a disaster, and both sides were losers technically, so many people that died for nothing and nothing, may the rest of the world be in peace too someday, and may Europe preserve its brotherlikeness
>so many people that died for nothing and nothing

I'm russian. This song is just true. It's heartbreaking. And I'm dying internally every time i read news about new horrifying cruelties that ppl of my country made. And it's so painful to see and to talk to person who is brainwashed. I remember how we yelled at each other, because I'm antiwar and he's pro war, he was almost as an uncle. He went out, saying that we all (me and my family, who is also anti war) are fascists. War and propaganda makes something very terrible with people's minds.

I have never imagined that german song can be so peaceful. Great song.
There’s something about the background at 0:40 that makes me uncomfortable. I think it’s the fact the boy is so young the helmet doesn’t even fit right. World War One may have been the most brutal war since the khan invaded, everywhere. I’m 16 and I don’t think the boy in the photo is much older. I’ve been learning about World War One for the last 5 years and it haunts me how so much people went to battles in this war not having the slightest idea of how horrible it would really be. But we know.
They boy appears 14-16 and yes,WW1 was one of the bloodiest for youth, the youngest person in the German army was a 10 year old news paper boy,
