How Atari Crushed My Dreams.

  • So I ordered some new stuff from the new Atari. Two CX78+ controllers, a 5 ft. extension cable, and a copy of Fatal Run. I tested it on my Atari 2600+ and actual Atari 7800 to see if it worked. I also tried the new game pads on the 2600+ and real Atari 7800. There's only one slight problem with this shipment and I have some advice for Atari's future shipments...

    Number #1 rule - Never buy directly from Atari. Their shipping time sucks (many months later) and so does their packaging (lack of proper) techniques. Amazon has lightning speed shipping, and if you don't like how they packed it, you can easily return it for a full refund/replacement. For the most part, all items offered through Atari can be purchased from Amazon. And on another note... I want a fresh copy of Robotron 2084 and Dark Chambers for the 7800!!! Just my two-cents!!! Love your channel, Greg & GAME ON DUDE!!!

    I really want to like the 2600+. I got one, and it has reignited my passion for gaming. Started playing games that I loved as a kid, but I noticed that I kinda sucked at them now. Then I got a 2600 jr, and suddenly I was much better. It was all lag not my failing eye-sight and reflexes. Note, this using the same TV, just different inputs (composite vs hdmi). The lag with 2600 games on the 2600+ is relatively small, so it's only on certain games that I notice it, such as cosmic arc (the asteroid field). So next, I picked up some 7800 games and they seemed to have even more lag. So, that lead me to pick up and repair a 7800 which has become my new go-to device for 2600 and 7800 games. I know that the 2600+ uses a different emulator for 7800 games, so maybe that's the cause of increased lag?
    I bought the new controller, and it's been great! I'm definitely eyeing Ninja Golf and Food Fight, then I can also check if the lag is present.
    Thanks for doing these videos, they're great!

    Packing it the way you show won't help. That box will turn over many times from them to you which would also crush the box.

  • @jonbourgoin182
    @jonbourgoin182 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

    I work in shipping and whoever shipped your items broke the cardinal rule, that items in the box must have enough packing material so that the items inside the box cannot move. Had they done that, the game box probably would have avoided being crushed. It's also possible that the box was already damaged prior to shipping and they sent it to you like that anyway.
    1:47 also that would not have prevented the game from not being on the bottom when you factor in that the box is gonna be flipped constantly in transit. The people who handle packages do not give a shit, even if it was covered in fragile stickers or "this side up" stickers.

    • @GregsGameRoom
      @GregsGameRoom  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Maybe. The real problem was forcing the box closed like I showed at the very beginning. That’s what really damaged the game.

    I recently took possession of a 7800 Pro system that came with a couple of dozen games, but the original joysticks don't work, so I'm waiting for these CX78+ gamepad controllers to come back in stock so I can get a couple.
    I've considered getting a 2600+ now that I have game cartridges, but that emulator delay is just not acceptable.
    I just need controllers that work.

    Greatly enjoyed the video. Thank you for the review. My experience has been a little bit different. I preordered everything with amazon, and not atari direct. Amazon has decided to ship every item separately, and with even worse care than atari lol. Fatal run came fine, but they decided to ship food fight included with a bag of dog food in the same box and absolutely crushed the box far worse than yours. Two extension cables shipped individually, one crushed by usps. The only thing that came undamaged were 2 controllers. And of course, what I wanted the most, Ninja golf has not even shipped, so I'm sure I will be waiting weeks for it to arrive, considering my 2600+ preorder was over a month late via amazon. Good times lol.

    Nice video. I love your metal Pac-Man poster! I feel that despite being an iconic game for the 7800, with beautiful graphics and a wacky concept, Ninja Golf gets old quickly. It's just more of the same, over and over and over again. And that's my biggest complaint about 7800 games in general, they get boring quickly. The same can be said of Fatal Run, I feel. These games are available in Australia from Big W and JB Hi-Fi, but I just don't like them enough to justify spending 44 AUD (about 30 USD) on them. Maybe Food Fight. I think I like that one best of the 3. But my favourite original 7800 game from back in the day has got to be Ms. Pac-Man. What an awesome port! I'm not sure about the controllers. I sold my original 7800 euro gamepads because I thought they felt a bit spongy & nowhere near as good to play with as say an NES gamepad (heresy, I know :D). Instead, I got myself a micro-switched joystick which works really well for - you guessed it - Ms. Pac-Man.

    I have an original first run Atari 7800. Had to convert that weird two prong jack to a standard barrel connector. But overall? I love my Atari 7800. Has quite a few unique games like Food Fight, Desert Falcon, and Ballblazer (has the 2nd sound chip). A decent Galaga and Xevious Port. I don't know if they are still in business, but Atari CA has rebuild kits if you still have the original joysticks for the 7800. The only problems with them stem from usually the carbon dots being dirty, or the worn plastic ring inside the stick. I bought a set of joypads from Atari to complete my 7800.
    But as for Atari? I do suggest caution. They have a bad habit of packing things and having no popcorn or air pads to fill the boxes so damage is really a problem with them. I also got an Ataribox and it really is a good machine when you add a copy of either Ubuntu Linux, or Windows. It's an emulation beast and really plays the classics (Including 7800) pretty spot on. It's a good buy when it is on sale. I got the Onyx Edition for 129.00 and it is both my server and emulation console. Keep up the good work on the Atari videos!! It's a good deal if you can look over some of the problems they have.

      The 7800 controllers were originally designed in 1983-84, and thus that style was the expected standard back then. When the 7800 was eventually released in 1986, it was only after sitting in a warehouse for two years. Furthermore, the superior European controller (CX-78) came out in 1987.
