NO 📺 TV show today comparable to Bewitched. But another Cute TV 📺 sitcom comparable to Bewitched during that time was I Dream Of Genie. Both Elizabeth Montgomery and Barbara Eden are the Beautiful Symbolic Blonde Ideal.
That's because women finally decided to stop being treated as freaking property to be ordered around and not recognized as equal members of a married couple partnership.
This scene is shown out of context. Darrin and Larry Tate had a fight and Darrin quit his job. Samantha and Louise Tate cooked up a plot to anger their husbands, make them leave home to go to their club and hopefully patch things up.

I wonder if the show would have been as popular if Dick Sargent had had the role from the beginning. There certainly was better chemistry between Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York.
The show was over as soon as Dick York stopped playing the role.
Sargent was gay in real life and a friend of Elizabeth’s before Bewitched, there’s a lot of factors to think about. Personally I prefer Sargent, I found him nicer. I found York’s Darrin too screechy and controlling, I didn’t really feel true love between his Darrin and Samantha. I felt more warmth between Samantha and Sargent’s Darrin
Elizabeth Montgomery was just playing a role.Who played Darrin was irrelevant to her.
Sargent and Montgomery were both actually friends in real life with actual chemistry in real life. I'm convinced the only reason people say this kind of thing so much is people have an "originality" complex. Just like people act with original Star Wars, or Trek, or cover songs, or blah blah blah.
York looked like he desired Samantha

Mark Zappasodi to me York always seemed angry not flustered. That's why I'm one of the people that preferred Sargent to York. I remember watching this show as a kid thinking why does she put up with Darren she could do so much better. And the way he treated her family he just made it worse.

Love this episode DOUBLE SPLIT. Sam and Louise cook up the scheme to teach their husbands a lesson. Sam made sure that Darrin didn't get that job he interviewed for by making him act like a two year-old child. And when Louise suggest to Larry that it might be better to move out as well. So Sam calls the club to see if Larry Tate has arrived and to find out what room Darrin is in. She did the rest with a twitch and the clerk puts Larry in the same room as Darrin.
It just goes to show, that outwitting a witch isn't easy, especially if that witch just happens to be the wife of a certain mortal. 🙂❤
By the way, I love the scence where Elizabeth/Sam is feeding and singing to Tabitha. Sam, what a wonderful mother, as was Elizabeth. R.I.P. Liz, Dick, David, and Irene Vernon. Your work here and others lives on.

Dick York is so great!!!!! Bewitched is my favorite show, from when I was growing up... There is nothing on TV, that compare's to this wonderful show!!!!!!! I watch it everyday, and record it too, only with, Dick York!!!! There are no good show's anymore!!! The old show's, The Honeymooner's, Andy Griffith, That Girl, Mash, The Big Valley, The Munster's, etc..... They all have pleasureable meaning's, no swearing, no nudity, just pure fun!!!!!! 👍👍😁😁🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹.....

I was reading some information on Elizabeth's post BEWITCHED work and it mentioned that she watched what she ate, played tennis, and biked. As for her personality, I've read comments from those who worked on BEWITCHED that said that Liz was a very kind and sweet person. Alice Pierce called her the "real McCoy

Don't be too annoyed with Dick, after all, it was the writers that created his persona . I feel that the casting did a great job putting them together. A very realistic couple, even if Sam is a witch.

I love all those pre-politically correct themes in the show. What's interesting is even with all those non PC references, the show was still somehow very UN-PC in that it championed women's rights, gay rights and black rights at a time when it was in the news but only if you were a hippy. Not for Suburban white people. So the show was so ahead it's amazing to watch now. It's a wonderfully tantalising mix of the very traditional notions of what a wife and husband are, mixed with the very bohemian themes of jetsetting, partying witches and warlocks who show this completely "other" transgressive lifestyle! Love it! Even I dream of Jeannie didn't have these same kinds of progressive themes. I think Elizabeth Montgomery herself had a lot to do with how the show was written and acted. She was ahead of her time and a great gay and female activist and role model. Just a terrific gal.

@@JasmineSurrealVideos yes dick Sargent was their original choice for the role and so that's why they gave it to him once York was too unwell to continue but sick York was by far the better comedic actor and choice for the role. One Sargent came in, the series began to go downhill as all the magic and chemistry in the marriage was no longer there.
Robert Blake just missed out on getting the part of Darren. He would have been perfect in the role, wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase.
Darrin usually angered me to no end.

Before its time
She thought of him as an idiot, but she was the one with a very short memory and very little critical reasoning skills. She forgot what her mother did, and how incredibly successful Darren was without her. She never realized that she was an albatross around his neck. We’ll never know if it was intentionally written that way or if it was purely accidental.
If this were real life, I'd hazard a guess that Darrin wouldn't have minded witchcraft half so much if his mother-in-law wasn't constantly casting all kinds of spells on him. He didn't find out Samantha was a witch until after they got married (she was wrong to keep that from him) and before he got a chance to get used to it, Endora started in. Samantha should have told her mother to stay out of her marriage or else stay out of her life.
Sam was a mommas girl who never stood up to her mothers interference and controlling nature.

I never understood why they changed Darrins without explanation. They had the greatest reason why. Witchcraft! They could have switched actors and it could have been because of Andorra put a spell on him & couldn't change him back for some reason.

I think they did it the best way possible. They are Actors. It would have hurt the story line to wrote it into the script. Both Darrens were similar enough for it not to be such a huge distraction. But I agree The first Darren for the part better.

Love Samantha, hate Darren, it always disgusted me how much he basically hates her, as long as she acted like a typical American house wife everything was fine, but the moment she did anything to remind him she's a witch he'd lose it, being a witch wasn't her little hobby it is a big part of who she is, her family and heritage, and he never really accepted it or her.
Right and if they did a next gen Danny Phantom Sam Manson/ Fenton would always be proud of who he is why not Darin with Samantha .
Geez, get a grip, will y'all! The way Darrin felt about Samantha's witchcraft was the entire premise and context of the show, it's what drove the whole story and provided most of the plot.
Samantha was the one who lied about her "heritage" all the way up until their wedding night, and who knows if she would have even told him then, if Endora hadn't pushed her into it. Samantha knew all along that he wanted a normal housewife and married him anyway. You're also talking about the early/mid 60's, when it still wasn't common yet for society to have "career women". Most women who did work only did so until they got married. For the time it was set in, there's nothing wrong with Darrin wanting a normal housewife as his mate and one who didn't use witchcraft to accomplish everyday household tasks as Darrin was a proud man and a down to earth hard worker who found that doing tasks is more rewarding and prideful when you put real effort in, instead of simply twitching your nose and having instant results. Stop applying 2020 standards to a show set in the early 60's. And frankly, there's nothing wrong with a man wanting a normal housewife for a mate in present day either.
Samantha also lied about her real age too, which was another crucial matter that could have changed his decision about matrimony if he knew beforehand.
Darrin had every right to be upset and frustrated. On top of Samantha's lies, he had a meddling nuisance of a
mother-in-law who berated him and ridiculed him for simply being a mortal, basically his "heritage". You don't seem that upset about that though? Not to mention all the cruel spells Endora cast on him.

Not to mention he doesn't like her using magic, except when her magic can get him out of trouble. And he is constantly telling her what to do. Their relationship wasn't 50/50. Only in the later seasons things started to change a little bit.

Nikolas Brady I couldn't agree more! Dick York had such chemistry together! Honestly, that's what made the show work in the beginning. Dick Sargent just didn't have it. He and Elizabeth were friends off screen but on the big screen, the chemistry just wasn't there. Ultimately, I think that what led to it cancelation. Only my opinion. Rest in Peace "Samantha and Darrin". We love you and miss you sooooo much!

I love Bewitched, but the way Darrin treats Samantha makes me wish divorce had been more acceptable in the ‘60’s.
They were in love with each other, that wouldn't have even been a consideration. I do wish Darrin was less of a self righteous prick, he had no idea how lucky he was.
To be fair, Sam didn't tell him she was a witch until after their wedding. If she'd leveled with him when they started getting serious and given him to think about that, things likely would been different.

I know it was a set up, but boy he certainly got steamed up all the time and angry, and rude. Yes it must have been difficult adjusting to being married to a witch, but he could have handled it better, he's abusive at times, and as I've been through this myself with men, I don't like to see another woman go through it, even on TV.
I love the show but only when he isn't in it, everyone else is great. They say its the times but it isn't, it happens today. Lots of men on TV then weren't like this, can you imagine how much fun it would be if she had married lovely, laid back and funny Dick Van Dyke?
You seem to forget that the Darrin character was meant to hey angry because it provides the tension in the comedy. Without his anger you wouldn't have a foil for the magic tricks and special effects in the show. If they cast a sweet, easy going, amenable Darrin where would the comedy come from? The whole comedy turns around Darrin having spells placed up in him and the hijinx that occurs because of it.
I quite prefer Darrin #2, thank you very much! He never got THAT crazy.

@@davidrahrer The word you were looking for is "Dick York", LOL!!! And yes, the guy had a broomstick up his rear, He acted like he was constipated and I was like "SOMEBODY GET YORK UNCLOGGED, NOW!" The guy was in bad need of prune juice LMAO! In comparison, Dick Sargeant was so relaxing, I keep watching his acting in the episodes currently airing on COZi and I'm like "nope, he still doesn't get mad" when Endora does her thing at him. He's so even keeled, so charming and pleasant... he's a breath of fresh air! XD I adore him! Sometimes I've even like "Get mad! Let her have it!" but his unique acting style is what is truly endearing here. The other actor was flat. One note acting: insanely crazy for the full 30 min. Yawn! I mean, don't get me wrong he's fun for 2 episodes, then... it got old fast. XD

Neither were suitable in my opinion, York got too angry and cranky with Sam and Larry his boss, and Sargeant was snide and slightly cross, less angry than York of course. It's a shame they wrote the husband to be so rude and disagreeable, I sometimes skip the bits they are in as I hate them being mean to Sam. A nice, easy going but slightly eccentric husband would have been so much more watchable, like Dick Van Dyke, Dean Martin would have been good too.
@@irened. you're completely wrong. The role of Darrin calls for a type of comedic acting which requires slapstick and a certain type of plasticity of the face which York had. Sargent was miscast and that is widely known and fans of the show generally agree that York was by far superior and more well suited for the role. You can have your opinion but it's in the minority because it's so plain to see for most people. Sorry.

You don't seem to understand how acting works or how casting works. Darrin was meant to be kind of fugly and goofy because that's what adds reality and charm to the show and the relationship. If they cast a typical handsome leading man it would've been unrealistic and too perfect and ruined the comedic effect. York's plastic face, and comedic skill make him a great Darrin.'he's a perfect counterpart to Samantha's cool, prim, pretty demeanour.

Yes, always thought Jim would be perfect as Darin in a Bewitched movie with his likeness and expressions. They screwed up the movie with stupid plot, should have brought Carey and Kidman together like the show alone. Much funnier.

I think Carey and kidman, with a better plot and cast than what they had, would've been a great team. Shame Carey wouldn't do it but he would've nailed the role and had so much fun doing it. Will ferrell was a Complete and utter disaster in the role of Darrin and should never have been cast. I'm not a Nicole Kidman fan but she was perfectly cast as Samantha because she comes close to looking so much like her and acting like her.

This is where feminism really started to gather up steam, you can see it in all the old shows. They were revving up for everything you see now. The plan worked perfectly, Darrin should have never married her. In season 1 she was all sweet and good, by about season 3,4 she treated him like trash.
She did it on purpose, with Louise, to get Larry and Darrin to go to the club to make up so they could work together again. Not really an issue of feminism but trying to get to friends back together. That's called slyness.
