I remember this was the only thing I wanted for Christmas in 2000. My mom got me the Tangerine one. I used it all through college. Last year I was helping my dad clean his house out and I found my iBook in an old box. She powered right up. I let my son use it.
Cuz people would open these the wrong way around hinge facing them the logo was meant to look right when the user was looking at the top of it was closes so people would open them the right way around
Nope. The Apple logo was upside down when opened on all Apple laptops until the Powerbook G4, where it was flipped so it was right side up when opened, but upside down when you went to open the computer.
I still have two of these, an Orange one 366 mHz, and the Gray one with the 466 mHz processor and with Firewire. Because of the Firewire interface, that iBook remained functional longer than the Orange one, but I think the Orange one looks pretty darn cool. My question is... how come none of the modern Apples, even the mobile devices, have handles!? The iBooks in this video have handles.
I had an Indigo iBook back in the day. Beautiful machines. I wish I still had mine. I would have it framed and mount it on the wall in my office. It truly was a piece of art!
I don't remember this commercial from back in the day. It's now one of my favs. Thanks for posting! And it has always bothered me that the Apple is upside-down on these and other pre-G4 notebooks! I think they did it that way so that the apple was facing up when you carried it. I still prefer it the way it is now!
i still want one of these iBooks. they look sweet. i have the powerBook, black macbook and a new macbook pro... it would be fun to have all the different styles.
I still have a Peach iBook! Its got 560 megs of ram in it now "yes it can" and running Tiger courtesy of Xpostfacto on a 300 mhz G3 and it still is great for web browsing and word crunching, and music. I'm also getting up to seven hours out of my "new" battery wireless web browsing. Any new laptops doing that?
@blackbird81298 Right. back then, the logo for was *you* to see, so you'd see it properly before you open and after you close your laptop. It made you feel happy to own what was at the time the world's most powerful and versatile laptop. It didn't matter that the logo was upside down when the laptop was open. Nowadays, the logo is made for *everyone else* to see. It glows and shimmers so that it catches the eye of everyone around you, so they can feel envious of your laptop.
I remember when these came out back in the late 90's. Everything CPU related at that time was all grey/black and plain. These laptops had personality portability when there was none.
@pwntimeblade Technically neither does Apple. They only have the housing manufactured. All the other internal components can be bought by anyone and assembled.
The first gen ibooks were pretty good computers they had very good battery life, were built like a tank and had a deceit video chipset. Early ones had rage pros and later ones had Rage 128s. My biggest complaint was that it had a 800x600 screen,no VGA out and only one USB port.
This is probably what you'll end up seeing if you've taken acid in front of your laptop computer... complete with words jumping out at you and a kaleidoscope of iBooks floating around.
I still have an orange one. I switched out the LCD, so now it has a 1024 pixel screen. These are really cute machines, very different and quite fun. They get online easily and most importantly... girls are attracted to them... get a clue geeks!
back then they wanted the user to see the apple right side up when they opened and closed it now they want others to see it right side up when its open
@setta91 Microsoft might have the largest desktop share but Apple is the second richest company in the world. I know your comment was 9 months ago but I thought you might like to know
I wish they would do something like this again for their modern MacBooks maybe something like a throwback special edition line of MacBooks in translucent plastic like these old iBooks and in all the colors of the old iBooks but with the specs of a modern MacBook
I remember this was the only thing I wanted for Christmas in 2000. My mom got me the Tangerine one. I used it all through college. Last year I was helping my dad clean his house out and I found my iBook in an old box. She powered right up. I let my son use it.
So you have expert
Toy story level comment right here
What can he even use it for isn't PowerPC processers unsupported now?
@@Paulygon Cool!
Omg!!!! I books
Ahhh the good ol’ days when the Apple logo was upside down. I wanted this computer so badly but my parents never bought it for me.
Yes old days
those are the coolest/best laptops ever created in history given the time in history where they were produced. I just wish I had one back in the day
I remember my elementary school had these and the colored imacs. They were the coolest things ever.
My school be like: we don't do that here
apple logo upside down :)
No idea why the apple logo is upside down
i think that design is for when the mac held in hand
🙃
(:

I love how it shows you it's capabilities and it's features. I'm glad it's not all about looks.

Probably a nineties thing.
You are a time traveler!! :O
Probably because apple wants to keep their notebooks light and thin
I miss my iBook clamshell...
I had an Indigo iBook back in the day. Beautiful machines. I wish I still had mine. I would have it framed and mount it on the wall in my office. It truly was a piece of art!
0:22 wawawawawa
IBook clamshells need to come back!
@@eggnoggies481 well apple could make a MacBook SE with the same colors as the iMac.
Yes
wtf no
@@Surreal_Cow MacBook SE
M1 Processor
8gb RAM (can upgrade to 16)
Touch ID
Same colors as the new iMac
12 inch screen
SOUNDS AWESOME
@@caleblastname6969 I agree

i love the sound effects haha

omgosh i wish Apple have some sort of anniversary edition for these iBooks or something, I LOVE THEM!!!
it was 2 years ago that my school replaced those macs with other ones
I have the orange one. I wish they still came in such fun colors
@jezerstrecht apparently they did that so when you carry it, it would be right side up
I actually had one of these when I was in kindergarten.
CREEPER 125 HD AUTTP your still a toddler
I bought one of these last week! :D
I had one in 2nd grade. They were actually very durable.
Looking at it, it is amazing how thin this thing was, even in this day and age. But the big selling point, the amazing CARRYING HANDLE!!!
Somtimes I wish I got an IBook insted of my IMac G3 but I still love my g3
Bruh iMac G3 is more of a legend
But the ibook, idk
Apple changed that with the PowerBook G4 Titanium (and the iBook G3 white). Steve Jobs even pointed it out at the TiBook-introduction-keynote.

pop design. cute.
Here before Apple releases new MacBooks inspired by the iBook.
i liked the older ones because they were colorful, but I have a white macbook and I love it, wouldnt trade it for anything. YAY MAC!!
I remember when these came out back in the late 90's. Everything CPU related at that time was all grey/black and plain.
These laptops had personality portability when there was none.
The logo being upside down depends when your looking at it. Wen the lid is shut it won't be upside down!
@pwntimeblade Technically neither does Apple. They only have the housing manufactured. All the other internal components can be bought by anyone and assembled.
Proud to say I own a 1999 iBook G3 Orange Clamshell, with 576 ram. Works well for it's limitations.
idk wht they thought it would be cool to sell a clam with a keyboard in it...
The first gen ibooks were pretty good computers they had very good battery life, were built like a tank and had a deceit video chipset.

yes the screen resolution was the biggest hurdle for buyers.
I remember when I had one of these.
@stogi5959 yeah, and the stability and virus protection of windows??
My school used these up until like 2005
I really like apple's old computers's design
i only ever wanted one of these because in legally blonde, elle woods had one of these..
its okay 9 years later i got a macbook,
I love the iBook G3. Best computer Apple ever made.
how much did they cost in 1999 new?
This is probably what you'll end up seeing if you've taken acid in front of your laptop computer... complete with words jumping out at you and a kaleidoscope of iBooks floating around.
Can i still buy these? I mean do they still sell them? And how much does it usually cost?
I still have an orange one. I switched out the LCD, so now it has a 1024 pixel screen. These are really cute machines, very different and quite fun. They get online easily and most importantly... girls are attracted to them... get a clue geeks!
@mrlauts those are just spaces between the keys
Still have one. Love it.
those looked really different back then....but i still love my new macbook :)
lol i still have one of these
10 years old but i want one lol it shows how good apple are lol
My favorite design is the plastic white, like the white macbook. I wish they would do a MacBook Pro in that style, like a current model.
DEFINETLY i had this old gateway and its a white box :P we just got a new imac MAC RULES
i still have a aqua one of these and it connects it my macbook and works perfect
Why didn't they make a Grape one? Or a Ruby one? Or a Blue Dalmatian one?
god i loved these things
I wanted one of these so bad
do you think they realized they put the apple upside down?
Now I actually want colorful MacBooks
@blackbird81298 For some reason, up until the Aluminum PowerBook G4, Apple thought having the logo the other direction looked good
I think some laptops weren't beige before the imac
back then they wanted the user to see the apple right side up when they opened and closed it now they want others to see it right side up when its open
If Apple could update those iBooks with the same style, faster processor, and current OS, it would sell like hot cakes.
apple needs to bring back the colors
I love the original ibooks except for one thing, and that is the track pads. They feel so odd, I'm too used to multi touch now.
still want one
LOVE the upside down apple
@honam1021 you can hold down the control key
Hoping a redesign of the M1 MacBook Air for the second revision to compliment the new M1 iMac.
Me too! And I love it! I still use it...
Does he still use it
The Song Js Weird XD
Omg I wasn't born when I books came out!!!! 💻 💻 💻 🖥 🖥 🖥
I don't have any I books!
Someone should mod one of these to have the Apple logo turn when the laptop is turned on/open.
they need to remake this
The apple logo is upside down when the iBook is open. lol
here before everyone sees this video
HEY MOM, CAN YOU GET ME ONE OF THOSE PLASTIC CLAMS FOR CHRISTMAS?
I would love have a red macbook
The logo is upside down!
@Jact9 Control + click. I think it'll be fine for Mac OS X.
People must admit if it wasn't for apple then we all would being still using beige computers.
Omg I was not even born
@setta91 Microsoft might have the largest desktop share but Apple is the second richest company in the world. I know your comment was 9 months ago but I thought you might like to know
man, not weird they didnt sell, people thought they were those toy laptops for kids
Thumbs up if you are watching this on a pc
"Learn how to type for kids!" Ahh design
ino but on the new ones, like macbook air, macbook pro, ect.. i think they changed it
No, im waching this with my homebuilt pc
I SO AGREE. THESE ARE AWESOME!!
Now, plop a Core i7 or Core 2 in there, and it's the greatest computer on the planet.
I wish they would do something like this again for their modern MacBooks maybe something like a throwback special edition line of MacBooks in translucent plastic like these old iBooks and in all the colors of the old iBooks but with the specs of a modern MacBook
My fave

UUUUUH PRETTY COLORS : D
lol the apple logo was upside down when the screen was open
haha when you open it the apple on the outside is upside down xD
WHAT IS THE MUSIC
I dropped mine and it never started up again.
6 people's favourite colour is beige
lol i can stand my laptop up like that too
anyone notice they flipped the apple logo upside down
