Marvel already did a reboot, it was called The Ultimate Universe. They've done it two more times since with varying success. Tossing sixty years of continuity is not the answer, tossing most of the current writers and editors IS.

Reboot or no reboot. It doesn’t matter. Marvel and DC need 3 things:
A team of editors that can identify and recruit new young talent.
Executives that will cut big cheques with good realities for veterans like Brubaker, BKV, and others of that generation.
And a person in charge that can keep the continuity tight.

My favorite Spider-Man story happened almost when I got into the character. “Back in Black” Peter essentially meeting God asking why he had to suffer so much and God taking him to the beach and showing all the people he had saved over the course of his career “if I’m being honest I’m cheating a little bit with team ups”
That story line really resonated with me.

    • @FreddyKruegerRealEstate
      @FreddyKruegerRealEstate 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

That's also my favorite way that various writers have interpreted Superman aswell. He's all powerful so he carried the sins and burdens of humanity, which he really doesn't have too. But he does it because he loves this planet. There is something deeply resonating about a hero suffering when they never had to, because they give of themselves for others. Especially when a guy like Spidey suffers for a City that at times has been hostile to to him. Unike a villain like King Pin or Lex, who sees power as a rightful ends to a means - the best heroes see their power not as their own... but a responsibility (even burden) that they have to carry as a mantel for all those who can't.

I think the whole "a mini series of 4" is not that appealing to people in general. Would be much better to just wait and finish it all and release a thicker comic.

Please. As others have noted here, Marvel doesn't have the talent to pull off a reboot. It would result in more than half the characters becoming gay, gender- and race-swaps galore, and in the end, nothing very different to the slop they have today would come of it. The current crop of writers believe race-swapping is some amazing 'new' direction to take a character. They just aren't up to it.

Decades ago, around the time Shooter launched the New Universe, he had thought about doing a hard reboot. And I think he should have. He had the writers and the artists working for him to do a good job. Byrne left to work on Superman for DC. But imagine if he had been given the option to write Fantastic Four #1. Claremont would have loved to have rebooted X-Men. Simonson was working on Thor, I'm sure Shooter would have allowed him to finish his epic tale before having the series rebooted. Roger Stern was still at Marvel, so was Michilinie. I think Frank Miller was around, too, or would have been happy to come back to do Daredevil. Point is, there was a ton of talent to do it right.
Now? No chance in hell. All the good writers have moved in, Marvel either can't afford them or they won't give them the freedom to do the job right.

I don't agree that Ultimates died out because it "wasn't canon". I think it died out because it had one exceptional book (Spider-Man) while rest of the universe grew to be a gross take on the characters nobody wanted, from incest twins/voyeurism to having the blob eat Wasp. Nobody WANTS that to be canon. So they stop reading.
People will invest in a new parallel canon if you give it to them. It's exciting to think some writers are going to take the sagas written by multiple generations of writers before them, polish them up and take the best from them to tie together a purposeful narrative for the character again, the same way it was exciting to follow DCAU canon when it was building or MCU canon when it got started.
I do want a fresh canon or soft reset of canon be like the Ultimate universe because, current post One More Day....really post House of M canon is intolerable.
I'd love a new canon that retells the best of Marvel while fixing past mistakes and mixups caused by marketing department demands, drauma between writers and editors, and so on. I'd love to see past runs that feel like they had forgotten loose ends with waisted potential rewritten with the aid of hindsight. All in 3 to 4 neatly packaged trade paperback titles to follow along with.
But I also have ZERO faith that anybody working at Marvel would "fix" anything I want them to. Or even just write a fresh canon that's more bearable than the canon universe where Peter is a devil deal making cuck. You let current writers make a new fresh canon, and they will just use it to make Sue Storm a lesbian from the start, Spider-Man Miles Morales from the start, and Captain America a Nazi stand in for Trump from the start.
My greatest hope is one day the company decides to hire writers of all politics but splits them into having the left worries write one universe and the right wing conservatives write the other canon universe. Then I could read about my favorite heroes reliably in a full canon of books that aren't always pushing cringe stuff.

They don't need a Reboot, they need good writers and editors. We need another kind of Hickman's Secret Wars ”2”, well written, and get characters back from 10 years ago, get evil characters to be evil again, and choose which characters want to keep the last 10 years of history and which one wasn't.
There are characters, like Iceman or Hercules or even Spider-Man who have been destroyed in the last decade that I struggle to see how they would fix without removing a big chunk of their last decade history.

Then you jump back to either 2012 right after Secret Wars, or go further to before Civil War. I doubt they’d do that, but they do have an in universe reset button and a guy who can break the fourth wall to explain how he would know it exists.

What Marvel Comics needs is writers that can write and care about the histories of the characters they’re writing as well as older comics pros who give a shit about the industry, the characters, and the fans, not people like Tom Brevoort, who just seems like a curmudgeon, and CB Cebulski, who, just seems happy to get the paycheck.

When the Fantastic Four were missing the Guardians of the Galaxy appeared, when the X-MEN were absent, the Inhumans got a big push, when the Ultimate titles ended, All New/All Different was being pushed.
I honestly feel that the titles are tanked so that the creative teams want to leave Marvel. After seeing how Ed Brubaker was handled withThe Winter Soldier, it makes me feel that Kevin Feige is making the work environment hostile for teams that are working on titles that he wants to use for good, cheap movie plots.

And I’m actually fully onboard with reboots, I think they should reboot the universe every 10 years. Every 10 years you start from scratch, then over the next 10 years tell the entire life of the character, so at the end of the 10 years the human characters are all old and their apprentice has taken over.
Then reboot from scratch again, maybe taking the best new characters from the past reboot and continue their stories, having each reboot as its own contained universe.

Rebooting isn't something you decide in 2025 and execute in 2026. They should continue in the same world but where time passes now. Spidey becomes 30. Some super heroes age into their golden years. The young heroes might catch on now that they're allowed to advance. If this plan fails, then so what. You were going to reboot anyways. But lets try the things you'd never do, before blowing it up.

At this point I do think Marvel needs a full clean slate reboot, however not with the majority of current creatives and editors. Thinking about it the original ultimate universe should have been a full reboot instead of a side universe mostly because Marvel can't handle Spider-Man actually becoming an adult and because he is their flag ship it would've been better to reboot him back to being a teenager instead of a man child like he is now.
Also I feel like interest would've stayed higher in the original universe but ultimates 3 and ultimatum basically destroyed that universe. It just edgy and gross for shock value at that point, which I don't think stories like that would ever be allowed in a main universe.

Marvel has rebooted its universe, it was called Hickman’s Secret War. The difference between Marvel and DC is just that Marvel mostly ignores that all the canon is now just question marks as it’s difficult to define what exactly Franklin Richards got right or wrong.
That said, yes, Marvel’s strength was always to allow readers to return faster by not changing everything … that was until All New All Different Marvel. Now a lot of the Marvel universe is just off from where it should be, because it was forcefully changed to reflect political propaganda instead of its decades old canon.
PS: To answer your question: no, I don’t think a reboot would help, but not only for your reasons. My main reason is: nope, I don’t want a new canon built by the current talent, when all my hope rests on Marvel one day finding better talent.

Marvel has screwed their own continuity many times over without an official reboot. The Heroes Reborn, Spider-Man Clone Saga, One More Day fiascos were bad enough, but the worst was probably the X-Men running so far off course the core characters barely resemble themselves any longer. I won't even go into the "Ultimate" fiasco. Reboots are generally not solutions, they're cheap resets to avoid careful plotting, investment in long-term creative staff, and steady development in favor of flash-pan sales that fold in on themselves.

The Ultimate Universe got cancelled because Marvel Comics slowly started turning the 616 Universe into the Ultimate Universe. The more 616 became like Ultimate the more they started doing weirder things with the Ultimate line to differentiate the two. Like Marvel Comics basically killed the line with Jeph Loeb‘s The Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum. People were over the line after that, but that was done because the two lines were becoming too alike, but they only became too alike because the 616 line was intentionally turned into the Ultimate line that people liked more. There’s not really any point in an alternative line when you have the main line start operating in the same manner, then you just have two things that are the same.

Doing the _Spider-Man Wakes up_ reboot is a good idea. It gets rid of all the garbage and keeps the good stuff. It also gives marvel a mulligan on being able to reintroduce the woke characters but better. I can see them doing this reboot and then bringing Miles Morales into thing. Spidy is fighting Electro and Miles gets shocked and Spider-Man has to let Electro go so save him. Miles develops electric powers and Spider-Man end up teaching him how to us them. He can help defeat Electro later on.
Having Miles be a pure elect based hero would help him be his own character and give him a personal history with Electro. It'll be different enough for him to actually be his own character.
Also bring in Nadia as Hank and Janet's daughter. Hank has been punished for far too long. Let them move on, be married, and have a daughter. Maybe they can fix Kamala Khan too.

Marvel Comics does reboots, they just don’t do line wide reboots all at once like DC does.
Armor Wars 2 and Extremis are both Iron Man reboots that give Tony Stark new versions of his original origin story. Pre Extremis Tony Stark wasn’t the original Tony Stark, he was an aged up version of the teen Tony Stark that got brought into the present during that whole stupid The Crossing thing where it was revealed Stark was a traitor working for Kang.
The whole Krakoa thing was a reboot: Moira MacTaggert goes back in time, reveals something to Professor X that completely changes him from the Professor X you know, and they formed the X-Men together with Magneto... that’s not the previous main version of the X-Men. I’m not even sure how anything pre Krakoa is meant to fit into the new reality Moira MacTaggert made. Weirdo broken Professor X isn’t the same guy in those ‘60s and ‘90s X-Men comics.
When Ed Brubaker starts Captain America Vol. 4 with Out of Time, he’s completely rebooting Captain America’s World War 2 time into something more in line with The Ultimates. It’s a big reboot to both Captain America and Bucky. The Captain America Hydra stuff also completely rebooted things again and now “Steve Rogers” isn’t even Steve Rogers anymore because the real Steve Rogers is still the super villain that was always a member of Hydra because of time travel stuff that was never undone. Nothing Captain America did before the 2016 Steve Rogers Captain America comic happened anymore, or at least none of it could have happened exactly like it did in the comics.
I’m not even sure Spider-Man’s origin is really even his original origin anymore, I think it’s more like his ‘90s cartoon origin (which is what the Raimi movie used) now, and has been like that for decades.
Marvel Comics is in pretty dire need of a reboot. Everything is just too stupid in the comics now. They’ve messed everything up too much. The whole line is pass the point of no return now. I actually can’t believe how badly the people running the show allowed the comics to get screwed up. Like Captain America’s HAIL HYDRA thing. When that happened I just thought that be a story that went on for a bit and it’d be undone. After all, it was a pretty simple time travel thing, time travel stuff happens and gets undone all the time, and there’s no way they’d keep Captain America a super villain. Little did I know back then exactly how stupid the people running the show really were. Not only did that arc go on forever, (although nothing compared to the later Krakoa stuff that’s still technically going on) they never undid the time travel stuff that turned Steve Rogers evil...they just made a fake Steve Rogers.

But if Marvel does go through a reboot, it needs to be in its own separate universe or Earth because you shouldn't have to alter the main universe (Earth-616) just to start fresh with a clean slate. The DC Universe mistake was always altering the main universe when in reality the writers could've started with a brand new universe or multiverse that exists separately from the old continuity.

Yes, the Marvel Multiverse is hard to penetrate in depth. But that's what makes it so rewarding and addictive to fans. Once you start feeling comfortable within it you're hooked. You feel like you accomplished something. You will always have that multiverse in your head to escape to. Even if you stop reading comics for a while you still wanna keep up with what the characters have been up to. It's like Tom Hanks says in A League of Their Own: The hard is what makes it great.
What publishers have to understand is that comics are a niche industry. They always have been. Yes Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, The Avengers and the X-Men are household names, but they're mainstream because of movies, cartoons, tv shows, video-games etc. The comics are the canary in the coal mine. The lab where you can experiment. If you manage to become popular in the comics then MAYBE you have a shot of becoming mainstream via other outlets. The industry has to embrace the fact that they're a niche audience and cater to their base captive readers instead of trying to appeal to a wider audience. The base are the ones who are gonna bring in new readers, not futile attempts to appeal to normies. It's never gonna happen. Most people don't even like to read and you only end up alienating your base customers.

If Marvel is to be rebooted, it should be done so at a time when the cultural political influence upon movies is less prevalent. The biggest problem with superhero movies in particular is that the modern culture is attempting to wedge itself into a genre that is supposed to be escapist in nature and thus, ruins the experience and only serves to annoy the viewer, especially if the movie is taking a stance that certain viewers do not agree with.
Movies should be politically neutral works that focus on philosophical ideas and questions about good vs evil that hero films used to resonate with people of various walks of life regardless of ideology. It doesn't work anymore because movies appeal to one side of the political aisle which only alienates everyone else who, frankly, doesn't want to hear it if they're watching a movie about people with super powers saving the city. The current movie industry does not allow for this, especially Disney. Only when Disney returns to a more neutral and I suppose traditional terms of storytelling should a reboot be considered.
