This brings back memories of the late 60's and early 70's living in Halifax, when we received TV signals on the VHS system and Granada as a result was just as good image quality as YTV,which was supposed to be the sole ITV provider.
Haven't heard this theme tune for years. Lived in the Pennine valleys but could just about receive Granada on 405 line (VHF) then had a new 625 line (UHF) relay for the town.
'March For Concert Band' by William Walton. Wrote into Granada c1977 to enquire what this music was and was told it was issued on the 'PYE' label. Never found it though. Closing sequence was used to 'play out' at closedown in addition. Brilliant piece.
The ITA flag lasted from November 1969 until the ITA Transmitters In Service slides were first introduced in 1971 then superseded by the IBA version in 1973.
I assume then that Granada along with the other ITV stations shut down late morning/lunchtime then back then? I note the time they resumed(I assume)broadcasting at,handy I bet as many of the staff at Granada TV will have had a nice liquid lunch round the pubs of Manchester then?
The ITA Transmitters in Service Slides were first Used in October 1970 and were Broadcast for 15 Minutes between 09:45 - 10:00 during trade tests after the ITA Engineering announcements which were then Broadcast on a Monday Morning at 09:35. This Continued until 12th July 1972 when the ITA became the IBA and The IBA Transmitters in Service Caption was Transmitted Ten to and Twenty pasty the Hour after the pictorial slide sequence during Trade Tests with a Voice over message also giving an audio description listing Transmitters in Service in that Region. Also on 12th July 1972 , the ITA Start up Caption seen above was replaced with the IBA Transmitters in service Caption as the Start Up sequence and was changed periodically as more Relay and main transmitters came on air. The Granada prelude was used from October 1967 to October 1973 and was replaced by a Dennis King Arrangement of popular ITV Series theme tunes on the air at that time. The IBA decided to replace the IBA transmitters in Service slides as their start up sequence in early 1978 with the Stations ID Caption and IBA Independent Broadcasting Authority in the lower part of the Caption.
Mr Freeze, leave it up. I have the Thomson version which is so lush. Great central tune. Should be on the Proms. These other comments are from sad people. Ignore them...
I remember it well, could only hear it once year whist on holiday with parents in Blackpool.
Its stunning piece of music by William Walton .
Yes, albeit a rework of "Orb And Sceptre".

This is really nice.

Have you heard the London Philharmonic/Bryden Thomson version? It is faithful to the Walton arrangement for orchestra. It is interesting with strings.
I have always liked the music and though it deserved a wider audience.

Okay I will remove it then if people going to give negative votes. It was only something put together from personal memory.
at least this is a better mock than that of Christopher Williams...he sounds like a sinister nerd!
I will give until 31st October and if its popularity has not increased I will take it down.
Sounded like Jon Briggs making the transmitter announcement?
It's a speech synthesiser, probably Siri's Daniel, which was made from samples of Jon Briggs's voice.
