    First thing's first, great job! Very informative, however as far as nutrients go I would like to offer some advice. The uptake of nutrients in a plant's roots has as much to do with the Parts Per Million of mineral salts (AKA nutrients) in solution as it is a balance of pH and temperature. Using a quarter strength solution may not trigger the roots to start taking up nutrients or worse it may start selectively taking up some nutrients and not others. Using too much will cause the roots to stop taking in nutrients and water and air etc. etc. momento mori my little plant friend. It has a lot to do with salinity and osmosis and I could go on forever so I won't. The manufactures of these nutrient products understand this and provide instructions to mix the proper solution. I use a nutrient mix at full strength per the instructions on every fourth watering in filtered water (Brita water jug style, city tap water and only run cold water through the filter) with a pH around 5.5. I filter the water the day before and let sit overnight with an airstone and fish tank pump so it's very aerated and at room temp when it it's time to mix the nutrients. Aeration of the water causes the pH to drop as does an increase in temperature so only add nutrients to room temp, aerated water then adjust the pH. I usually end up using a little pH Up with nutrients and pH Down on my regular water days to get that magical pH of 5.5. Honestly I've found that 70% of keeping plants healthy is conditioning the water perfectly. 20%, setting up an environment that while still hospitable to plants is hostile to pests and disease. And 10% TLC.
    Get a pH meter, pH Up and pH Down along with any nutrients you buy. Best thing you will ever do!

    that is quite the collection! :) I love it.. I'm in the same boat as you.. where ever i have space and light... there is a plant or 10...lol.. i get the evil eye all the time... i will need to start getting rid of things soon or even trade so i can try something new :) I live in Canada... we don't have the selection like the USA... so you need to work together to get interresting and unique plants :)

    You are right in soaking for a bit. The orchid media is so well drained you can’t just dribble water on the top. My orchids have responded very well since I did this. Nice video!

      Just don't over think it. people hear the word orchid and get scared... the truth is... they are just like any other plant... the biggest difference is these prefer to grow in bark rather than soil.... just remember to water it when it feels dry and give it a well lit spot and poof... you're almost an expert :)

    they should get food at least once a month. but if your plant is doing fine, keep on going with your routine :) there are so many ways to grow plants.. what works for your plants might kill mine and vice versa. so there is nothing wrong with the path your taking if your plants are happy :)

    I love the mat / Tarp.. my grandmother bought it for me about 20 years or more ago.. I first i thought it was silly but i love it now and glad i got it.. i think of her every time i use it :) I have seen them recently at Lee Valley tools. that company sells online so check it out :)

  • @PlantzNThings
    @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    some of my plants are in bark and some of my plants are in the clay balls.. to avoid them floating i fill the water to the top of the media... they do loosen in the pot but not float away... as the plants develop more roots that should anchor them better.. try propping your plant up with a stake that goes clear to the bottom of the pot to keep your plant from moving too much. you might even try a wire over the top to the root ball like they do with bonsai that should do the trick

    Hi Bill, I am using exactly the same fertilizer for my orchids and the label says to use it every time I water, even I don't and just use it once a month. Are you still using that brand? Also, where did you buy those clay pots with slits on the side? I would love to try them with some of my phals. Thank you in advance for your answer!

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I buy my clay orchid pots from Garden Gallery. The Hydroton pellets I actually got from a friend... but I have seen those at garden gallery too. The Phal is responding well to the hydroton but the oncidium really didn't like it so I transplanted that back to bark.

    Good job on explaining...it was just a little long. But I just watched a long watering orchid video where all she did was talk and talk about water and what's in water pointing the camera at the orchid sitting in the pot with water already..and how she watered it cause she had 40..I could not tell where the water line was..above crown or under moss and she said let it sit... but she did not show how to drain it. So in your video you actually showed what to do. Thank you

    I was watering my orchids once a week during the summer but now every 11-12 days. Used to run water through the media for a minute or so, but it was taking me way too long! I have over 50 orchids in the house some of them are still not old enough to bloom. But now I let them soak for 30 minutes or a whole hour while I do something else. LOL
    I just started using hydroton but I noticed that everything floats, even the plant! that's not good when they're growing new roots. what do you do about it?

  • @Angelofjusticia
    @Angelofjusticia 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I counted my orchids today and I have a lot more! HAHAHA
    I have 28 Phals'; Three of them have a keiki, 2 Dendrobium Aggregatum (Species), 20 Catts. 13 evergreen Dendrobiums, 1 Cymbidium, 6 Oncidiums and 2 Epicattleyas.
    I'm planning to sell those that are not too small. But that'll be once the weather gets warm. As I said, lots of them are very young and probably need a couple of years more in order to bloom. My house is really overcrowded and I don't want the husband to kick me out! ;)

    Hi, I loved your video, but not the comments of some subscribers. They should realize that you are doing a great service for free, and your information is great. I gave up growing orchids years ago as they took up too much time, but now kids grown, university degrees accomplished business flourishing, so I am back to what I love.
    And friends have confidence in my abilities as I just got a drop off of orchids on the verge of death.
    Will try to nurse them back.
    We have a drought here in So. California so I save rain water just for my orchids, and fill a bucket from the 55 gallon barrels I have. To that I add fertilizer as you do, but I have to water more often as most are grown outside, and the winds just dries them out.
    All in all you did a great job showing watering and repotting and I will save these tapes for future friends who will need help.
    Enjoy!

    I have another question that I hope you can help me with, thanks again for all the advice. I've noticed that when I water my mini phal that the next day the bark and the sphagnum moss media is practically dry and the roots look silver and still are wrinkled. Since I did buy it from a store I know it probably needs some TLC so I was wondering should I water it every two or three days? I know watering a phal varies however just from my observations it appears to need more water. I don't want to over water it though. Or am I mistaken?

    • @PlantzNThings

      interesting question.... the correct answer is that you should not re use your water to water other plants. the reason is that bacteria and fungal issues can easily be carried in water... so if one of your plants is infected it can easily transfer to your others. with that being said... I have re-used water in the past and I have been fine... but I don't make it a regular habit.

      Jenny Hernandez with most of them I try and water them once a week... there are a few that need to be watered a little more frequently. but that being said... it really depends on the media they are planted in. if they are in Moss you will likely need to water less frequently.

    So I am very new to orchids and recently purchased a mini orchid that looks exactly like your orchid on right and was wondering do I need to hand pollinate it in order for it to continuously bloom? I know this probably sounds like a stupid question but I am curious.

      +TheBrokenDoll6 actually no... if you pollinate them they will drop the flower and work on seed production. if you want long lasting flowers I wouldn't pollinate :)

      Would I eventually need to pollinate it or would it just come back each year with new flowers and such? What exactly does seed production in an orchid cause it to do?

      you should never need to pollinate your orchid flowers..seed production takes a lot of energy from the plant. if you are not able to germinate the seed than I wouldn't bother wasting the plants energy.
