My morning ritual includes staring at my orchids and other plants! Its so nice im not the only person doing this. It is very relaxing and exciting too, when checking buds and new growth. A WORD OF CAUTION: staying too long out on my balcony makes me late for work LOL
I do the same as soon as I get home and shower after work. I only have a few orchids but I tend to look at the clock at some point during my revelry and I’m always shocked. I love getting lost in looking at the roots & leaves (especially as they are forming), sniffing the medium, putting a tiny LED spotlight into crevices looking for exciting new growth or anxiety-causing issues... and spending long moments just mystified (in a good way).
i've just started collecting orchids i'm really excited , i hope they do well for me! I bought a few that are a little bit of a gamble because they seemed really dry, or root bound or damaged by the store but your videos make me feel like i would be able to save them! Thanks Danny!
Happy valentines day! I agree with what you said about paying attention to your orchids, a few days ago I noticed one of my den phals had a new growth, it's very good news, because I thought it was sick.
Love your videos!! I've been very lucky with mine. My first orchid had leaves that were so large I took them all off and kept feeding, ventilating and watching the orchid plant. It regrew and now I have three healthy leaves and it looks like a new plant. Keep learning from your knowledge. Thanks so much
I'm loving your videos! Thanks so much for the practical info! I started with a dud his colored phal and got swept away with orchid obsession from that point on. I always try to look out for crown rot when watering. My orchids enjoy a bit of spritzing with water in the summer months. I have great ventilation in my home and in the orchid pots. You're so right about that. It's so important.
Dominique Miller Hi Dominique, thanks for watching my vids I'm glad you enjoy them :) yes there are so many benefits to a good ventilation, makes the hobby that much more enjoyable :)
I have that same exact Lady Slipper Orchid Paphiopedilum Alma Gevaert she is beautiful. My orchid is in bloom right now, I just recently bought her from an orchid show. ;-)
Hi! I'm new to the orchid world, but am quickly falling in love. :) I have a lot of experience with plants in general, and have jungles inside and outside of my house. I've watched a few of your videos, which are wonderful, btw. Your plants are beautiful! ❤❤❤ I am wondering where you buy your clear orchid pots. I've looked around everywhere, it seems, and cannot seem to find them. The clear plastic pots they come in when purchased, just seem to be way to flimsy, and don't support my orchids after repotting. I do have them places in bigger pots to add more support, but I love how big yours are, and how they have enough support all on their own. Anyway, I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again. I love your videos, and I know I will have a lot more questions as time goes on. :) Thank you!!
hello orquid girl! Im from Argentina I have lots of orquids amd I love my hobby!! allway s watch your videos, exellent explanation and beautiful orquidss! Thank you!
My phalaenopsis leaves have round burn looking dying spots. I do have it outside in Tx. It came in a weaved basket with moss growing on outside of basket. It is blooming beautifully. Please advise if I should cut those certain leaves off ?
hi Dani.. I watch all your videos for my orchid care. They are of great help. I have a question about fungus on my cymbidium. I think it has fungus which I spotted black spots on some of the lower leaves. I don't know if it's from water spraying or what but I see you mention rubbing alcohol. How do I use it? Do I spray it directly on the problem area or wipe it on? I have both rubbing alcohol and a cinnamon alcohol mixture, which one works better? I have never used either on any of my orchids as this is my first time with a fungus problem. They are not in spike. Thank you
Hi Danny, I just got my first phalaenopsis and want to be sure I am doing everything correctly...you mentioned during the winter that it's best to not water from the top but to have it in a second pot with water at the bottom to let the plant soak it up by sitting in the water? Is there a certain amount of time that I should let the plant soak like that cause I know I've read other places that phalaenopsis orchids are not supposed to stay in water that way for too long cause it could over water them. Thx in advance any help to explain this is appreciated!
I have always had two flower spikes on my phil. orchid. In the past two years, only one spike appears. What can I do to promote that second flower spike? I do fertilize and water properly.
Hi Miss Orchid, love your tips! I am a fan of yours. one of my Phalaenopsis orchids, on its spike there is a leaf growing out of it, what should I do? Thank you.
I received a phone, unfortunately it was during an ice storm. The heat packs included were also frozen. Needless to say she lost her blooms and buds almost immediately. I cut the flower spikes, but I know have purple new leaves. Is this a sign of crown rot? Or something more sinister?! I've also noticed mushrooms appearing in the medium. I didn't repot immediately, but now I see that was a mistake, and plan to do so asap. I'm also received a mini Phall, of course in spagmum miss. The containers are tiny( two in the decorative container, with no ventilation holes. ) Which also had a very short bloom. Thank you for your videos, and the direction I'm hoping you'll give. Are you using the clay balls( semi-hydroponic) with all your Phals?
Hi Danny, I love your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make them for people like myself, who love orchids, but have always been "afraid" of growing them. I have a few orchids (phalaenopsis, oncidium, and bulbophyllum) and was wondering what you think about a cold air humidifier. I have a fan running on my plant collection and I mist them several times a day, but recently one of my orchids got a fungal infection (leaf) and now I am worried about mist water acting as a vector for fungus. Do you recommend a humidifier and, if so, when should I run it to prevent pathogens?
+Dorothy B Hello, yes I would totally go for a cool mist humidifier (ultrasonic) rather than something with steam. They are very good as long as you maintain ventilation and don;t position orchids way too close to it to form water drops. other than that they do a great job :) together with the fan it should be much much much better than misting (I never mist because it gets me in trouble lol)
Hi, Thanks for sharing tips about how to grow Orchids. I have a question, how did you make all these little holes on the plastic pot? Thanks again for sharing.
Hello Danny. Tnx so much for all the informative videos, it has really helped me to understand my Orchid better. There's just one thing i need to ask, I recently purchased a beautiful Phalaenopsis and i noticed the pot has only one hole for drainage at the bottom. I was wondering if it would hurt my plant if i try to put holes on the pot without taking out the Orchid and is there a trick you would recommend. Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge and experience so generously. I look forward to your advice... ;)
Amir Pasha Shah Mohammadi Hi Amir, well it depends on the pot, if it's the very thin plastic type yeah you could make some vents with a scissors or cutter, but just make sure you don't damage the roots :) if it's the hard type of plastic better not, it's too hassling. About propagation, theoretically you could reproduce them by seeds but the rate of success is low, since you need a sterile environment, special sowing media and about 5-7 years until they reach maturity, you could look this up on google :) it's not something I would do. Other than that, Phals can produce baby plants from their flower spikes or from the base of the orchid on their own. One way to induce keikis is to use keiki paste. Google it and you'll see what I mean. But it's not 100% reliable ;)
Hi, thank you for your response. I have repotted most of my orchids in clear glass vases / containers cos I think they look neater. I have placed a base of pebbles at the bottom. I however do agree with you regarding air circulation. So far I have not had a problem with root rot cos I don't water too often. I will leave them in the glass for a while and if I see that they are not happy in there I will go back to the usual plastic orchid pots. Of all the orchids that I have, only my old faithful "Jocelyn" cymbidium blooms year after year. I am still waiting for the others to bloom :-( I do have a nobile that i have planted in soil and it seems very happy in the soil. Do you have any thoughts on this.
+x yz well.. it's a delicate subject and usually I cannot really say what will happen because it will usually happen slow, so if I say that on the long run things might go bad, this long run can mean 1-2 years. Orchids are slow growers and also.. slow diers :P in any case, if you want to tryout stuff then you can, the best knowledge comes from experience. However when trying out new things it is better to keep a closer eye on those orchids just to spot problems before hand :) and also for experiments Phalaenopsis are the best suited orchids since they are capable to withstand bad treatments for quite a long time. Just watch the roots and leaves and you will see if things go ok for a while or go south :)
Hello, thank you for very interesting and helpful videos. Questions: You advise against getting stem and crown wet, yet the homemade spray for infestation, you sprayed everywhere? 2nd: You advise airing holes in the pots, yet most of your orchids are in normal "closed" pots?
Hi, ok for question 1: yep you spray everywhere, there is no other choice. But afterwards you need to dry the plants, so keeping them ventilated is a must. I like to just place them in front of a fan for an hour or so and this takes care of some excess water. On the second question, the process of nurseries is different, they have different environments than us and in many cases a lot more ventilation. They can also control temperature and humidity, so the balance in a greenhouse is way different and less prone to problems than our homes ;)
Hi Danny, im new to having orchids, but yet so inlove!!! You're video's teaches me alot aboute them. Im in South Africa so here we mostly get the Phalanopsis orchids. So my question is... I snapped a part of the crown of my orchid trying to get it upright as it was leaning way over then she sould. So will she be oky or did I just kill her?
My orchid has droopy leaves but has buds on the stem. I believe there is not enough moss to hold the water. It is not really bad yet but I need to do something. Since it has bloom buds , what should I do and when? Thanks so much.
Very good info. I started using hydro perox, thx to you :) To the first aid Kit I'd also add Propolis (I dk how to properly say it in eng) which is a strong natural anti biotic and also Tea tree essential oil (this thing is like magic. it kills all kinds of fungi ant also has anti bacterial and antiviral properties) PLUS it has an amazin smell!!! I use all this stuff as prevention AND treatment with nice results.
MissOrchidGirl Hey. Thx for the video on orchid fertilization when in bloom. Well I once cured a Phal luedemmaniana from a bacterial infection with propolis. But the thing is I mostly use it as prevention. I alternate it with tea tree oil and neem oil. Once a week. I always mist it in a solution of water and cocoa nut soap. I feel this helps to boost the plants immune system. And it's all natural. My plants almost never fall ill. Only now, we're having an extremely hot summer in Brazil. A lot of my Vandaceous orchids are heat stressed (since they stay in a really bright/hot location. Cause of this my Rhhync. Bangkok's got an inffectio. I think it's bacterial :( I'm trying to treat it with Propolis. Cheers
Gabriel Lisboa Thanks for the info I will definitely give propolis a go for bacterial infections, do you clean it off after applying? as I know it's kinda sticky :)
You should :) I mean just google propolis and you'll find a lot of references saying how strong it works as an anti biotic. If you apply it dilluted in water (I usually go for about 40 drops in a 300 ml spray bottle) it does not stick. And it smells kind of nice as well :) Happy growing
Could you please clarify the use of hydrogen peroxide? Should it be diluted? I believe you suggested using it to disinfect roots when re-potting. How should it be applied? Should the roots be submerged and for how long? Thank you; your videos are very helpful!
MissOrchidGirl i just started planting moth orchids becaus emy aunt is murdering herso my aunt let me taking care of it,it is abit complicated because i dont have a greenhouse and those hydrogen peroxide,it is hard to have one in hong kong
CryogonAlan phalaenopsis are easy to care for without a green house :) they like window sill conditions as long as they are not burned by direct sun. here is a video about them and how to take care of them, maybe it will help you more th-cam.com/video/Mce-ne6NyL0/w-d-xo.html
Hi Danny... just wanted to ask if you hand-tag your orchids if they don't come with tags? do you put anything other than names on them? because none but 2 of my orchids are specifically named, Cymbidium dayanum and Angraecum sesquipedale. I only know the genus of all my plants, so I might mess up when caring for them. Also for the two plants I could name, have you any care tips? thx in advance :)
Hi Wilson, yes I try to identify my orchids so I know more about how to care for them and also recommend them to my viewers who can purchased them with tags from stores :) it's a process that I show here th-cam.com/video/zN8ndi_FfYM/w-d-xo.html this doesn't mean these orchids can enter competitions or anything, it's just for personal use. You can write whatever other information you want on your tag, like when you repoted it and so on. About your orchids, the Cymbidium likes bright light and regular fertilizing during summer time but when fall comes, he likes a bit of a winter rest. The angraecum should be cared for pretty much like for a Vanda, likes to dry out, and likes very ventilated media. Also bright locations are very suited for it. Hope this helps :)
Hey MissOrchidGirl! I have a problem (or not) and I wanted to ask you for your opinion. So, you see, I have phalaenopsis gigantea, her flower size is more that 20cm in diameter, and I polinated the flower and 3 months have passed. It was 32cm long and 2.2 cm thick, so I though it was ready, I cut it, and sow the seeds in special media with everything sterilized with alcohol. So what the problem is is thgat the seeds inside was really not much of them, and they were very green and they were in this like cotton matterial. So the seeds are not very ripe I think, since they are very green, and not yellow, so I sowed them in media, and now - what should I suspect? maybie the seeds would ripe in the sowing media all the way? or I will gonna be getting a big jar of rotten stuff inside? I really want to get a positive answer, since I was so freaking exited, and now when I cut the seed pod and see that there is almost nothing inside, I almost lost consciousness! So what should I suspect? As I write this comment I am crying as hell now ;(
Hi, please stop crying, the good thing is you will have many other opportunities to pollinate your orchid :) she will re bloom in the next season with good care and love :) now I am not an expert on seeds, it is a bit too complicated for me at this moment, so I cannot say they will not make it. Keep hope alive you never know, but if nothing comes out don;t be sad, look forward to the next attempt and prepare better :) here are some links I hope will help you out th-cam.com/video/jVnB0okJHSA/w-d-xo.html as you can see, these seeds don;t look yellow either :) also this is the recipe for the growing media dokmaidogma.wordpress.com/2011/09/10/how-to-grow-orchids-from-seeds-kitchen-style/ and also Dane here on youtube has some informational videos, check out his channel th-cam.com/video/pFn1cqbTXqI/w-d-xo.html good luck and don;t give up, this is a journey, not a failure ;)
I heard about lemon is good to clean the leaf of orchid, I would like to know if it have to be natural or from bottle, lemon or lime, what other alternative? Thanks
Thanks for your very informative video,I've just started my orchid collection and I haven't really have enough knowledge in keeping them healthy and alive for many years. You mentioned spraying Hydrogen Peroxide to kill fungus that's attacking the the orchids. Do you have to dilute the hydrogen peroxide with water before spraying the solution? If it has to be diluted, what's the ratio of water and hydrogen peroxide mixture?
+Dely Smith Hi, usually in pharmacies you can find the 3% concentration one, this one you can use straight from the bottle no need for diluting. Any higher than this will need diluting but I never tried it, I can find 3% easy :)
Hi MissOrchidGirl, my question is probably silly, but I'll ask anyway. I happen to not have hydrogen peroxide at home, but I do have tea tree oil. I was wondering whether it is possible to use that instead of h2o2 in some dilution?
Hi Nadia, I think a video would be more useful :) but to summarize it, you need to think if it is beneficial for the plant to cut the stem and if yes, it is always best to cut it as to leave available roots on the stem you cut. Cutting too high where there are no roots will not guarantee a healthy plant and it will stress the orchid until new roots are produced, if they can be produced. So think about it before doing it :)
Thank you so much MissOrchidsGirl, that will help me a lot. I'm an avid fan of yours, I watch your videos during my free time. Thank you for the quick repply.
Hi,I have a question, you said you use tap water to water you orchids... I guess my question is do you filter the water at all? Or add anything to the water other then fertilizer? I've been growing my orchids for a few years now and just recently moved. My orchids have not adjusted very well and I believe its due to the water. The city water where I moved has apparently been known to have very bad/harsh water. I water them pretty similarly to your technique using tap water but they continue to loose color in there leaves (turn yellow). I could really use some help. Thank you for your video's!
Hi, well at the time of this video I was using tap water because it was medium soft (160-180 ppm) and had a decent ph (7.2-7.3). I was not filtering it in any way or letting it sit over night. I moved to another country last year and here I have very hard water (250-300 ppm) with very high ph (8) so I absolutely needed an osmosis system. I would look into one, they can be inexpensive for the basic ones, the aquarium ones, if you have very hard water, I can vouch that salt build up will affect roots a lot. Or you can also buy distilled water if you don;t have many orchids, just make sure to fertilize regularly with this soft water. Hope this helps :)
Do you have a preferred fertilizer? I just purchased three orchids that are in half bloom. I went out and purchased Miracle Grows Orchid fertilizer spikes, are those ok?
+Amanda Lafond Hi Amanda, I don't have a preferred fert just yet, I hate one though (Orchid Focus, it's too weak and not economical) but as long as your fert has a good npk ratio and also trace elements it should work ok :) I am switching to a fert for rain or distilled water soon so we'll see how that goes :)
hey can i use aquarium water to water my orchid. also i have it in a glass room where it gets some morning direct sun light then evening sun as well is that quite a lot .. there is direct and indirect/ shaded light on them. they get about 10 hours of light a day.
@MissOrchidGirl Do you have a video that discusses Phalaenopsis root health? I have several Phalaenopsis plants, and I see that some have bright and robust roots, indicating to me: health. But I have a few plants that have shriveled, thin, browning, or white roots. Could you talk a bit about these conditions, and what the proper care for them would be? My orchids and I would appreciate it. :)
Thank you, Danny for the tips. Can you give an advise how to get rid of mites(oribatidas). I tried different insecticides but they didn’ help. Maybe you have a tip to help. There is much info that they are not harmful for orchids but I just can’t stand viewing them.
Sorry I didn't finish my question. I don't have a lot of light were my orquids are, so I move them near a window that get a good light and then I move them back to the their place, but I need to know how long they need to be getting light in order to grow and flower. Thanks.
I would say about 10 hours minimum per day, but it also depends on the species, maybe Phals could do with less but Vandas and Cattleyas would love as much light for as much time as you can give them.. except night time lol :P
Hi i have just join your club and have a few questions since am new to orchids. I recently was given 3 Phalaenopsis. One have develop some dark spots on the leaves. how can i get rid of them spots. Next where can i get potting material to re pot as you suggested. Also what kind of fertilizer i need and where to get it. Thank you
Hi Luis welcome to the hobby :D well about the spots, they can be various things and I am not sure without seeing them, but a picture would help. just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :) About orchid supplies you can get them usually at any garden center, or store that sells orchids. The medium is especially made for orchids so you just need to check the label on the bag. I would suggest you try to find one made of bark only, no peat moss added. You can also find orchid fertilizers there, for now try to find a balanced one ( the label will read 3 numbers like 10-10-10, try to find one with similar numbers). There are a multitude of fertilizers as you will start to research more. Some are bloom boosters, some are high nitrogen content. Until you figure them out a balanced one will be enough and afterwards you can make your own opinion on what you should use :) Hope this helps and good luck!
Ohh, quick question. I've heard that cinnamon can be used to seal the spike when you cut it down. I'm allergic to cinnamon and really shouldn't even be touching it. Do you suggest anything else to use to seal the spike once you cut it or do you not feel the need to seal?
Dominique Miller oh dear yes stay away from cinnamon no matter what, your health is more important than orchids! ok you can use hydrogen peroxide 3%, nothing higher. Just spray a bit on the cut wound, it will sterilize it, not dry it but it will help :)
Dominique Miller PS: just thought of something, you could use baby powder to dry wounds, should act as a drying agent and is not toxic :) try it with one orchid, make sure you don't spread the powder on the roots though, they need to absorb moisture ;)
Thank you! That should work just fine. I've noticed the stem of one of my phals turning a pale green since I cut it back. Should I cut it down lower to get rid of the light green/yellow color or should I just leave it?
ow, well the 30-10-10 is useful in the growing phase of the orchid when it's not blooming, the high nitrogen content will help with leaf production and growth. The 20-20-20 is a balanced fertilizer and many people use it all year round. It is not a bloom booster, but it's a good fertilizer all around for normal orchids. You can use the 20-20-20 all year round if you don't want to hassle and some people believe it doesn't matter if you don't use a bloom booster. Since you have both fertilizers you can alternate them, use the high nitrogen one and then at your next fertilisation use the balanced one. It is more important to use a trace elements fertilizer, one that has other things like Calcium, Mg, Iron etc.
Hi Denni, I have a question for you I follow you from US, but originally I am from Romania do you have your videos in Romanian language I like to recommend to my sister and my friends who lives in Romania
+weng espinoza hello, I don;t usually mist orchids, but I will make a tutorial soon about misting, after I relocate and settle down. What orchid would you like me to identify?
Hi, at first a wanna say, that i love ur videos! (and sorry for my bad english..)^^ I've seen, u've got a lot of potts from germany but here in germany i can't find this kind of potts like ur's :/ where do u buy them?
Hi, welcome to my channel :D the pots were purchased at a German store called Hornbach, if you have it in your town go take a look, you should find them :) also Schwerter has them too, check them out here www.shop.schwerter-orchideenzucht.de/index.php?cPath=31_44
I am having such a difficult time finding some clear plastic pots for my orchids..would anyone have any suggestions of where to get some? Also, the roots exposed to the air always look dry, is this normal?
Hi Soraya, well each person has his own routine, some use a quarter of the amount recommended 3 times per month and the 4th time just water to flush out the salts. Some use them once a month. I personally feel comfortable using them twice a month at half the amount recommended and one normal watering in between. It's a routine that works well for me, so think about your lifestyle and how is it more comfortable for you. Whatever you do, never exceed the dosage recommended per water and per month, so read the label carefully :) hope this helps!
+Laura villagran Hello, well it might not be anything worrying, orchid roots do have some white pigmentation along their roots. But a picture would help to figure it out, if you want just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)
MissOrchidGirl thank you for the response here is the link with a picture I couldn't figure out how to share publicly I'm not to familiar with google + lol but again thank you!
+Laura villagran Hi, it looks like normal pigmentation of the root :) many orchids have them, if they don't stick out then you are good. However the roots are a bit suffering I think, those were the older roots the orchid came with?
i have a question!!! i bought an orchid from the grocery store today and as i was watching your videos and inspecting my own trying to get to know it and become familiar with what to do.. i found a slug looking thing on the outside of the pot!!! what is it doing there?!! and should i get rid of it? i hate bugs :(
Hi Alexandra, yes you should definitely try to get rid of slugs and snails, they can chew on the roots and leaves and even buds and flowers if they reach the top. In daytime they hide in the media. You can soak the pot in hydrogen peroxide 3% for 2 or 3 minutes and that will kill off most of them. Unless you want to repot it, this would be a better way to deal with it. Get rid of all the old media and add fresh media, wash the roots and spray them with hydrogen peroxide 3% and pot the orchid normally. Hope this helps!
Alexandra Gomille Hi Alexandra, yes I'm pretty sure there are others, or even eggs.. the wilting flowers though might mean a lot of things, from the natural end of their life cycle to a problem with the roots to getting adjusted to the environment. So, it's up to you if you want to repot the orchid and take a look at the roots and asses the orchid's health before taking any action.
HI, well for me it did not do a great job, but I had too many orchids to treat and was not consistent with it. If you manage to spray the orchid on a daily basis for a while it might work better for you :)
How do you know if it was ground rod said I have an orchid did somebody gave me and one of the leaves it's got like a A black spot on it kind a looks like something got on it that should not have in the rider but it is black
+x yz hello :) well lately I am forced to grow them bare root in containers yes (due to moving out reasons and shipping them bare root and spider mites all combined lol) but really I have never enjoyed this growth style. For one it doesn't look pretty to me, second of all it is so much more tedious with watering for me, but most of all I don't think it's the best for the orchid. I don't find the balance of air and moisture optimum, but that is just me and my own opinion. I prefer potted orchids, or orchids in baskets more than anything else, it is comfortable for me to water them and care for them and they thrive in these conditions for me so I don't need to fix something that isn't broken :) (ps if you refer to orchids that are potted in glass with medium, so not bare root, that is even worse for me, as there is a serious lack of airflow in the glass that can lead to root rot if not careful).
I know you believe that plants are just going "objects" that cannot feel. And it's understandable because they cannot show the same reactions that animals do. I'm sorry if I've bugged you about this before. I just have an idea: reguardless of what you think, talk to your plants. Tell them you love them. Or treat them like you would a pet. They will actually grow better! Plants can survive with just their physical needs met. But they seem to thrive of positive emotions. Your so good with them. I just think it's strange that you love them so much if you think they can't feel anything... If you treat them like intelligent beings they will grow better. There is so much that we don't know. And believe it or not plants need intelligence and pain to evolve. If plant is In pain it will wilt or go into shock. How could the bee orchid evolve to look like a bee if it cannot feel anything or sense anything? Orchids are so of the most recently evolved plants. They are not always like this. Because they were physically weaker than other plants they became specialists. Much like humans as opposed to Other animals. If they could not reason in some way or feel pain they would not have be one orchids. I understand your point of view because people told me to feel the same way. But the human race is greedy. There much proof of this theory. But the humans who have power lie because they would lose power if the excepted the truth and had to treat plants like people or animals. If I'm annoying you with my theories tell me and I will not speak of this again. I just think if you tried thinking of them as sentients you'd probably get better results. I don't collect them for their looks. I collect them because I love plants as friends like people do pets. I think you should give my theory a try. If not I apologize. Thank you.
+Zachary Kenniston you obviously don't know my channel very well :) let's just believe whatever we like and talk on our channels about what we believe and gather the people with the same mind set, nothing wrong with difference of opinion ;)
Forgive me if I offended you. I will talk no more of this. I was only trying to help. You've helped me with your videos I was trying to show you other possible things. Thank you for your advice. Sorry if I was rude.
+Zachary Kenniston it has nothing to do with being offended don't worry, but you need to understand that trying to convince someone about something cannot be done with words and nagging, if you truly believe in something so pertinent, go out of your way to prove it, make it so it cannot be counter acted with scientific evidence present at this time. Dedicate your time and make sacrifices, be thorough and present your findings to scientists that can counter act it easy and fast if they can. The day no scientist will be able to counter act your finding is the day you will make a difference, until then we are all playing in a world of theories, some useful some useless, some absolutely dangerous and harmful to us.
I understand... I was not trying to nag you even. Thanks for the insight. I will use my knowledge to show people the "truth" about plants. I was only trying to help you with your plants because it is MY experience that they grow much better when you have s bond with them. You've helped me a lot. Though I believe plants are sentient, you definitely have more experience growing orchids because youve been doing it longer. Thanks for the help with the paphiopedilums, they are doing well. Thanks for listening to me. I'm actually studying horticulture now. I hope one day I can find ACCEPTABLE proof that they are feeling beings. That would be good for all earthly life. Thanks for understanding. Bye.
MissOrchidGirl i can tell you it's true. like 2 years ago, i bought 2 ficus plants for my living room. the i read about talking to plants in the internet and thaught this couldn't be true. but the way i just am, i like to test such crazy things😂😂 i talked to the first plant, very lovely and caring like "you are a beautiful plant and you grow sooo well!". to the other one i didn't talk to wasn't growing that well and started to die after a while. i was quite shocked about the fact that this really worked out
Hi, the limp leaves are a sign that the orchid is dehydrated. Why? well here is the issue :) it might be that it didn't get watered enough, but this is rarely the reason. The main reason is the lack of roots, caused by death of the roots. I suggest you unpot the orchid and look at the roots. Dead roots are dark and mushy, they are rotted. Rotting can occur for multiple reasons, but the main idea is you need to repot it into fresh media and promote root growth. When the orchid will be able to absorb moisture it will plump back up again. one step at a time for now, check the roots and we will talk more when you see how they are :) good luck!
Hi, I'd like to find out what is the spotted green leaf plant in the background at 9.35 … please give me its common name as well as the biological name, if possible. Great tips these! Thanks!
+MissOrchidGirl She's probably asking about water staying in the crown of an orchid after some rain. Plants in nature are not always at a perfect upright angle, so water falls from the leaves and doesn't get caught in there. Also, orchids have adapted throughout centuries to their environments, so it's hard to find orchids that would die from rotting in rainy places. Hope this was what you were asking about, and if not, hope this info helps you!
Hi again, OrchidGirl. I have a quick question about one of my Phalys: It is a new one, and I got it posted to me. Some of the leaves were split when I got it, and more seem to be splitting since I got it. Some of the leaves also have white lines across them (where it looks like they were bent at some stage). I was wondering what I should do about this? Thanks a lot :)
Bjorn Phillips Hi Bjorn, the splitting can be produced indeed by transport and handling but as well as a sudden rehydration if the orchid was dehydrated at some point. You could keep it in the moss for a while if roots look ok, but careful how often you water it, moss dries really slow. In my opinion Phals do better in bark, so at some point, bark might be better and safer :) good luck!
how about a cheap place for pots? Orchid labeled clear pots are pretty ridiculous..$1 or more per pot...I'm thinking clear sturdy deli containers, 24 or 32oz...where do you get yours?
JPowellCreative well different territories have different stores, I live in Europe so I usually buy them either from Schwerter Germany either from a local store. In the USA you can look for online stores or orchid nurseries that sell them, or Amazon and Ebay
the others had started with a black spot on the leaf then became yellow, roots turned black and mushy, and continously rotting,as with the others i think i kill it with overwatering, despite i follow your rules in caring for orchids mine didnt work, for now i dont buy phals anymore but i have vandas, cattleyas, dendrobiums i think they are easy to take care of than phals...i dont know why i dont have luck on phals, sadly it is one of my favorite orchid😞
I think that the source of the trouble wasn't eliminated, don't think it's something in environment really. I think you should try one more time, find the healthiest one, keep it very ventilated and repot it soon, don't let it in the old medium too log. Offer extra ventilation holes and bright shade. No water should be left in the leaves and crown. I bet this time will be better ;)
My morning ritual includes staring at my orchids and other plants! Its so nice im not the only person doing this. It is very relaxing and exciting too, when checking buds and new growth. A WORD OF CAUTION: staying too long out on my balcony makes me late for work LOL
haha I can totally relate to that :P

I do the same as soon as I get home and shower after work. I only have a few orchids but I tend to look at the clock at some point during my revelry and I’m always shocked. I love getting lost in looking at the roots & leaves (especially as they are forming), sniffing the medium, putting a tiny LED spotlight into crevices looking for exciting new growth or anxiety-causing issues... and spending long moments just mystified (in a good way).
Taking good care of your orchids really paid off, they all looks so healthy and beautiful even without blooms.
i've just started collecting orchids i'm really excited , i hope they do well for me!
I bought a few that are a little bit of a gamble because they seemed really dry, or root bound or damaged by the store
but your videos make me feel like i would be able to save them! Thanks Danny!
I love checking on my orchids while drinking my first coffee of the day! I check them again when I get home from work. Just a bit obsessed!
Thank you. I get so annoyed with those people who only look at their plants once a week and think I'm crazy.
Happy valentines day! I agree with what you said about paying attention to your orchids, a few days ago I noticed one of my den phals had a new growth, it's very good news, because I thought it was sick.
Happy Val's day to you too although with delay :P congrats on the new growth!
Love your videos!! I've been very lucky with mine. My first orchid had leaves that were so large I took them all off and kept feeding, ventilating and watching the orchid plant. It regrew and now I have three healthy leaves and it looks like a new plant.
Keep learning from your knowledge. Thanks so much
You have a beautiful collection of orchids. And they are sooo healthy. U are an awesome orchid Mom!
Aw thank you Erika, I hope I am :D
I'm loving your videos! Thanks so much for the practical info! I started with a dud his colored phal and got swept away with orchid obsession from that point on. I always try to look out for crown rot when watering. My orchids enjoy a bit of spritzing with water in the summer months. I have great ventilation in my home and in the orchid pots. You're so right about that. It's so important.
Dominique Miller Hi Dominique, thanks for watching my vids I'm glad you enjoy them :) yes there are so many benefits to a good ventilation, makes the hobby that much more enjoyable :)
Very kind of you to answer my question, it helped
Very helpful information. Watching your videos has saved my orchids! You are extremely knowledgeable and I'm very excited for future videos 😃🌺🌸🌱
Hi, glad to hear my videos help :D
Great advice. We have extremely humid conditions but cool temperatures in western Scotland, so watering advice was very useful.
Thank you for this video! I was caring for my orchids wrong this whole time.
Thank you so much for these suggestions. I'll be adding to my first aid kit right away
Thanks for watching :D
Thanks for the tips!! Keep up the good work Danni :D
Thanks Will! :D
Bea fay
thank you for this advice I am new to Orchid growing, I found this very helpful. Will lood for your other videos
Very useful information, lots of details and new things to learn about orchids.
Foarte multa informatie folositoare, multumesc frumos.
:D Cu placere, glad this helped!
I am wondering where you buy your clear orchid pots.
Thank you!
+carolina rivero thank you for watching I'm glad you like my videos :D
I knew nothing! Thank you. I have been very lucky though up to now, but I am changing my care routine as of today!
This is greatly helpful information! Thank you so much!💖🐾
My pleasure :D
Hei, astăzi am cumpărat prima mea orhidee. Surpriză foarte plăcută a fost să văd cuvântul "Scorțișoară". Mulțumesc mult pentru video-uri. !
I have always had two flower spikes on my phil. orchid. In the past two years, only one spike appears. What can I do to promote that second flower spike? I do fertilize and water properly.
Is air purifier good for orchids? I put my orchids in my room and planning to get a humidifier too. Please advice.
Great. Thank you so much.
Hi, Thanks for sharing tips about how to grow Orchids. I have a question, how did you make all these little holes on
the plastic pot? Thanks again for sharing.
Hi Cindy, here is how Orchid Tip #10 - How to create extra ventilation holes in your Orchid pots
MissOrchidGirl Hi, I have watched the Orchid tip #10, thank you for sharing this fantastic idea.
I enjoy watching your video!
Wonderful video. Hi Danny , my question today is, what is the minimum amount of light that the phal. needs to grow and flower. Thanks.
I look forward to your advice... ;)
P.S Is there a way to reproduce and breed the Phalaenopsis at home?
Just watch the roots and leaves and you will see if things go ok for a while or go south :)
great video... really helpful. keep uploading..
Charaka Wickramaratne thank you, I upload videos every day :)
keep it up... it's really helpful..!
Thanks! Great info you are appreciated 😊 10:17
Good tips. Thanks.
Thanks very much!
I started using hydro perox, thx to you :)
To the first aid Kit I'd also add Propolis (I dk how to properly say it in eng) which is a strong natural anti biotic and also Tea tree essential oil (this thing is like magic. it kills all kinds of fungi ant also has anti bacterial and antiviral properties) PLUS it has an amazin smell!!!
I use all this stuff as prevention AND treatment with nice results.
Hi Gabriel, that is very interesting! how do you use propolis? what did you manage to treat with it?
I think it's bacterial :(
I'm trying to treat it with Propolis.
And it smells kind of nice as well :)
Happy growing
Gabriel Lisboa Thanks for the tip Gabriel I will try it! :D
Could you please clarify the use of hydrogen peroxide? Should it be diluted? I believe you suggested using it to disinfect roots when re-potting. How should it be applied? Should the roots be submerged and for how long? Thank you; your videos are very helpful!
I have drendobiums they are in bloom now, how often should I wanter it,
u are the goddness of orchid
aw thanks but naaah :P just doing my best
MissOrchidGirl i just started planting moth orchids becaus emy aunt is murdering herso my aunt let me taking care of it,it is abit complicated because i dont have a greenhouse and those hydrogen peroxide,it is hard to have one in hong kong
CryogonAlan phalaenopsis are easy to care for without a green house :) they like window sill conditions as long as they are not burned by direct sun. here is a video about them and how to take care of them, maybe it will help you more th-cam.com/video/Mce-ne6NyL0/w-d-xo.html
MissOrchidGirl thanks,! also subsrcibed u!
I started to use electric fan for my orchids.. hoping it will help them a lot.. hoping there will be a bloom this time...
Thank you MissOrchidGirl . Old hippy guy in New Mexico .
+Master Tracker you're welcome :D
Hi Danny... just wanted to ask if you hand-tag your orchids if they don't come with tags? do you put anything other than names on them? because none but 2 of my orchids are specifically named, Cymbidium dayanum and Angraecum sesquipedale.
OK, thanks you a lot :)
very useful information. thank you.
You are welcome :D
I heard about lemon is good to clean the leaf of orchid, I would like to know if it have to be natural or from bottle, lemon or lime, what other alternative? Thanks
Hi, my I got rid of my orchid plastic pot that cane with the plant in the video u called it the ventilation pot will it kill my plant?
What is the name of that pink phalaenopsis in the upper left side of the fan at 1:30?
+MissOrchidGirl ,
Thank you so much for your response, very well appreciated!
Hi MissOrchidGirl, my question is probably silly, but I'll ask anyway. I happen to not have hydrogen peroxide at home, but I do have tea tree oil. I was wondering whether it is possible to use that instead of h2o2 in some dilution?
miss orchids girl, may i ask if is it possible to top cut a strap leaf vanda? please let me know.thank you!
There is much info that they are not harmful for orchids but I just can’t stand viewing them.
thanks i will try again and do what you say..😀😁
Sorry I didn't finish my question. I don't have a lot of light were my orquids are, so I move them near a window that get a good light and then I move them back to the their place, but I need to know how long they need to be getting light in order to grow and flower. Thanks.
I would say about 10 hours minimum per day, but it also depends on the species, maybe Phals could do with less but Vandas and Cattleyas would love as much light for as much time as you can give them.. except night time lol :P
hi u have any ideas on building a small green house .
Great video! Do you dilute the hydrogen peroxide prior to spraying? What strength is safe? I'm always so timid with this chemical.
Good morning Miss orchid girl. Thank u for your fast reply. I'll try yo upload the pics, even though i have never done it before.
Hi Dannie 😍 Can I use osmocote and the 20 20 20 fertilizers at the same time for my orchids? Dona
+CARMELIAN PRIDE Hi, I never used that fertilizer and I am not a fan of organic fertilizers, but I guess you can try it out sure :)
So how do they survive in nature when it rains and everything gets wet, especially the inner stems? What makes them survive?
How do u unpot an orchid w roots stick to the earthen pot?
Bune sfaturi, frumoase orhidee! Sper ca esti romanca, am vazut "Apa oxigenata" :D Also, VERY good english accent!
+Oana Silvia da sunt :D multumesc!
orhideile tale sunt foarte frumoase ! nu prea am inteles unde se utilizeaza scortisoara
+Gina Dorobantu ai vazut video asta? th-cam.com/video/bRXmMblflU0/w-d-xo.html
acum l-am vazut . multumesc !
I knowhow to use fertilizer ,I want to know how to use this two different strength fertilizer and how often.thank you for your help.
ow, well the 30-10-10 is useful in the growing phase of the orchid when it's not blooming, the high nitrogen content will help with leaf production and growth.
Hi Denni, I have a question for you I follow you from US, but originally I am from Romania do you have your videos in Romanian language I like to recommend to my sister and my friends who lives in Romania
hi Danny, please tell me how to mist orchids and what kind of orchid is it
+weng espinoza hello, I don;t usually mist orchids, but I will make a tutorial soon about misting, after I relocate and settle down. What orchid would you like me to identify?
+MissOrchidGirl, please do a misting tutorial about dendrobiums, miltoniopsis, and oncidiums please
Hi, at first a wanna say, that i love ur videos! (and sorry for my bad english..)^^
I've seen, u've got a lot of potts from germany but here in germany i can't find this kind of potts like ur's :/ where do u buy them?
Hi, welcome to my channel :D the pots were purchased at a German store called Hornbach, if you have it in your town go take a look, you should find them :) also Schwerter has them too, check them out here www.shop.schwerter-orchideenzucht.de/index.php?cPath=31_44
I am having such a difficult time finding some clear plastic pots for my orchids..would anyone have any suggestions of where to get some? Also, the roots exposed to the air always look dry, is this normal?
Hi, I have (20-20-20) and also (30-10-10) fertilizer could you please let me know how and how often I use them.thank you.
MissOrchidGirl can you please recommend a good fertilizer and do I only fertilize when I water.
If an orchid has a trail of white spots on the roots what does that normally mean? Would the orchid be at risk of dying?

Where do you find tge clear pots?
Laurie Parkhurst I bought mine from Amazon
i have a question!!! i bought an orchid from the grocery store today and as i was watching your videos and inspecting my own trying to get to know it and become familiar with what to do.. i found a slug looking thing on the outside of the pot!!! what is it doing there?!! and should i get rid of it? i hate bugs :(
Hi Alexandra, yes you should definitely try to get rid of slugs and snails, they can chew on the roots and leaves and even buds and flowers if they reach the top. Hope this helps!
thank you so much ! yeah i just put the slug i saw outside but my flowers are wilting is it possible theres more hiding?
Alexandra Gomille Hi Alexandra, yes I'm pretty sure there are others, or even eggs.. the wilting flowers though might mean a lot of things, from the natural end of their life cycle to a problem with the roots to getting adjusted to the environment. So, it's up to you if you want to repot the orchid and take a look at the roots and asses the orchid's health before taking any action.
okay, thank you for all the advice!
I think a few of my paph. orchids have spider mites will rubbing alcohol mixed with water and dish soap take care of them?
HI, well for me it did not do a great job, but I had too many orchids to treat and was not consistent with it. If you manage to spray the orchid on a daily basis for a while it might work better for you :)
How do you know if it was ground rod said I have an orchid did somebody gave me and one of the leaves it's got like a A black spot on it kind a looks like something got on it that should not have in the rider but it is black

Hi, have you ever grown orchids in glass. What are you thoughts on growing orchids in glass.
Bye.
MissOrchidGirl i can tell you it's true. like 2 years ago, i bought 2 ficus plants for my living room. the i read about talking to plants in the internet and thaught this couldn't be true. but the way i just am, i like to test such crazy things😂😂
i talked to the first plant, very lovely and caring like "you are a beautiful plant and you grow sooo well!". to the other one i didn't talk to wasn't growing that well and started to die after a while. i was quite shocked about the fact that this really worked out
What strength Hydrogen Peroxide Danny? or do you use it neat from the 3% bottle?
I use the 3% one straight from the bottle, it's just easier :)
Buna, esti din Romania? :) ascultam si apoi am observat produsele din kit-ul de ingrijire. :)

Normally misting leads to accumulate water in crown and leaf base. How to avoid it?
My leaves are limp, no mention of how to remedy limp leaves or is it too late?
MissOrchidGirl do u dilute the hydrogen peroxide or as it is in the bottle?
+Latchman Singh If it's 3% no it doesn't need diluting :)
great video
Hi, I'd like to find out what is the spotted green leaf plant in the background at 9.35 … please give me its common name as well as the biological name, if possible. Great tips these! Thanks!
+Nikhil Khandekar Hi, that is a Paphiopedilum maudiae Green and the popular name is lady slipper orchid :)
how often an orchid flower ??
It only depends on the species of orchids and its habit :)
what happens in nature after the rain ?
+shanelle wabatu not sure what you mean :)
Thanks :)
Hi again, OrchidGirl. I have a quick question about one of my Phalys:
It is a new one, and I got it posted to me. Some of the leaves were split when I got it, and more seem to be splitting since I got it. Some of the leaves also have white lines across them (where it looks like they were bent at some stage). I was wondering what I should do about this? Thanks a lot :)
It also came in a moss medium, should I repot into bark now? Or wait until it finishes blooming (there are a couple of buds yet to open.
MissOrchidGirl thanks a lot :)
how about a cheap place for pots?
