I have a lot of respect for these guys. They really work their tails off, and dangerous too. Does anyone know how much they get paid? I wouldn't be surprised if it's not all that much, considering what they have to go through. The weather looked pretty cooperative on this trip, but I imagine that's not always the case either.
It goes on the amount they catch, once they have caught enough to pay fuel, food, bait, tackle they start earning there wage, well that's how most fishing operations go. It can go either way, catch lots of catch bugger all.
Tough way to make a living. Lots of ways to get hurt. Hard on the back. The video is 30 yrs old. One wonders what shape those fisherman are in now, if they're even alive. Nobody works as hard as fishermen.
I did it under New Bedford started earlier than that and I'm still alive, I'm 62 and working in the oilfield, without a pain in my body and work with 30 year old men all day long
Archival stuff, shame some of the kids here only see boredom and not what has changed in thirty years. Get a better grip on the past to see the way forward. The gen Ys know so little about work, ethics and values.
I loved every dam bit of it. I guess it's only the hard working fisherman that would enjoy it. Such a great bit of history from the good ol Grand Banks. Thanks very much for the video, do you have anymore about fishing on the Grand Banks?
Some great antiques and artifacts in that wheelhouse..
So this is where TH-cam taks me when I fall asleep with autoplay on
Johny Kidd thats really funny. i just woke up with auto play on aswell and this was playing.

My Dad is too! He’s the guy who’s cooking the “scrambled chicken” 😂
Awesome video

Wow i never relized they set em so close together the hooks seem like there 5 or 10 fathoms apart
Cod fishing they were 1 fathom, halibut they were 3 fathoms
@@zcr19makes sense.
The Atlantic halibut was in trouble even back in the 80s
14:41 he threw back a monkfish?
I'm willing to bet that was a big sculpin, can't say for sure but
@@zcr19 that it could be, thanks for quick reply and awesome vid btw so cool to see old fishing footage, thanks for sharing
@@PeterRanieriII Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
The music on the radio playing sounds a little newer than the 80’s.
the automatic gear was taken off her in 87 88
The end they show The Loran--C so this is the 80s for sure because we started using GPS by 1990 dot-dot-dot for navigation case anyone doesn't know
11:57-Haywire's Bad, Bad Boy was released around the same time this was filmed

Nice man, we longline off home with a 40 footer in the summer, I hope you get to go its an awesome experience.
zcr19 as implied, fishing is off the grand banks of Newfoundland, from a boat .

Nobody works as hard as fishermen.
I know 75 year old men who can work circles around todays youth.

Dad was the guy cooking in the video, he’s 74 years old now; tough like an Ox
That’s actually 1987
Yes because I was born not long after Dad got home from this trip!
When men were men

Ok boomer
Wiping out there livelihood. So sad. Their kids could still be making money and owning boats if they fished sustainably.
It wasn't the hook and line boats that destroyed the Grand banks.
WASTED TIME, DON'T BOTHER WATCHING.!
I took my time, watched and dont feel the time was wasted. Why do you say that?
