Its honestly really charming each time uThermal gets surprised by something he did, "Have I upgraded that? Oh nice!" "I didnt meant to move that but its alive now somehow." "Am I making medivacs? Thats good." "Wait did I mine the thing?" it feels like hes so used to playing this game its all muscle memory and he has no idea whats going on in his own base.
He's like on autopilot driving home and then getting home like oh... how did I get home lol
I would be so depressed to be 4min into a game and see a thor on a medivac heading my way

It was awesome experience, thanks for that:) I had panic mode even before the game cause I didn't know how to switch chats to respond to Mr. Streamer, and it only get worse when I saw proxy barrack with reaper so mussle memory took over and I expanded :) at least it confusing enough to buy me some time!:) thx for bringing me to the game, I decided to start playing SC2 after watching a lot of your crazy challenges:)
These challenges with the community are awesome, keep the coming!
I think know the best strategy for a diamond player
1. Build workers.
2. Standard supply depot, 1 rax.
3. Two marines one per bunker
4. Send 3-4 scvs out on the map and hide them (right before the earliest reaper timing)
5. Build one gas, gather gas
6. Build enginering bay somwhere hidden on the map
7. Make pf
8. Build a hidden base ( and turn it to pf?)
9. Saturate hidden base
10. Send several workers from hidden base out on the map
11. When the main CC is destroyed by uThermal's tanks - start building CC, but don't complete it. Build it away from mineral patches. Complete to 99%
12. When uThermal finds your second (completed) base - play hide and seek. You will have 2K-3K minerals by now: build a new hidden cc to 99% away from minerals, cancel attacked base. This way you can build 20-30 partially completed bases all around the map. If you only have two partially constructed bases, you lose 100 minerals of cancellation fee. And you are not revialed.
13. Once you have 300-399 minerals - start building supply depots to 99%. Do the same as 12, but with supplies depots instead of CC. Yes, you are now revealed, but you only lose 25 minerals on cancellation fee.
Part of what makes SC2 so good is the skill ceiling is just gigantic. It is really just insane to watch this you dominate to such an extreme degree it's incredible. Reapers just look unstoppable, I legitimately can't think of a way I could try to use to beat the best times, but dammit holding you off for 10 minutes let alone a victory. Wow.
Marc, you are someone I really look forward to watching. I have had a heavy year mentally and your videos always keep me above the depression.

This is a really great idea. This is how you build a community.
Pig had a theory, that the higher the rank is, the more normal people play, some even try to attack you in the higher leagues. The silver players? They go for the planetaries and bunker walls!
Yo!!! I play Nomad on the ladder pretty regularly. A lot of my builds are Thermy inspired, and Nomad plays well against me. Makes so much sense now, knowing they're a viewer who understands silly goose builds.
I would rush medivac and a couple SCVs, toss it into the opposite corner of the map. Wait until your final push where you are 20 seconds from killing the main base, then drop a single SCV and build a command center. Fly the medivac along the edge back to the initial spawn and wait until you find the constructing command center. Then build another with the other SCV. I am positive that would buy at least 4 extra minutes to realize what was happening, find the first one, then find the 2nd one.
You have to stay alive till your medivac are done tho, I think the best is to go with protoss , because if you check game 3 the guy didnt even had the time to build his starport. With protoss you can canon defense to gain time to build prism and then run around the map

I thought about it for sure but I play so so so rarely that I just wasn't thinking clearly. Don't even know the maps.
Cannons + tempest on one base should eventually take the top time, the cannons defend against the early units (tbh this vid the reapers won many of the games alone), and the tempest defends against the tanks/broodlord/tempest/carrier that will be required to kill the cannons. Plus cannons don't need micro, thats the other area that lost these guys the games. I suspect the hardest to defend against would be Marc doing a proxy tempest himself, mainly because you will have to micro your own tempest in defence and have enough batteries. Another strat that might work is playing zerg and trying to mass expand and just get 2 spines and 2 spores at each base, that will be enough to defend the mineral line and hatch against smaller groups of units, and require the bringing in of ranged units or large units like thor/BC/carrier/tempest to take out. Also requires no micro, so while Marc is busy microing to take out a base, you can be expanding somewhere else for very little APM.
@@joshuadalton6063 I was thinking maybe rush tanks and vikings. Once you have those it's super hard to attack into you as Terran. Lings could just run by or force you to kill the wall, but Terran doesn't have anything that get's close to the tanks without getting hit by vikings, and the best Terran counter to vikings is marines that can't get close to them without getting obliterated by tanks. If you're just defending, it's probably the best composition. Zerg has the issue with no wall and being super vulnerable to reaper harrass. Protoss can rush a couple of adepts or stalkers to kill the reapers, but surviving the tank/cyclone pressure would be difficult. I guess the best thing they could do is stalkers for anti-air, then use sentries to block the ramp in the early, followed by probably phoenix/carrier. If you're defending, 1-2 tempests does practically nothing. They can 1shot a marine, but everything else takes 2 attacks from the slowest attacking units in the game that doesn't deal aoe. On the other hand carriers have one of the highest dps and attack speeds in the game. While they are weak to cyclones in low numbers, phoenixes break lock on with graviton beam. But still, I don't think it would be more effective than the tank/viking.
@@squashiejoshie200000 Thats true, but 1 raven anti-armour and even a smaller force of attacking vikings will win the air battle. At that point he just comes in with the marine/medivac and drops on the tanks, then its GG. Also you would have to micro the vikings in defence, and even if you sat on 1 base that is still a lot of area to cover, probably 3 avenues for drops, and at that point its over. add a few libs as well that you shift click before the engagement to setup on the defending tanks, and suddenly you have a massive problem. You basically did pick the terran equivalent of cannon/tempest though, so our strategies are basically the same just different race.
@@joshuadalton6063 Thing is then he is forced to react to a build. If he's doing that, he's wasting a minute before the fight by building a raven or building a couple of medivacs. Remember this isn't about winning the fight. It's about forcing him to spend as much time as possible to kill us. If a relatively simple build can force him to delay because he has to make a counter, that makes it all the more likely for us to beat our real opponents: the other players trying to survive.
This was really fun to watch. I feel like the number of challenges alone is an impressive feat. I'd love to try out this holdout challenge. It could be the new "funday Monday" theme that day9 used to do. There could be lots of episodes, and I'd try it even without a prize pool.
I haven't played SC2 in years, I don't even have the 3rd expansion so I haven't even used all the units. But I've been watching you play for a while now and this challenge makes me tempted to buy the game, try and find a build and see how long I can hold out for you using certain tactics. Of course now this video has come out the next group will have time to think about things to do and try to practice a build that will work best to make you last longer.
What are the chances I would be able to partake in this challenge? I would be an absolutely TRUE noob. I've never played SC2 multiplayer, only a little bit of SC Brood War back in the day and Warcarft 1, 2 and 3 but that's all my RTS multiplayer experience. Probably wouldn't make for any entertainment because I'd just get owned so fast.

Very cool idea. Hoping to see some inspired strats based on these games. Honestly it might be a lot of fun to run it back with these players sometime since they went in a bit blind.

This seems like a really fun challenge and a good way to practice against early aggression. Would love to join in on some of this nonsense though I'm sure there will be swarms of applications.
What happens if, hypothetically:
a) someone manages to beat you
b) someone manages to beat you in less time than the longest time of someone staying alive

I would love to see a crossover episode with Harstem where one of you plays the role of the attacker and the other one coaches the defender. You could each pull your viewers in to play the defenders.

In that game vs the random player, you could have switched the 3-rax reaper to 3-rax marauder when you scouted that it was toss. Tech labs build fast, to the point that there's only like a 10 second delay between rax->reaper and rax->techlab->marauder. Plus the added dps of marauders against buildings might speed up elimination time.
its easy to hold against a rush especialy if you are a protos just mass cannons to make sure that the reapers dont come in and after your transition is in blink stalkers and mass chargelots

I have so many rule questions. Can they attack you/ counter cheese? What about flying buildings on the map/ towards ur base? Random pylons/ supply depots?

Hey uThermal, I've got a crazy idea variation of this for you: a 1v5 inverse holdout challenge, where you try to survive as long as possible against teams that try to plan a strategy to kill you as fast as possible.
(You can pick the number of opponents to make it good.)
(The team that beats you the fastest wins. If you survive longer than X minutes, you win and move on to the next team, to prevent it taking too long.)
"I managed to last 5 minutes" now has a different meaning...
The last guy canceled the Extractor intending to make a new one, but he lost -19 minerals by the cancellation and did not have enough for a new one.
Super sad... superb idea, though.

You should do this challenge against grandmasters / pros also.
Like one or two base survival challenge.
See who can build the strongest fortress focusing 100% on defense and no offense.

This was such a cool challenge.
I think the best strat is to canon defense your own base and try to build the biggest bank you can before losing it with protoss and you make 5-6 prism with 1 worker each that you send to every corner or the map and you keep building pilons and moving them so you have no choice but to hunt down those workers and since there is 5-6 of them you can drag the game for a couple more minutes if done correctly.
I played Maynarde randomly on ladder and it was the highlight of my entire life.

Pith the protoss guy went for the zealots. They are like the worst against reapers. Had he gone for the adepts and a battery, that could have easily been top hold.

As a shitty player.... Your reaper harass is good enough to kill me. That is a huge differentiator between levels. I wonder how fast you can get a drop ship out. A hidden base in your 3rd expansion would be hilarious
1-1-1. Build buildings around mineral line to block reapers. Bunker in mineral line. Just go Tank + Viking + Libs?

Your Reapers alone can crush them, so that you only need a few Vikings or Cyclones later on to hunt down theyr Buildings.

I would have tried to reaper rush you if I got terran as random. Cheese meets cheese
NGL as a diamond myself. I would also want to try to fight back and not go for the hide things on the map strat. I have my pride lol even if it means losing to the plat.

i like pigs rules of terran can alift buildings but flying ones don't count towards being alive.
Needs an ajudicstor though or some kind of mod.
