About to do this on my 2001 Durango. Thanks! Also, change the pcv valve, that lifter tick will quieten down, worked in my 2003 Dakota (both of mine are 4.7)
Great video young man!! Appreciate your step by step been Workin on vehicles 50 years but never did any front end work have 02 Dakota replacin all Ball joints and New rack. Thanks for sharing be safe have fun
High pressure hose at top hole on rack pinion red cap if new , low pressure hose at bottom hole yellow cap if new . High pressure with the sensor hooks to the pump. The low pressure hose to reservoir. For those who want to cut to the chase.
Thanks for sharing beautiful details with the sockets measurements I'm gonna do mine soon I know under this cold weather 😂😂😂 I wait too long to do it 😂😂😂
I'm about to have to do this on a 99 Dakota I just got. I need to replace the intermediate steering shaft to. I am also putting carb swapped 5.2 in it so I will have plenty of room to work will the 3.9 is out
That one was not too bad but typically this is my least favorite job to do. I would almost rather pull an engine in a FWD car than replace the rack in one. Thanks for sharing.
I will tell you one thing when it comes to using which fluid. I changed my power steering pump and high pressure line last year. The truck manual says to use AT4 trans fluid. Don’t use that, use power steering fluid. The reason is, trans fluid is a bit to abrasive, over time it will cause damage to your pump and rack. Use power steering fluid. 2 mechanics told me the same thing. My neighbor, who’s a tech at the dodge dealer was one of them.
I was a tech at Dodge as well, years ago. I use what Dodge recommends. ATF+4. This truck has 252k miles. First rack and pinion, never had a power steering pump swapped. But you use what makes you comfortable, I'm just some guy with a TH-cam channel.
Curious, i need this same job done on my dakota. Im not a mechanic but how many hours would you say this job would take by an ASE certified mechanic working in a shop?
If your tie rods aren’t bad when doing this install should you replace them anyways? My high pressure line leaks from the rack could push it in and out while the nut is basically seized? If I just replace the line would it fix the whining issue? I had replaced the pump and it still whines every once in a while. Yes I flushed the system. It’s still full of fluid when it whines. Is there a way to bleed the lines without unhooking the pump?
If all the parts are old but don’t look bad I still replace them. Saves time and money later on. Whining is air in the system or a bad pump in my experience. Are you using ATF+4 in your power steering pump?
@@TheGasTap I’m not sure I’m using prestone atf from Autozone. And the pump is brand new. I replaced that and the high pressure line I’ll probably end up replacing the rack anyways
Okay so when jacking up the front, it looks like you're lifting it on that broad piece of metal behind the rack and pinion? That would be a game changer for me, instead of lifting one side at a time for stuff.
@@TheGasTap Cool mate yare nice when u were under the Truck im thinking wheres the collectors? hey why dont they Run the dodges Plymouth etc in the main NASCAR SERIES to much trouble to Destroke the Hemi? i swear of seen them might of been Trans Am, i am hanging out for the next installment of MR JONES. Answer me when u can man.
Wow, this fast swap. Awesome job. I know I could this too, cool trick with bungle cords. I just picked up an 02 dakota 4dr v6 4wd. Was told by place conrads I may need replace mine. Was quoted, by Conrads $1,600 brakes in front only, not with rack/pinion but just both front brakes capliers, pads, rotors, brake lines (front right line is bad only) they recommend both sides, kit comes with all. On top, they said it cost $2,100 just the exhaust from manifold flange back. I know parts are way less, I know I could do it myself cheaper. Have you replaced your exhaust system in your dakota yourself. My 3.9v6 has oem exhaust even cat too which conrads quoted within the 2,100 price new cat is $467 which is nuts, new costs half that. If you have videos of exhaust system also brakes, transfer case, rear differential drive shaft would greatly appreciated. My truck is for winter occasional daily too, do have car. Was given these quotes this week.
The little tube the runs Between the two boots what is it called blue and then come with one and I’ve been looking all over the Internet for that specific to and I can’t find one anywhere I wanna call advance for AutoZone or O’Reillys do you not like I’m telling him something that’s not even on the truck it’s crazy but this is someone help I really appreciate
@The Gas Tap Thank you for the fast reply no not the intake , I don’t think if you’re looking at the rack and pinion there’s three silver tubes on it you got the two tubes that screw in And then the one I need is the one that runs from Bellow to bellow.? I It’s like it just plugs in to each Bellow
@@TheGasTap Sadly to say I just bought this one from rock auto it came with the wrong Bellows on it and no vent tubeIs there anything that I could use until I can make it to the junkyard because without it the fluids just gonna go everywhereI live about 40 miles from civilization it’s a little walk lol

I just did this on my 98' Dakota 339k miles and still going! Thanks for your video, it helped a lot!
I can't thank you enough Buddy, this video got me through my first rack and pinion replacement. Great content 👍

Nice Job! i have a 2000 dakota with almost 300,000 on it mechanic said it needs a rack and pinion might tackle the job myself thanks for posting

The black rims suuuuuuuuuuure are spiffy looking! Been wanting to do the same for my Durango 03!
Good to know the Dakota is hanging tough. I guess steering seal replacement in the rack is not practical?
It has so many miles it probably needed the whole thing. 🤷🏻♂️
You Know you are aggravating me, I need rain bad and you show rain two days straight. Just kidding love the videos keep them coming.
Lol

Jack stands looked a little scary, I would like to see the wheels under the truck incase it fell. Stay safe!
Also you can count your turns on the tie rods to put the new ones in the same location
Good to see you back! Can’t wait to hear that valiant run.
Thanks bro! Gona replace my rack and your video summed up what I needed to know!
Excellent! Good luck!!!
Thank you man! This help me a lot on my dodge durango 2000

Great video but can you include the torque specs as well in future projects?
I have a question. If the rack & pinion is bad would it make the steering turn worse than manual steering ?
Great video, thanks, Steve
That sounds like a pump issue unless the rack has bad gears. But you would probably feel the gears grinding. Probably a pump issue.
great video, really appreciate your time
Thank you
I'm back again for a refresher course because I have a lot of slop in my steering. Thanks again. How long in total did it take?
Maybe 3 hours.
@@TheGasTap Wow, thanks for answering. If it took you 3, it'll take me 6. Cheers from South Carolina!

Check your owner’s manual. I worked at dodge for a few years as a tech and we always used ATF.

I was wondering if you can make a video on how to replace your front wheel hub assembly with an anti lock sensor or wire attached to it.
Probably not soon since I replaced them about 4 years ago. When they get worn again I will definitely make a video. Thank You!
Dude you look well prepared and make it look easy. Good show!
Great video, Thank's!
transmision fluid in a new rack and pinion ? why not power sterring fluid?
It’s a dodge. They all use trans fluid. Refer to your owners manual.
Okay so when jacking up the front, it looks like you're lifting it on that broad piece of metal behind the rack and pinion? That would be a game changer for me, instead of lifting one side at a time for stuff.

That’s just a vent tube that transfers air from side to side when turning. I doubt anyone would sell that. You probably have to buy a rack.
