They had a bottle of champagne in the strawberry fields video that fell off the table. After the shoot a lad picked it up and got the Beatles to sign it. Just found your video. What a coincidence! Went to Knole Park today and took a picture of myself in front of the arch. By the way, it wasn't raining today, just cloudy on and off. Didn't look for the tree as so many people say it isn't there any longer. As it was dead it was probably blown over during the big storm of 1987. Good video.
Glad you liked it. When I went and it rained I said to myself “just do it anyway”. I think you’re right about the tree. Shame but at least the arch is still there 👍
This is such a great video. I love the laid back chatty style! Thank you. Going to check it out this week on a trip down from Manchester. I have read there is nothing at all left of the tree though which I think is unlikely see the size of it.
Thank you Chris. The place is definitely worth a visit. I think you're right about the tree. A little internet digging and for the most part, everyone says the tree no longer exists. It's fun speculating and trying to find it though :-) I hope you get there.
You just have to don't you? That was such a good film and Leo McKern stole it! His comment "They all look the same in their similitude and language" always makes me chuckle :-)
@@TudorSmith i have my two adult 17 and 20 year old daughters saying quotes like "that's my car love!" and "He looks wrong.... he's so ugly.... REAL UGLY!" From Yellow Submarine... it's hilarious to me being a Beatle fan!

Lovely trip out, I really enjoyed it. Though I'm originally from Kent and went on school tour here in 1979 we didn't know about the Beatle connection then and played around those magical trees doing hide and seek. Years later I read about the Beatles videos and always wondered where it all took place, so many appreciative thanks for your exploration work, it was good to revisit Knole Park again.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for sharing your memories. I think all input like yours really helps the Beatles community to relive the experiences. There are probably so many memories people could offer up that a) no one has heard before and b) if we were to ask people of the time, they probably wouldn't remember :-) Anyway I'm feeling spurred on to do a follow-up video and really locate the tree's posiiton in the park once and for all!
I appreciate you making this video as I have been looking for the trees in the video for a while. The split tree is not the McCartney tree - if you pause the Strawberry Fields video at 1.13 you can see McCartney is really a significant distance off the ground. Probably twice the height of the tree in your video.
Both these videos were done by Peter Goldman (1935-2005). Born in Germany and later moved to Sweden. He became a producer with Swedish Television (while I was at the same place).
I think you've got it right Tudor...... First of all, "who" exactly says that the tree was felled years ago? Everybody says "apparently it was cut down" but where does this come from?? There are also several still pictures of the film crew and the Beatles around the tree in 1967 and the tree has much more growth and height to it than you ever get the impression of from the actual film. Old trees can be nearly utterly destroyed but given time they will re-grow.....I live next to a park where an old oak tree was set on fire by kids years ago (1980's) and it looked dead for ages but it now has now fully recovered and has a full canopy. I totally agree that "the road" in the background with the mini car passing through during the filming is crucial to locating the right spot. The other thing I personally think confirms this is the little copse of trees in the background just off to the top left hand corner of the piano....if you look closely at the original photo-still in your video, then there were about 8 little dark vertical lines evenly spaced apart and compared to your current shots from your chosen vantage point there are approx 8 (now mature) trees, evenly spaced apart in the same location. Can only assume that the tiny dark lines were newly planted saplings in 1967! Hope you agree Tudor.....
I am with you on this one. I've seen trees that look dead and yet have new growth on them over time. On the day I Was filming, I must admit I got a little excited as I had heard/read that the tree in question had been felled. But when you're standing in the location, with a road in the background, and surrounding countryside that looks to be in exactly the right place, it's quite easy to get excited. I'm currently "self isolating" but when it's ended, I'm heading back to do some further investigation :-)
If you get a hold copy of 'The Beatles London' by Piet Schreuders, Mark Lewisohn & Adem Smith. It shows a map the of the site of Oak tree. Maybe worth a look. Good book too.
Ahh great video and well done for perseverance in trying to find the tree ! I watched someone else’s video a while back and they seemed to think they found the stump of the tree - I think the closest could be number 1 tree - other than that it properly got felled years ago .. which is a shame ! Why can’t things stay the same damn it ! Thank - you 🙏
Strawberry Fields Forever has a really dream-like quality. Almost like a mixture of Dali and Lewis Carol. They were at their zenith in '66-'67. Enjoyed your vid.
Great video ! On seeing the image on utube the first thought, " must watch this" ! This period was very mysterious because they had quit touring & wisely decided to dedicate themselves to writing & recording so this is a "Magical Mystery" timelessness, possibly a personal favourite. Penny Lane & Strawberry Fields are really "otherworldly" leading up to Sgt. Pepper & this landscape tour which you beautifully evoke brings us to that magical door in time. Thank you very much, subscribed ! Possibly you could interview Sir Paul asking him how they came to film there !
Thank you for an excellent comment. Love it! Can you imagine what we'd have lost if they continued touring? Interviewing Sir McCartney...now that would be a lifes ambition, although I'd want to get my guitar out, write a song with him and have him put it out on one of his records (if he produces any more!)
It certainly looks like the right tree to me although it looks like they may have made the ground level up a bit when they laid out the golf course. Great stuff
You'd think the Strawberry Fields Foreever video done by the Swedish director would have been lauded as a classic. It's a mini-surrealistic movie. And it's really is the preface to their huge year of 1967, ending in the "Magical Mystery Tour" television film. I remember seeing this video in the U.S. It gave me a different but similar feeling to seeing the lads U.S. debut on Ed Sullivan. My very young self knew that the world had changed.
You’re absolutely right. I remember seeing it the first time when I was 16 and living in Sweden. It came on as apart of a music program I was watching and I was transfixed!
So im sure many of you already knows this...but the scenes where the boys initially meet up, were filmed in stratford mainly around the theatre royal. The alley they ride through on horseback was over street which if you're interested is approx located on the north east exit of the shopping mall next to theatre royal. Before that mall was constructed in 1970...it was terrace houses which lead onto angel lane. The scenes of lennon walking alone were filmed in kensington. The only thing that always perplexed me ...was why stratford east london? For what was only a few shots? Considering they were st johns wood based...why come all the way across for just several shots. Anyway hope you enjoy that contribution 👍
It’s a funny thing. I myself never actually thought about it until I discovered it was on my doorstep. I assumed the Penny Lane street scenes with John were - well - Penny Lane until I discovered it was in Chelsea!
Makes sense since they recorded everything at Abbey Road. A comment about Lennons song writing. There were two sides to his writing,. Early years it was about the universal subject, love. He wrote two books, a spaniard in the works, then in my own write. He realised he could combine the two in his songs 🎵. He began to put his quwerky thoughts to his music.
Enjoyed your video. I found a stump which I think could be the tree. If you walk along the track with the arch on your left for 100 yards or so, there is some open ground on the left with a stump in the middle of it (there were no other trees nearby in the film) and the road in the background is in just the right position. The background landscape seems to match as well. I have just written a short walking guide that takes in all the Beatles Knole locations, plus the location of the antique shop in Sevenoaks where John bought the circus poster that inspired "Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite". Also I discovered recently that the grave of Alan Civil (credited for playing the french horn solo on "For No One") is in nearby St Martins church in Brasted village. Happy to share my guide and would be interested in any feedback, if you tell me where to send it.
That sounds exciting Ian - especially if I do a follow-up video. I’m reluctant to share any contact details here in comments but if you view my profile, you can get in touch via my Instagram link. They allow DMs on Instagram 👍
Beatles filmed in Stratford! East End of London and we’re on horseback as well and John walking around! The location has changed these day as several buildings were taken down and Angel lane has changed
@@TudorSmith Yes, the location where all four Beatles are checking out their glasses is outside the Stratford Theatre, and they're in front of the fencing which used to run off to one side. Incidentally I suggest looking at some of the photographs taken when they were filming around the tree**. I seem to remember one showed a very small track to the left of the tree, or something like that. Thanks for doing this, I been trying to find these locations myself using the old photos and street view ;-) John is walking down Kings Road at Markham Sq with the gardens on his left (it checks out on street view)......** A useful site for 'stills' is 'The Beatles' 'The Beatles filming Strawberry Field Forever (33 photos).
@@SuperNevile Yeah the phtots with the tracks were what made me do a second video. That first tree was actually not far from the actual location but it wasn't the tree! Hey, interesting info on Stratford. Thanks for that.
@@TudorSmith Should have watched Part 2! Incidentally there is a photo of the fence they are in front of in the PL vid. If you notice 25 secs in there is a sign saying Theatre Royal behind them. The fence is shown in a photo on the net. I have have tried to reply with the link but Y/T won't let me. So if you google The Old Angel Lane, Stratford E15, (Remember Angel Lane), there is a photo of the environs in the 60's and the fencing at the Theatre Royal is there if you scroll through. They were also photo'd on horse back in a local car park (probably a bomb site ~ 'The Debry'), and there is a photo of them in 'The Salway Arms', Angel Lane where they were based....Cheers. PS Just noticed the pink area 'bombed area' on the map....that must be 'The Debry' they are riding out of! Only the theatre is left.
....brilliant stuff!....I'm a Beatle nutcase ...and I think you're spot on with that tree...just to stand in the same spot as The Beatles by that tree!... blows my head off!...I totally feel the vibe in what you are doing...I'm from Liverpool myself and went through the Beatlemania back in the 60's I'm 72 now....but I know one day I will stand by that tree!...(maybe climb it)....but I might have to bring me own ladder Hahaha....thank you so much.....
Aw Frank I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Let your imagination take you to that tree (if it is the one or not) and climb to the top of that branch. It’d be wonderful if you could take the trip because even standing by the lake or the Arch is enough to know the Fab Four we’re also there! 👍
Tudor, you've inspired us here in Melbourne to search for one of the trees that Beatles fans climbed to see them on the balcony of the Southern Cross Hotel (now demolished). Check it out in Episode 5 of our podcast
@@TudorSmith thanks for the reply. Hope you aren’t offended but we used a little snippet of you (and others) in our first couple of episodes (maybe second) .. it’s an affectionate take on the whole nostalgic hunting down of Beatles locations and so on. Having reviewed all these trends we then start to approach the Australasian tour with similar methods. An actor friend reads from a great poem from 1964 about the Beatles in Adelaide. I reckon you’d like the dramatic style. Keep up your fun videos
Of course, there was always the exception to the rule on the "no singles on albums" bit. Eleanor Rigby and Yellow Submarine are both on Revolver. Great video and good detective work, well made.
Actually, right before Revolver, they had the Paperback Writer/Rain single. Eleanor Rigby/Yellow Submarine was released as a single along with the album.
The tree nor the stump no longer exists. Its location is on the golf course roughly in the middle of a green/fairway. I was there earlier this year attempting to locate myself
@@TudorSmith Anyway, you definitely take us on a Sodden Mystery Tour, which I really appreciate as a Londoner in the middle of dry Spain. Quite magical.
A great piece of detective work, I've a nasty feeling that the tree was lost when they put the golf course there. The filming of 'I Am The Walrus' was shot just down the road in West Malling, on the old airfield. I think it is covered in houses now.
Mike, the more I look at my findings, and the more I look at the original music video, and the more I read from peoples comments, I'm pretty sure your right. I've been doing some more investigations and I think I'm going to have to do a part two for this video, and actually visit the stump (or the location of the stump) and put the theory to bed once and for all!
Oh and the West Malling Airfield is now Kings Hill. I remember seeing the B17 Sally B at an airshow once at the West Malling Airfiled, not knowing of its Beatles connections though.
It’s interesting . They kept the split tree! Why you keep a dead tree Which was struck by lightning? Coz it must b the right tree! D b nice to investigate, ask around, town hall or something! Must b a reason!
Now that I've seen it, I feel like I've been there...I love both videos, but I wish they could have filmed some of "Strawberry Fields Forever" at Strawberry Fields...Good job of sleuthing 53 years later. (That's the tree.)
I have the ‘Beatles London’ map of Knole already mentioned in another comment so let me know how I can send you a copy if need be. You may also be interested to know that the other parts of the Penny Lane video ( the walking around bits ) were actually filmed in Stratford East London and the Liverpool parts were spliced in as they didn’t have time to go back there themselves.
Tony has got back to me...he thought the tree had gone...I think he was like...a waiter at the tea party, so he should remember if the tree was near to the other stuff...I've asked him (on FB)...now you need to find out locations for the MMT airfield...is there anything left in that housing estate?!!! (I've driven round it myself aimlessly!!) Danny
The old West Malling Aerodrome where I believe they filmed MMT is now a vast complex of “out of town” offices. Looks like an industrial estate but not for retail. I doubt there’s anything left of the old airstrip either. Shame!
@@TudorSmith Further to Tony getting back to me...he has indicated that that could well be the tree..he was part of the production team and a waiter (as I thought)...so I reckon that's the tree. Re MMT....when I went scouting about I thought I saw the original ticket office/booth among the Estate. Danny
I got this off the NT site: "Knole Park is open to the general public and pedestrians can walk in for free. Non-members arriving by car just to visit the parkland can use nearby Sevenoaks Town Car Park (satnav TN13 1LW, free on Sundays and Bank Holidays)." You might be able to approach the ticket office at the park entrance and say you just want to walk about. They might let you in but I believe NT manage the car park near the house. But you can access the grounds from a nearby street as there's a public footpath that enters the park and goes right through it. It's worth a visit.
The tree isn’t there anymore it was taken down many years ago unfortunately. I did think I found the scarred earth area where the tree stood.when I visited in 2014, but it was felled many years ago.
Actually if you look at the original pictures the tree is not just a stump...it's still alive...so it will have grown in the 54 years....so the extra growth on the bit where Paul was standing is OK!! Danny
I often wonder who was driving the car that goes past as The Beatles were filming, and did they ever realise that the arty looking crowd of people standing around a tree was in fact The Fabs
Let me take you down, coz I’m going to Knole Park ……….. ! The point is that the GPS location is neither here nor there. The film is of an existential location that could be anywhere in England. Most people probably think the film was shot near Penny Lane in one of the many parks and open spaces around Liverpool and Allerton. ‘ Strawberry Fields ‘ in the song isn’t really about the actual location in liverpool ; it’s a fantasy version in an alternate reality.

Yes Tudor looking at it carefully we can see it's every second british album the Beatles put out that was the one they kept singles off! Funny they did that. They stopped with Abbey Road and Let It Be though both had singles off! They should've kept SFF/PL on Peppers and as a single too ( but with only one side an A side to keep the #1 spot because as u know the singles figures were halved because it was originally a double A side ) ! 🤡
Yes I saw an interview with George Martin who explained how they thought that the public shouldn’t have to pay double - well you know, pay for the single and then buy the album too and it also contained the single. I’m glad the changed that way of thinking later in for the album releases!

Amazing mate thank you so very much!
You're very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
It's funny! I pronounce it BE-AT-LES from the Help film too! People look at me like I am crazy! Great Video! Thanks!

There are probably so many memories people could offer up that a) no one has heard before and b) if we were to ask people of the time, they probably wouldn't remember :-)
Anyway I'm feeling spurred on to do a follow-up video and really locate the tree's posiiton in the park once and for all!
Really interesting video of a famous step back in time of the Fab Four. Top Man for sharing this, thank you.
You’re welcome 😊

A very informative video and you have a great presenting style
I appreciate that thank you!

Thanks for that interesting dig into Beatles history.
My pleasure. I hope you found it as interesting to watch as I did filming it 👍
Yess I’ve always wondered where that amazing video was filmed! I hope to visit next year! Brilliant video. Thank you! Cheers
Definitely worth a stroll around the park if you’re in the area 👍
I appreciate you making this video as I have been looking for the trees in the video for a while. The split tree is not the McCartney tree - if you pause the Strawberry Fields video at 1.13 you can see McCartney is really a significant distance off the ground. Probably twice the height of the tree in your video.
Yeah the McCartney tree was considerably bigger wasn't it.

What a video! So interesting. Thanks

Correct, had the same idea concerning identification
Well done. Very interesting,thank you.
Many thanks David!
You found it,good research 👍👍
I’d like to think so. 54 years is a long time for a landscape to change 👍
@@TudorSmith it’s one of their most poetic video’s. Really congratulations. Very well done 👍❤️
If you get a hold copy of 'The Beatles London' by Piet Schreuders, Mark Lewisohn & Adem Smith. It shows a map the of the site of Oak tree. Maybe worth a look. Good book too.

@@TudorSmith ..yes, I enjoyed it, thanks. Very good. Thanks to youtube alogrithm, it came up on my suggested playlist.
Thank - you 🙏
Hi. Yeah I do believe the tree no longer exists. But it was fun trying to find it! I was getting my hopes up!
Strawberry Fields Forever has a really dream-like quality. Almost like a mixture of Dali and Lewis Carol. They were at their zenith in '66-'67. Enjoyed your vid.
Lennon liked Lewis Carol - I wonder if that influence spilled over into SF
@@TudorSmith Thank you ! Will comment more later, yes, would get the guitar & write a song with Sir Paul !
It certainly looks like the right tree to me although it looks like they may have made the ground level up a bit when they laid out the golf course. Great stuff
I'm with you all the way on that one :-)
I agree with all your findings! You hit the nail on the head for all 3 shots 🎶🌟💙🌟🎶
I’m sure many will disagree but I think I’m content that I found everything 👍
Nice film Tudor. I think you found the tree too.
Thanks. It certainly looked like the correct tree to me - further investigation la prove otherwise though 🙂
Have you been to, or plan to visit Chiswick House where they filmed the promotional videos for Paperback Writer and Rain?
It hadn't occured to me actually, but now you mention it, that could make for an interesting video!
Very impressive, especially the Archway.
One of the few locations that can’t be disputed eh? 😊
@@TudorSmith agreed! There can be only one!

New video being produced right now - I found the shop 👍
@@TudorSmith
Fantastic.. can't wait. 👍👍
Fantastic! Thank you that was great fun…..hmmmm draft in 1973 released in 1976 Mull Of Kintyre?
You must be a super fan lol!
Bill Bruford was from Seven Oaks !! 🚬😎
I always thought that the Strawberry Fields video was filmed in Sefton Park Liverpool!.
Could I have a copy please?
That sounds exciting Ian - especially if I do a follow-up video. I’m reluctant to share any contact details here in comments but if you view my profile, you can get in touch via my Instagram link. They allow DMs on Instagram 👍
Beatles filmed in Stratford! East End of London and we’re on horseback as well and John walking around! The location has changed these day as several buildings were taken down and Angel lane has changed
Yeah someone pointed that out to me. Would it be worth a visit?

Aw Frank I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Let your imagination take you to that tree (if it is the one or not) and climb to the top of that branch. It’d be wonderful if you could take the trip because even standing by the lake or the Arch is enough to know the Fab Four we’re also there! 👍
The tree was felled many years ago sadly…
Tudor, you've inspired us here in Melbourne to search for one of the trees that Beatles fans climbed to see them on the balcony of the Southern Cross Hotel (now demolished). Check it out in Episode 5 of our podcast
Wow that sounds interesting 👍
Oh yeah good call! I need to be more precise with my detective work lol! Exceptions to the rule are kind of like “rules are meant to be broken!” 😎

A great piece of detective work, I've a nasty feeling that the tree was lost when they put the golf course
there.

Oh wow - some great information there. The beauty of filming, it's so easy to fool the viewer :-)
I have that book too it says the tree is near the birdhouse ✌
@Adam Bond we’re getting closer to confirmation eh?
Tony has got back to me...he thought the tree had gone...I think he was like...a waiter at the tea party, so he should remember if the tree was near to the other stuff...I've asked him (on FB)...now you need to find out locations for the MMT airfield...is there anything left in that housing estate?!!!
(I've driven round it myself aimlessly!!)
Danny
The old West Malling Aerodrome where I believe they filmed MMT is now a vast complex of “out of town” offices. Looks like an industrial estate but not for retail. I doubt there’s anything left of the old airstrip either. Shame!
@@TudorSmith Further to Tony getting back to me...he has indicated that that could well be the tree..he was part of the production team and a waiter (as I thought)...so I reckon that's the tree. Re MMT....when I went scouting about I thought I saw the original ticket office/booth among the Estate.
Danny
@@TheWalrusWasDanny that’s brilliant. It certainly looked a likely candidate to me. I’ll have to do a follow up video lol
@@TudorSmith I'll have to make a venture there...do you have to pay to get to it, or is not actually in the National Trust bit?
I got this off the NT site: "Knole Park is open to the general public and pedestrians can walk in for free. Non-members arriving by car just to visit the parkland can use nearby Sevenoaks Town Car Park (satnav TN13 1LW, free on Sundays and Bank Holidays)."
You might be able to approach the ticket office at the park entrance and say you just want to walk about. They might let you in but I believe NT manage the car park near the house. But you can access the grounds from a nearby street as there's a public footpath that enters the park and goes right through it. It's worth a visit.
The tree isn’t there anymore it was taken down many years ago unfortunately. I did think I found the scarred earth area where the tree stood.when I visited in 2014, but it was felled many years ago.

the split tree has some green growth coming out of it. couldn't be the tree that was completely dead in 1967
You're absolutely right. I was getting my hopes up! 👍
The fact that it wasn’t filmed on strawberry fields bothers me more than it should
Actually if you look at the original pictures the tree is not just a stump...it's still alive...so it will have grown in the 54 years....so the extra growth on the bit where Paul was standing is OK!!
Danny
I think you’re right you know. Those old trees hang on for years!
11:55 You've nailed it.
I may be wrong ha ha! Watch this space for some updates!
The tree from Strawberry fields forever isn’t there any more.
Indeed. It’s long gone now 😔
I often wonder who was driving the car that goes past as The Beatles were filming, and did they ever realise that the arty looking crowd of people standing around a tree was in fact The Fabs
They were probably muttering under their breath “Damn arty types ruining a good piano” 🤣
@@TudorSmith :D "students!! "
great research although apparently that tree is nowhere to be found!
I might have found it...see my part 2 video :-)
Let me take you down, coz I’m going to Knole Park ……….. ! The point is that the GPS location is neither here nor there. The film is of an existential location that could be anywhere in England. Most people probably think the film was shot near Penny Lane in one of the many parks and open spaces around Liverpool and Allerton. ‘ Strawberry Fields ‘ in the song isn’t really about the actual location in liverpool ; it’s a fantasy version in an alternate reality.
Yeah that’s the beauty of film - it can be anywhere you like.

Dream destination is Liverpool and many other Beatles related places.
There must be so many locations in Liverpool quite apart from their childhood homes. I’ve started a “London locations” video. Watch this space 👍
@@TudorSmith yes BUT every 2nd album did have singles on it ! 🤡🎱
