The Galaxy s6 was honestly the first android phone i ever wanted at all. It's absolutely GORGEOUS, to this day it has this sort of magical glow to it to me.
I had a battery explode in an electronic device once, not a smartphone, the Focus V Carta dabbing e-rig. The batteries inside were extremely hot to where I couldn’t touch it, dropped the battery, it began to smoke and make a crackling sound, then it caught on fire and I had to put it out quickly with water, it was crazy and panic inducing.
I had my 6 Plus from launch. It kept going no problem, even after getting run over by 2 cars and an 18 wheeler truck! With a few blown pixels, it was fine till I upgraded at the 8 Plus launch. I’m still using my 8 Plus as it does all I need, has the perfect 16:8 screen without the crappy PWM of OLED, which I and 10% of all people can’t tolerate.
The iPhone X and XS Max were the prettiest iPhones of all time. The vertical cameras just looked so much classier than the current. I mean I love my 15 Plus, bit the X's were SO pretty.
@@disgracecentralI’m still using 6s and XR, they surprisingly last that much unlike iPhone flagships, oddly enough XR lasted more than than my dad’s XS Max
As someone who had a S10e for _many years_ before my parents had me upgrade with them to the S22+ due to an AT&T plan, It was indeed a very good phone. Even with the updates, it didn't slow down and kept pushing and pushing like a trooper. I do miss that I had to trade it for the S22, even if the S22 had a fantastic camera.
The Nokia N70 and other Symbian devices of the era were smartphones because their operating system was open, and 3rd party developers could write native .sis applications. Other non smartphone devices could still install java apps and browse the internet. On the N70 you could have native apps such as - custom mp3 players with equalizer, winrar, office suite (excel, word processing documents etc), a flashlight app and a lot of emulators. And many other native apps that I never tried.
iPhone 4 was the first iPhone I bought. Got it from my friend for $400 with a bad ESN. Flashed it to MetroPCS and it pretty much sucked when I wasn’t on Wi-Fi. iPhone 6 Plus was the first iPhone I bought brand new. Is jump in screen size from 3.5 inches to 5.5“. Bent it from keeping it in my back pocket. Traded it in when I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile. iPhone X I bought off a whim. Went in buying a charger and came out spending more money than I intended. Had it for 22 months until I switched over to the iPhone 11. Not a day goes by I wish I had kept my phone and not sold it. iPhone 13 mini was the iPhone that made me realize I didn’t need a iPhone Pro Max. Battery lasted me the whole day and it never slowed down. Only reason I traded it in to get the new one was because I was starting to go back to school in person And the battery couldn’t keep up anymore. I also owned an iPhone 6s Plus, 7+,11, 12 Pro Max , 14 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max. Pretty much been an iPhone boy from the start. The one time I decided to switch to android was when I got the galaxy note 7. And we all know how that ended up.
15:30 tbh I'm still very happy that xiaomi flagships still come with ir blasters, its surprisingly useful for me particularly. It comes bundled with the most comprehensive ir remote app I've ever seen on a phone with the feature with presets for thousands of devices. I found someone giving away a free 40 inch tv but they lost the remote. No problem, I'll just use my phone. AC unit in my apartment? Well the remote is here but... EW what the hell did the previous tenant do to it?!?! Disgusting! That's fine tho, my phone works instead.
Chinese phones need some love too . Former One plus fanboy here , After Carl pei left one plus , I'm just confused. I'll choose Transsion maybe ( infinix , techno , iTel ) or Xiaomi or BBK again ( huawei wish could be ) . nothing phone is also nice ! carl pei is there , I should forget the past , If new nothing is good I'll go there too. cause I'll never settle , like a certain company out there. ( that settled )
@staciefreshener4032 a lot of the Chinese phone brands are quite decent while being cheaper than other options. Some of them have issues with bloat but for someone tech savvy like me it's easy to remove it all. I have a oneplus phone laying around as my backup in case my good one breaks and I've used it a bit just to test it out and it's surprisingly good for being midrange level. If you're choosing a new brand, xiaomi is certainly good because their phones are shockingly cheap for what you get and they're of pretty good quality. And they're very durable from my experience too, I'm kinda clumsy sometimes and have dropped my 12 pro countless times and it's still working and not even a scratch on it.
as an ex S7 user i absolutely did not love that phone lol. overheated like no other phone ive ever had from the day i got it in 2016, lagged real bad, battery life was 2-3 hours SOT. it was a horrible phone
Seriously. I had the S7 edge and it was the only phone I had for less than the 2 year contract. I was over it after only a few months. And honestly turned me off of the galaxy line
@@brendanfr old samsungs had a big software problem as the software sucked bad. Now days, samsung phones are super good. I dont know how you are facing issues in s22 ultra as that thing is super snappy (i dont own it my friend owns it)
I feel for tech youtubers in this day and age - I admit I haven't watched your videos as much like I used to binge them bc frankly I find the phones around today boring as hell. I would defo keep watching historical videos like this, this is understandably a bigger undertaking to a single review but keep up the good work. I also watched MKBHD's every samsung video which is why i was interested in this
I HAD THE HUAWEI P20 LITE FOR SOME YEARS IT WAS A TOP TIER PHONE!!! I EVEN DROPPED IT FROM A VERY HIGH HEIGHT AND IT SURVIVED WITH ALMOST NO SCRATCHES (got slightly bent on the sim card tray) TRULY AN AMAZING PHONE!!!
That Huawei P20 Pro is the only Android phone I ever owned, and it was wonderful; the software felt very iOS-like, which was very controversial but convenient for me, and the photos were stunning, it’s still my favorite camera experience I’ve ever had in a phone. I would have kept using Huawei devices had it not been for the Google ban, so I just went back to the trustworthy boring old IPhone
For me the iPhone 5s was the greatest! Ran so smoothly for years and years. And also the perfect size for me. I absolutely loved it! That's why I'm on the 13 mini now that I also really enjoy.
It’s surprising to me just how many of these phones I owned over the years. The last phone I bought was a 12 Pro Max nearly 4 years ago now. It’s still buttery smooth and runs fine. Battery life is diminished so I more than likely will upgrade this year due to necessity vs the new “wow” factor
The deciding factor for what counted as a smartphone and what didn't in the early days was that smartphones had a full OS with the ability to install 3rd party applications, while non-smarphones (i.e. feature phones) were only able to run Java applications, which were much more limited. Internet access was less of a factor, as later feature phones had simple web browsers.
For those who wonder, at 0:21 , the iPhones there are the 5c, SE, 5s, SE 2020/2022 (hard to tell the difference), 6s, XS, X, 11/12, 12 pro, XR, and a 6
I’ve had every iPhone from the 3GS to the 12 Pro Max which is my main device. Every iPhone except for the iPhone 6 Plus, 8 Plus, XS and 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max.
the shift in design from the iphone 5s and the iphone 6 was definitely a "you just had to be there" moment... no shock that the iphone 6 topped this list lol.
The galaxy S3 was my very first smartphone and I loved the multi color LED notification light. I wish they’d bring that feature back. I set it to flash yellow for Snapchat notifications, blue for twitter, purple for Instagram and green for text messages 😭
Galaxy S2 was my first smartphone. Still have it today, and it's still fantastic. Also, it is one of the most itterated on devices. There were 26 hardware variations of the S2 worldwide
The S8 is such a beautiful phone. Especially the front. The samsungs before that isn't even close design-wise. I still use the S6 edge as a work phone, but only to take calls with. There is nothing to it that makes me want to pick it up and use it in any other way. And I don't feel that they done a more good looking phone after either. Maybe the S9.
4:18 s9+ Man that was such a great phone, perfect spot for the finger print scanner, it was also my first real smartphone, the one i had prior had like 2gb of storage and lagged at every moment it could
iPhone 3G, Galaxy Ace, iPhone 5, iPhone SE, Xiaomi 8, Poco F2 pro , OnePlus Nord 2, Xiaomi 14. Stopped buying iPhones when they got too expensive (in my opinion). The phone I am using now is the most expensive I've ever had. 685€ for the 512 GB model. There is no upgrade feeling like it was in the wilder years. But if you do not need the best secondary sensors you can get now a truly good phone for under 500 bucks which can last you over 3 years.
My mom owned a Samsung Galaxy S3 before she passed away and I didn’t even get a smartphone until September 2014 when I switched from Verizon to Straight Talk, which now is pretty ironic that Verizon owns them now. My very first iPhone was an old 4 that my dad no longer used that was on its last legs but I could see myself owning more iPhones even back then. Once I got the 5S then I really was able to start a whole new experience since it was a brand new phone for me and then when I got the 6, that was mainly with getting a phone with more memory and I could see a good difference in battery life as well in comparison to the 5S when I had that brand new. When I got to my current phone with the 8 Plus that I’ve had for four years, that was mainly for needing more memory (got 128 GB now in comparison to 32) and a much bigger screen. My current battery health is at 73% but otherwise everything else is still working great for the phone.
I'm sad that none of the Samsung Notes made it to the list. As for the s5, I think the sales were disappointing. That's probably why they went with the radical design with the s6
My husband had an S8 Active with a swollen battery. And he KEPT USING it for over a year like that. He’s the type a guy to not upgrade his phone unless he absolutely needs it. But I finally got him to get rid of that bomb and get an S10.
Galaxy S6 was not controversial at all, that phone was phenomenal and much loved. Also very popular since they ditched the plastic/cheap materials. I did remember some people being upset that they could no longer remove the back to replace the battery easily but I rather have a premium look over that any day
I absolutely LOVED my iphone 6S rose gold phone lol I had this phone until 2 months ago it was just sitting in my drawer and gave it to my 11 y/o niece as her first iPhone. I never had any issues with it although people were saying they had bad battery drain but not me. She was so happy and this phone will be with her until her mom decides to upgrade it. I have had every Iphone since the 3GS and this one was my absolute favorite.
I've used many iPhones and Galaxies. My absolute favourites are: iPhones: -Xs Max, gold -6s plus, rose gold -6 plus, silver -4, white Galaxies and Notes: -Note 20 Ultra, copper -Note 5, white -S6 Edge Plus, gold -S23 Ultra, green -Fold 5, cream
Till this day I love my S7 Edge. After 3 years it has run hot and got so toasty it had shut down for a week, so I had to upgrade. I still remember how contented I was when I’ve received it 😊.
In 2022 i got an iPhone 5s from my great grandparent (my main was a 13mini) and even with ios12 it was still usable , you couldn’t have high expectations obviously but it did its work while using instagram , whatsapp , tiktok and a few google apps, anyway it just had 16gb of storage. A year later maybe around november 2023 I dropped it accidentally from a bunk bed and it finally stopped working😢.
Prices too are a BIG factor for sales lol we forget iphone was like 400 bucks then iphone 6 like 400 500 range. Bro, base modelnphones are like 700 800 now then plus and ultras like 1400$ . Jesus christ, how do we compare?
I had both the s7 and s4. Both were fantastic phones, and I wasn't ready to upgrade from my s7 but my family changed carriers so it had to go. I've stuck as a Samsung fan boy for a long time, but when they started following in apples shoes and stopped innovating like Samsung, it's making apple look much better. What I mean by that is the loss of a headphone jack, no more SD card since the s20fe (which I have and enjoy) and not including a charger in the box anymore. Crazy how they changed in just 4 years
iPhone prices have gone insane in Europe. I remember when the regular 14 had cost 999€ the the 14 pro ridiculous 1399€. The 15 pro had gone back to 1199€, but 1k is the maximum a phone should cost.
So basically a smartphone = a phone with native 3rd party app support. "Dumb" phones can browse the internet and install java apps (Sony Ericsson K750i for example).
Even I owned an iPhone 6 for a year or two as a second phone - the problems were quite noticeable, especially since it was a few years old at that point. But yeah, if you were following tech back then, the hype was unreal. Other iPhones were hyped, but nothing on that level - one of my favourite youtube videos to this day is iJustine camping out of the Apple store for *two days* to be first.
The S3 was kinda weird. The international variant did not have 4G. There was a 4G option (if I remember correctly, the GT-I9301), but the international i9300 was 3G.
My mom has a P20 Pro she got in 2018….which I must admit still works great today. Being such an old Huawei phone the updates schedule is of course nearly non-existent and because my mom uses the phone for her home banking I’ve been trying to make her upgrade….but since the phone still handles everything fairly well, the battery is still quite good (lasting nearly the whole day) and the camera is _very_ good, my mom refuses to change her phone. Me, I used to have a Samsung S10 until my then 5-years-old dog decided my phone looked like a nice squeaky toy and bit on it….crushing the by then 1-year-old phone. 😌😂

The batteries inside were extremely hot to where I couldn’t touch it, dropped the battery, it began to smoke and make a crackling sound, then it caught on fire and I had to put it out quickly with water, it was crazy and panic inducing.
Excellent music choice !!! The persona series has one of the best sound tracks in any videogame !
Fire phone jumpscare! That was my first ever phone back in 2014!
I had a windows phone. We definitely backed the wrong horses.
I remember articles back in the day saying like 5c is basically cheap 5s or something and its counted together
The iPhone X and XS Max were the prettiest iPhones of all time. The vertical cameras just looked so much classier than the current. I mean I love my 15 Plus, bit the X's were SO pretty.
Four months from now, my iPhone 6 will complete 10 years of service. Legendary ❤
Ain’t NO WAY you’re still using an iPhone 6 dawg
why not? it still works doesn't it?
@@disgracecentralI’m still using 6s and XR, they surprisingly last that much unlike iPhone flagships, oddly enough XR lasted more than than my dad’s XS Max
@@disgracecentral I wish I was lying. But it's the truth
@@notgray88 Of course, it's still my main phone that I use daily
at first i was like "wtf iphone 6????" bc i thought it would be the nokia 1100 but than i read the title again
Surprised HTC ONE is not on the list. That phone in the UK was the most desirable phone to have.
I remember when the iPhone 5 came out, the memes with ridiculously tall iPhones saying "iPhone 20"
Apple from the 3GS to the XS was unstoppable. Truely the golden era of smartphones
My OnePlus 12r has one and I love it.
@@kandikidzora yeah.. i wouldnt bother with them. i had the S22 ultra and it was unfortunately familiar problems. iphone or pixel is the way to go
@@brendanfr old samsungs had a big software problem as the software sucked bad. Now days, samsung phones are super good. I dont know how you are facing issues in s22 ultra as that thing is super snappy (i dont own it my friend owns it)
Hey i think the iPhone 11 is the best phone ever cam out from apple , its so reliable 😅
I feel for tech youtubers in this day and age - I admit I haven't watched your videos as much like I used to binge them bc frankly I find the phones around today boring as hell. I would defo keep watching historical videos like this, this is understandably a bigger undertaking to a single review but keep up the good work. I also watched MKBHD's every samsung video which is why i was interested in this
DUDE u gotta put these phones in a gun safe or something that S8 looks so dangerous haha
Where are the blackberries?
And google pixels
These obviously didnt sell well enough to be featured in this top 25
@@adebanjoabayomi1892Unfortunately, the google pixel didn't sell as much
@@adebanjoabayomi1892they are not available in many countries and they are just "new" to the smartphone market
Because most people have bad taste. Blackberries were amazing!
I’ve owned 4 Samsung phones before I got my iPhone 15, a s7, s10, note 20, and s22. The s10 has to be my favorite out of them all
iPhone 5 was so amazing. If they made a version with the same body but with the same screens/frontside as the iPhone 15 Pro, I’d buy it in a heartbeat
my favorite iphone designs will forever be the 5s, the 7 and the 11. (the iphone 11 was absolutely under rated IMO)
Great Video Josh! Brings back good memories of times past.
Motorola moto z was the First phone without headphone jack.

That’s an obsolete phone now according to apple … do banking apps still work on that phone ?
For me the iPhone 5s was the greatest! Ran so smoothly for years and years. And also the perfect size for me.
I absolutely loved it!
That's why I'm on the 13 mini now that I also really enjoy.
It’s surprising to me just how many of these phones I owned over the years. The last phone I bought was a 12 Pro Max nearly 4 years ago now. It’s still buttery smooth and runs fine. Battery life is diminished so I more than likely will upgrade this year due to necessity vs the new “wow” factor
You could also just replace the battery
We still love nokia 6600
We still use Nokia 6600
@@Abaddon92 nah
I'm surprised that Huawei P30 series didn't menage to get on this list 😮
The deciding factor for what counted as a smartphone and what didn't in the early days was that smartphones had a full OS with the ability to install 3rd party applications, while non-smarphones (i.e. feature phones) were only able to run Java applications, which were much more limited. Internet access was less of a factor, as later feature phones had simple web browsers.
Loved the vid & learned a lot!
Wow! Being used to my 15 Plus, the bezels on the X's look huge! 😭
Same. Im using my 15 pro max ultra with 1petabyte fully paid here in philippines

From this top I used Nokia 6600 and iPhone 6s. I still have the iPhone 6s and it's a very good smartphone.
My s9+ is still the goat. Still use it in 2024 as a backup phone for music and videos
For those who wonder, at 0:21 , the iPhones there are the 5c, SE, 5s, SE 2020/2022 (hard to tell the difference), 6s, XS, X, 11/12, 12 pro, XR, and a 6
10:12 the N90 ad is shot in Malaysia? That’s the Waterfall building right at the back… the sillouette is iconic. So weird seeing it here…
Great effort and superb video Josh.
Watching this video on a Cricket Magic 5G makes me reminisce to the days of old when a lot of these old devices were advertised as new.
My girlfriend had an S8 at the same time I had an iPhone 6, bro, it looked amazing, and even now, it still looks amazing.
I always appreciate these videos, you deserve way more subs
The S8 is such a beautiful phone. Especially the front. The samsungs before that isn't even close design-wise. I still use the S6 edge as a work phone, but only to take calls with. There is nothing to it that makes me want to pick it up and use it in any other way. And I don't feel that they done a more good looking phone after either. Maybe the S9.
Love the red Canucks hat you have in another video .This is our year😁
4:18 s9+
Man that was such a great phone, perfect spot for the finger print scanner, it was also my first real smartphone, the one i had prior had like 2gb of storage and lagged at every moment it could
iPhone 3G, Galaxy Ace, iPhone 5, iPhone SE, Xiaomi 8, Poco F2 pro , OnePlus Nord 2, Xiaomi 14.
Love that you put an Arabic commercial for the Huawei P20 lol
I'm sad that none of the Samsung Notes made it to the list. As for the s5, I think the sales were disappointing. That's probably why they went with the radical design with the s6
Your samsung galaxy s8 battery got swollen? i thought mrwhosetheboss is the only one😅
I miss the design and feeling of the 6s and the 3DTouch
I've used many iPhones and Galaxies. My absolute favourites are:
iPhones:
-Xs Max, gold
-6s plus, rose gold
-6 plus, silver
-4, white
Galaxies and Notes:
-Note 20 Ultra, copper
-Note 5, white
-S6 Edge Plus, gold
-S23 Ultra, green
-Fold 5, cream
I’ve seen the iPhone 6 event so many times, i lost my mind when the music came on 🤣
Why iphone 6 sold so much? Price?

Can't believe we've slowly accepted camera bumps
I have a Samsung Galaxy A23 5G. Got it for my birthday last year. Best phone I ever had. I love it.
You know it’s always a good day when Josh makes a new video
I loved my galaxy S4. It was perfect for me at the time. It's crazy how far we've come
I wish Note7 exist, it's the best looking 16:9 phone ever, unluckily it exploded...
Wow! Phones with one camera. We’ve come a long way.
I’m sure there are reasons why, but would’ve liked to have seen some love for HTC or Sanyo.
I LOVED my HTC evo. The camera was awesome, it was fast, and had a kick stand!
Thank you for mentionning the Nokia N86, really the best phone I ever had, so ahed of it's time
My mom has a P20 Pro she got in 2018….which I must admit still works great today.
My first and ever favorite was 4S. I begged Apple to get back to the classics and they did (kinda) with 14😂
The guy in the nokia 6600 ad looks like The Tech Chap😂
