How to Play Erik Satie | Gymnopédie No.1 [Tutorial]

  • Here is my complete tutorial on "how to" learn, practice, and play Gymnopédie No.1 by Erik Satie.
    This piano tutorial explains how to approach, practice, and design this beautiful piece.
    Everything is explained with colored scores, and the sheet music is shown on the screen.
    You can download the sheet music for free, where I also wrote down the fingerings.
    The Gymnopédies, published in Paris starting in 1888, are three piano compositions written by French composer and pianist Erik Satie. He claimed they were inspired by reading Gustave Flaubert's novel 'Salammbô.' They were the first compositions with which Satie tried to cut himself loose from his father and stepmother's conventional 19th-century salon music environment. Satie, who was in his early twenties at the time, had just moved from his father's residence to lodgings in Montmartre and had already started an enduring friendship with the romantic poet Patrice Contamine. When Gymnopédie No. 1 was published in August 1888, it was accompanied by a verse written by Contamine.
    The work's unusual title comes from the French form of "gymnopaedia," the ancient Greek word for an annual festival where young men danced naked - or perhaps simply unarmed. The source of the title has been a subject of debate.

    Omg thank you so much for your content! I am a self-taught adult beginner who’s working on this piece. You have no idea how much your content helped me. I feel that after I practiced and managed to execute some of the things you taught, my performance is immediately boosted! I don’t have the patience to read and digest music theories so I always struggle to interpret pieces. Your video made knowledge accessible! They are practical. And listening to your tutorial can get me gradually get familiar with music terminologies. And everything is free.😂 👍Followed and will definitely watch your other videos!

      Indeed. I just started learning this piece, which I have loved for many years. My piano teacher was telling me that a lot of people don’t realize how it ends… he knows a wedding pianist who changes the final chord to major so that if the bride uses this piece as her processional, it doesn’t sound so peculiar!

    This is excellent! I've looked at several videos and they all just tell you what notes to press or state the obvious (which I don't see the point as if you can't read the sheet music you shouldn't be playing this piece).

    A beginner piece? Does ABRSM or RSM list it as level 1 or 2 piece (I do not think so). It is at least an intermediate piece. Thank you for your tutorial. Your approach is very interesting. The problem when learning this piece is that everyone plays it differently - there are different finger and hand distributions in the chords and emphasis on certain notes on chords. It is a weird (but fascinating) piece to learn. I have eagerly subscribed to your channel! Your tutorials are the best I have seen (even comparing with Tonebase).

    I wondered how to play the left hand chords which included the same F# you were holding for 4 measures with your right hand....

    • @Antune
      @Antune  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can let go of the F# just before playing the chord because the right pedal will keep it sustained. Then keep the F# with the right hand right before letting go of the chord.
      You can see how I do it around 6:53
      In this way, F# will resonate throughout the 4 bars while you can simultaneously play the chords.

    Hello @Antune
    Could you please help me understand why some pianists choose to play the chords with the left hand while others with the right hand. What would is the correct/best way to learn it for a beginner? Is it just a matter of preference or is there a broader explanation for this? Here’s an example of Rousseau playing the same piece differently: th-cam.com/video/2WfaotSK3mI/w-d-xo.html
    P.S: I appreciate your videos and knowledge - impeccable teaching and walkthrough.

    • @Antune
      @Antune  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there!
      I believe the people who play the chords with the right hand do it because it feels more comfortable. I am not saying it is correct or wrong, but in my opinion, it doesn’t make any difference in terms of comfort, considering we have to play the chords with the left hand for most of the piece. I prefer to play them with the left hand from the very beginning because it is easier to distinguish both characters (the melody & accompaniment). Good luck!
