Jefferson Bethke is not saying how to receive salvation but talking after the fact. In order to receive it, we must put our trust 'in' Jesus with our change of mind and the Holy Spirit will then lead us. Because it is not enough to believe 'about' Jesus.

To be saved you have to declare that Jesus is your Lord and Savior and believe that just as He was raised from the dead, you will be too. (Romans 10:9) This body is sinful (Romans 6:6) and cannot enter the kingdom of heaven (Mathew 18:3) so we need a new spirit (Holy Spirit is given to us when we accept Jesus as a guarantee that when we get to Heaven, we will receive a new one 2 Corinthians 5:18) to enter Heaven. Romans 6 speaks about us being slaves to sin in this world. How are we going to take our sinful nature with us into the kingdom of heaven? We can't. He explicitly says that in Romans 6:1. So then we must choose (while we are still in our earthly body) to obey Christ so that when He returns, we can live with Him for eternity
Salvation is believing. Nothing else. But while we live on this earth we live godly lives so that we can build our rewards in heaven.

You are so right, so often when things are going wrong we think God has abandon us and we need to do something ourselves apart from him, but if we can just wait until his timing he will see us through, he is always faithful!

Wrong!! Salvation is realizing you're a sinner condemned to hell, and believing that Jesus, who is God in the flesh, died for your sins, was buried, and rose again to give you everlasting life. You need to accept the free gift of eternal life by believing and trusting Jesus alone to save you. Ephesians 2:8-9. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.

James 2: 14-20 New King James Version (NKJV)
      Faith Without Works Is Dead
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, *if it does not have works, is dead.*
18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your[a] works, and I will show you my faith by my[b] works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe-and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?[c]

James 2 is telling us with faith that he wants us to do work. ''Faith without works'' tell us there is such a thing that exists. Someone can have faith and not have any works. That person is still saved.. but God wants us to do a lot of good works like soulwinning, preaching, helping the poor, spreading the truth etc. KJV is the truth

    • @celticbaptist9234

There is a difference between dead faith and no faith. Dead faith is still faith.
If we had to live our life through Christ then that means we have to do good works = works salvation.
Works have nothing to do with salvation.
      *Romans 4: 5 KJV*
[5] But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

For any who say that Believing in Jesus is enough, read James 2: 14-26, if acts are not a requirement along with faith in Jesus, why does James, Jesus' brother, say:
James 2:14-20 New King James Version (NKJV)
    Faith Without Works Is Dead
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your[a] works, and I will show you my faith by my[b] works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe-and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
And Paul in his first letter to the Chorinthians:
1 Chorinthians 13: 2 New King James Version (NKJV)
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, *and though I have all faith*, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, *I am nothing.*
    (emphasis added)
I'll leave you with this thought:
Love is an act, and the greatest act which we hope is never required, is the ACT of submitting our lives, even to death, for the sake of the Gospel.

If you are relying on works to get you to heaven, this is what will happen to you:
      Matthew 7:21-23 KJV
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
      Romans 10:3 KJV
For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
However that person must understand the real will of God:
      John 6:40 KJV
And this is the will of him that sent me, that everyone which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
      1 John 2:17 KJV
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
      Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

JESUS is very specific on what we must do to be saved - JESUS' plan of salvation starts with ACTS 2:38 - repentance, baptism in JESUS name, receiving the HOLY GHOST - with JESUS' salvation you can be delivered, changed, saved - without it you're lost and going to hell.

Smiles ... Jesus offers eternal life and in that life there is forgiveness, holiness, sanctification, righteousness, justification, etc. Jesus, throughout the Gospel of John, directed men to believe in Him for salvation. Once you do, you're baptized with a baptism that is far greater than water (read John the Baptizers words). Once you believe you're born again of the Spirit. Now when you say delivered that has context that is religious as well as Spiritual. Delivered from sin in the Spirit means that sin/ death have no more authority or power over you. In religious circles it deals with activity (ie I used to smoke but since I am saved, I don't smoke anymore). Read John 3:36. Those who believe have eternal life and those who don't remain in their state of being lost, which results in Hell.

You can't get Acts right if you don't the Gospels. Yes they may have been written at least 40 years after the Cross but that's the same with Acts. If you want an early perspective on the Gospel read the letters of Paul.
