Compared to the price of the Mitakon, the Helios stands its ground, especially with swirly bokeh situations. I own a full-frame camera and I use the Helios far more than my modern autofocus lenses to shoot portraits.
100% I've been meaning to use it more but I find myself going for the mitakon even though wide open the Helios is sharper and it's also lighter and smaller
@@taranspictures I guess that's because the Mitakon is significantly faster - and judging by your particular style, which incorporates playing with DOF a lot, it is a significant factor for you.
Great video! You're right: a lot videos talk about objective specs, but the reason many of us make the switch to vintage lenses and film is to get that character. I've been thinking about switching from my Sony A7 to a GFX for about two years now, I just find it hard to justify the cost at the moment. But I'd LOVE to see what I can get with my M42 lenses!
I'm thinking about selling my GFX, it's one of the best cameras I've ever used and I love the results I get but I'm wanting something faster with autofocus so I can focus more on my photography rather than if I'm getting the shot in focus or not
You could get the adapter for Canon EF (autofocus lenses mount, but "dumb" adapter with no electrical contacts) for about the same money as that M42 to GFX. That would enable you to mount yet another adapter, M42, Minolta MC/MD, Pentax K, Nikon F, Olympus OM and so on to that M42 to GFX adapter, each one for less than £10, postage included probably. Literally for every mount except the Canon's own FD mount. What's weird. And have no fear, that Helios lens would be more than stable on that camera, despite having two adapters on top of each other. Problems are starting only when you put something really heavy on it, say 300mm and up lens. The same rule applies for mounting vintage lenses onto Fuji X camera. Cheers
what do you think about the new GF 55 1.7? I do love the mitakon 65 1.4 and using it right now, love the pentax67/105 2.4 look, love the full body portrait taking by 65 1.4, love the 65mm which is 50mm to full frame. but the 55 1.7 has the auto focus......
I haven't used it but the images I have seen are spectacular! Personally I wouldn't get it until it comes down in price drastically but if I had the money, I would be very tempted to get it
@@taranspictures I want to know if the 551.7 has the ability to shot full body portrait like 67 105 2.4, that's the main reason I bought the 65 1.4. but I have not seen many sample shoot as full body portrait.
I can't remember exactly where it is but somewhere in the settings you need to change it so the camera can take photos without a lens attached. When using an adapter the camera thinks there isn't a lens on the camera as there are no electronic components
Thank you for the nice review. Helios lenses are soviet's copy cut from Carl Zeiss Biotar 6 elements in 4 groups design... They stolen the design after WW2 when part of the Germany was belong to USSR... The very first early copies of Helios, with blue chemical coating and 13 blades diagram are closest copy of Biotar using the same type if glass and closest by specs coating... And they are the best out of sll Helios... More late versions start deviating in quantity, glass and coatings used, more and more, causing some of the copies be complitely trash... So if you want best copy of this lens, you should buy original Carl Zeiss Biotar, or silver Helios with 13 blades and blue coating, rest of the later copies might be a gamble😊 Btw - swirly bokeh is a Biotars design's flaw, caused by relatively small radius of field curvature, something lens designers trying to correct snd avoid... But looks like It has own fans this days😊
Some people seem to regard the Soviet dismantling of equipment in East Germany to be looting, it was actually part of the reparation payments agreed upon in the Potsdam Agreement
@@sevabeloruss1616 That is not about looting or anything like that... That is about taking someone's tech, art, culture, coping it and than displaying it as own achievements for propaganda purposes... My father handed me over his old Zenit camera with the same Helios-40-2 like on the video, all with original packaging and documentation... So for the lens it was said there - proudly designed, calculated and developed from scratch by soviet leading optical engineers🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍 That is what it's all about. Not a reparations or looting matter at all... Typical russian imperialistic approach until this days...

Most likely, I think this mitakon is just that tad bit more fun to use as well
wow great video man ! i needed to see how the helios looks on the gfx sensor ! it looks so good
Cheers! It's definitely a set up that I need to use more!

I don't know if it's just my screen while watching on TH-cam, but the photos look really soft to me.
Probably just your screen, the point of the image that is in focus is super sharp but as everything else is very soft
The Helios does render very flat. There isn't that much punch to it. People use it for the bokeh.
Love the Simon pictures 💖
Thank you:)

I've seen a few people do this and I wish I knew about it before I bought my adapters since I could have saved a decent bit of money
Very cool lens! Love the pictures of Skyler 😻

I have a Helios lens with similar adapter on my gfx50s, but it doesn’t take pictures. What is the setting on your camera you’re using?

Thanks! That was it, I found the “no lens” mode. 👍
Lovely cats!!!
They are adorable!
