"After the unbelievable success of the evening dedicated to cultural harmony on 27 August, it seemed as if the stifling clouds enveloping Assam were washed away by welcome rain. The performance by the Khasi troupe ‘Blue Mountain Boys’ under the guidance of Beriwell Kondia, Nepalese songs under Girman Bahadur, Khasi artiste Philkin Lalu’s violin and Wallang’s songs, Assamese satria dance, two fitting Rabindrasangeet in Sukomol Das’s melodious voice, songs of unity composed in some of the main dialects of Assam under the leadership of Bulu Bordoloi, all of these created the right ambience first. Bhupen Hazarika sang ‘Sagarsangame’ in Bengali and Assamese. But what moved the audience the most was the song based on the dialogues of Haradhon and Rongmon. Bhupen and I had composed this song for this particular occasion - about the painful queries of the Bengali peasant Haradhon who has lost everything and the assurances of the compassionate Assamese peasant Rongmon. Just as Bhupen’s sensitive and mellifluous voice resonated with the sorrows of Haradon, perhaps the meandering strains of Bhatiali in my voice too echoed Haradhon’s grief.
