What a killer story of you getting into the magic castle thanks to Dai Vernon. Thank you for sharing with us.
I met Dai Vernon on several occasions, and each of them had a profound effect on me. Without going into all the details, he was personally responsible for my taking the "leap of faith" that was necessary for me to give up my relatively stable job as a musician and go into magic as a full time profession. He and Lou Derman were appearing at the TAOM convention in Abilene, TX in 1972, and BOTH of them cornered me in the hallway and said, "You MUST go into magic. You are a natural." I replied that if I were a natural, it was because I'd worked a live mike for the past 10 years. Both of them said, "That's what it takes. Experience."
I've never regretted the move.
Shawn, One thing I think you don't hear or might not even realize is to my generator you are our Vernon. A master of their craft and an inspiration. Thanks for what you do.

What's an amazing story... I love dai Vernon... There's a video of him doing cups and ball... He was just amazing even his old age... His books are hard to beat... Your still my favourite magician though... Still can't figure out signed card in a sealed deck... One of the best tricks ever

I’m too young to have a Dai Vernon story, in fact, by the time I heard of him for the first time, it was already over a decade since he’d passed. Regardless, his material was some of the first I’d learned, when I first started magic. I’m not gonna lie, your story about meeting him at the Magic Castle, is very enviable.

Great story!! I was lucky enough as a boy to sit at the head table at the Desert Magic Seminar in 82 with Dai Vernon , Jimmy Grippo and Tony Slydini. They were all competing to see who could show me the best trick I sat there for about three hours in total wonderment and absorb it all just like a sponge. We have had blessed lives in magic. And I remember seeing Vernon at the magic castle in 1983 when I went for the Sunday brunch. I have some other stories about the professor I will tell you but I will keep those private. Keep up the great videos old friend.

Great story. Good impression. Fabulous trick! The only trick I ever purchased in a magic store was the torn and restored newspaper trick. I worked and worked at it but never did it well which ended my magic dreams. Still love to watch all the greats.Never get tired of it.

What a wonderful story, Shawn. I could listen to stories about The Professor all day. One book I would highly recommend is "The Magician and The Cardsharp." It's Vernon's life story, but it's told under the backdrop of his and Charlie Miller's search for the man who rumor had it could perform a center deal (later known to be Allen Kennedy). It's a wonderful, well-written book that anyone would love, but magicians will appreciate it even more.

That was absolutely fascinating. As an outsider, I learned a few things from this video. One of the most important things I learned is that a magicians life is difficult and filled with sacrifice. Every time people see a trick or a move they want to know how it's done, but never the sacrifice of how many hours were spent perfecting it, or the roads traveled in discovering it.
Thanks so much for this story. I loved it so much. Now I have to Google about Houdini and Dai Vernon.

Hey Shawn- Great video about The Professor. I had a similar experience the week after I auditioned for The Castle. (He was on the committee that gave me the green light...) About a month later, I was at the bar practicing my dice stacking before the club opened and he came up to me and offered a few suggestions. Over the next 2 weeks, he would come in a little early and sit with me giving me feedback about my dice and a few other things. I was also luck enough to get from him a "Well... it isn't shit." Thanks for the wonderful stories.

@@ShawnFarquhar I was in BC by then All I remember was being on stage holding a hanky with maybe 20 bucks wrapped up in it. and the Magician with a "sword" next to my neck can even remember the "Payout" on that one just that I have always loved the stage
