Tim Coleman loves his logs. When we first learn to ride a dirt bike, logs are just an inconvenient obstacle that we bump, push or crash across. But once you learn a few log hopping techniques, logs become a very addictive playground of possibilities. The owner of this property kindly slapped together these logs for Tim's training weekend, and Tim Coleman was enjoying it to hilt. And of course this isn't just for the backyard, you can spot all sorts of possibilities in the forest too. Listen to Tim Coleman's engine and you can hear how little throttle or power he is using. Like so many aspects of dirt riding, when you have the right technique you often need less throttle, which means more chance of staying in control.

You also don't need speed. It's surprising how often inexperienced riders see a water crossing or log and automatically speed up, which only increases your chances of getting it wrong... and badly. Like the top extreme enduro riders (and Tim Coleman) say, if you want to learn to ride fast, first learn to ride slow. You can see how slowly Tim is hopping over these logs and staying in perfect control. Once you nail the technique, you can start speeding it up. Tim Coleman and I chatted about all the various ways you can get over a log, and there are almost countless ways to do it. Eventually I managed to boil these down to 10 major techniques so check them out if you want to develop a log obsession. As with so many aspects of enduro technique though, often you can only get to a certain point with teaching yourself. It's hard to see if you have the right body positioning, timing or if you are weighting the bike properly. And this is where a weekend with a dirt riding coach like Tim Coleman can make such a difference. You'll be a lumberjack before you know it.
