  • A WRAL investigation has now found that social services was called to the girl's elementary school back in December, after staff reported the girl had been brutally beaten. WRAL News is now pressing the county to explain why the girl wasn't taken from her grandmother at the first sign of abuse.
A Nash County grandmother accused of murdering her 8-year-old granddaughter earlier this week appeared in court for the first time on Thursday.
Patricia Ann Ricks, 72, of Nashville, North Carolina, is charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse. On Tuesday, the Nash Sheriff's Office says Ricks beat the Lane to death with multiple items in the home used as weapons in the abuse.
Granddaughter was left in custody despite recent reports of abuse
A WRAL investigation has now found that social services was called to the girl's elementary school back in December, after staff reported the girl had been brutally beaten. WRAL News is now pressing the county to explain why the girl wasn't taken from her grandmother at the first sign of abuse.
A staff member at Cooper's Elementary School says Christal Lane came to school beaten so badly she was almost unrecognizable. They say social services didn't protect Lane. The staff member said Lane claimed she had been beaten for refusing to put lotion on her skin.
Nash County Schools say DSS investigators came to campus the day of the report and were in contact with the school all week.
The district also says a caseworker was assigned who visited Lane and the school multiple times, with investigators discussing this case with administrators throughout the month of January. Through it all, Lane and her four siblings remained in their grandmother's custody.
WRAL News asked Nash County DSS for a copy of the complaint filed by the school. We also asked what they found in their investigation into the reported abuse, and why Lane and her siblings were allowed to remain in Ricks's custody after the school's report.
In a statement, the department says they're currently conducting their own investigation into this incident, and when that's complete, they may be able to share more information.
Ricks appears in court for the first time
Ricks was taken into the Nash County court in a wheelchair.
When a judge asked if she understood the charges against her, Ricks said yes. However, as the judge explained she could face the death penalty if convicted, Ricks seemed to zone out, not giving an answer when asked if she had an attorney or wanted a public defender.
The state is set to show their evidence against Ricks in court in two weeks.

Teacher if a child shows up badly beaten you call the police and an ambulance to take the child to the hospital, be treated and document injuries. The mandated reporter can take custody of an endangered child for whom the home is unsafe.

    • @kaya7396
      @kaya7396 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@dar7230 Parents SHOULD take responsibility for their kids, but abusive parents and guardians will ALWAYS exist, just like murderers and rapists will always exists. So if you choose to pursue a career that also requires you to be a mandated reporter for abused and neglected children, then you need to do exactly that. No one is requiring anyone to be a teacher, social worker, physician, healthcare worker, etc. So if you make the decision to join those careers, then you also accept that you are required by law to report anytime you suspect a child is being abused and neglected.
That is not expecting other people to be responsible for raising someone else's child. That is expecting the people in these professions to adhere to the legal requirements of the jobs they CHOSE to take. It is the parent/guardian's fault for abusing the child, but if it is not correctly reported and investigated by the people whose job it is to teach and provide care for these children, then that is their fault as well, and they should face the legal consequences of that. There is a reason we have these laws now because parents aren't going to report themselves for abusing their children. You're asking abusive parents to take responsibility for their kids, which is pretty stupid because if they were responsible, they wouldn't be abusing their kids in the first place. And I'm guessing you've never heard the phrase "it takes a village to raise a child."

Why is the grandmother guardian for the 8 year old and 4 other children?
There are millions of grandparents no longer necessarily equipped to parent their children's offspring, but when parent(s) get involved in drugs, find themselves in bad relationships, unable to provide for the children they have, either the parent(s) drop the kids off with grandparents, parent(s)l die of overdoses,and/ or social services takes children from an unsafe environment with parents, and look for a relative to place them with.
Maybe Grandma also treated her children brutally, perhaps taking on 5 children as she aged was too much of a burden, or she's developing dementia.
Think we're going to have wait for more details on her situation, but the real issue appears to land in the lap of Social Services, who ignored multiple red flags concerning the 8 year old.
Then again, think about this poor child next time legislators are considering hacking more money out of family support programs, public social service efforts intended to protect vulnerable children because people shouldn't expect "entitlement" programs to help them through challenging times.

If parents are in jail, they should be made to WORK to help pay for the upkeep of their neglected or abused children! ANYTHING they owned, cars, jewelry, house, guns, etc should be sold and all proceeds go to good care of helpless children! The courts decided years ago that it would be cheaper to put kids with relatives. Courts even let jailed abusive parents have a say to what relatives or friends can raise them. That is stupid idea, since often the other family and friends are also doing criminal lifestyles, are hard, uncaring criminals that keep the kids for money and the kids grow up in dangerous lifestyles, unloved, abused, neglected. They would be better off in adopted homes or in small group homes with college educated social workers, or child psychology caregivers, far away from neighbor"hoods" and bad influencers. Parents who abuse or neglect kids should lose all further contact and custody rights forever. No welfare checks or housing...put that money in kids childhood years, not paying for cons who are scamming and living crime and drug lifestyles.
