  • Marc and Morgan from wholelattelove.com review and compare two budget grinders from Cuisinart. The CBM18 and the Cuisinart Supreme Grind. Both grinders feature 18 grind settings and flat ceramic burrs - a real step-up from blade grinders which hack coffee up into random size bits.

    I have the Supreme Grind model, that I got using Sears Points, for $18.99 I've had it for at least 7 years, and it's still going strong. I just use it for regular medium grind coffee, so it works for what I need it for. I find the sound at the end if you run out of beans to be like a tornado siren :) Yes, even grinding the beans it's loud, but for what I paid, I can care less how loud it is. It's been a great machine.

    Thanks guys! I was given the Supreme Grind and use it daily, but am not overly thrilled. Not fine enough for an espresso, but ok for a pour over. And yet, I notice the grind is often uneven. AND the noise is horrific. What I wasn't sure about was the grinder. Knowing it's flat explains a lot.

    Lol! I own both of these grinders in my collection. I love Marc's comment about the DBM-8 sounding like a vacuum cleaner! So true! I likened it to a jet engine during take off but vacuum cleaner about sums it up. The CBM-18 conical grinder is great for making cold brew due to the very coarse grind it offers. It's so coarse in fact, that I set it at #15 when making it in my 12 cup French press pot. As always, love your reviews, especially because you also cover the low end machines as well as the higher, more expensive models. Thanks!

    I have the supreme and it does stop once it grinds the allotted cups you push the lever to. I love mine, however one annoying thing is that it produces a lot of static, so that once you open the hopper coffee particles starts flying everywhere. But a great coffee grinder in my opinion. i do not do espresso, but mine produces quite the fine grind. The cup lever does need to be set to off when not using otherwise i found that the body to be warm - i suppose from internal electrical being in "on" position.

    • @Wholelattelovepage

      Hi David, Thanks for sharing your opinions. Always great to hear from end user like yourself. There's an old trick if you're having excessive static - I even use it on professional espresso focused grinders. Just stir your beans in the hopper with a damp finger! Usually makes a huge difference in static.

So, for press we advise a medium to coarse grind and full on coarse for cold brewing. Try a setting and then adjust the grind a little to correct flavor to your liking. Here's a video on grind size which includes information on how grind size adjustments affects flavor. Hope it helps you out!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alexei Karam Hi Alexi, Producing good shots in a non-pressurized basket is all about the grind. For minimum cost we recommend the Breville Dose Control Pro: www.wholelattelove.com/products/breville-bcg600sil-dose-control-pro-grinder
      Scroll down the linked page for videos comparing it to less and more expensive grinders. The Breville has good performance for the price and grinds right into your PF. The trade-off is it's not as solidly built as some more expensive grinders and has a less powerful motor. Keep that in mind if you tend to brew with dark oily beans or do more than a few shots everyday. A step-up from the Brevilles are grinders like the Gaggia MDF or Rancilio Rocky. They have more powerful motors and larger burrs. For truly high-end grinding for prosumer level espresso machines a lot of people consider the Baratza Vario as the entry level grinder. Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any more questions
