This is mindblowing and I would/could never have figured this out. Thank you so much and I cannot wait to try it out. I wasted a whole load of time casting on and trying to knit 9 stitches in the round on DPNs because the pattern just wasn't clear on how to do this. I feel like I can now go back with renewed enthusiasm and knowledge to finish my project. I'll add to my comment once I have successfully completed the magic loop.
Thank you, Kristin! I keep seeing patterns with "magic loop method" and this explains it so well without "rushing" the process so I can see exactly what is happening. I might actually be brave enough to try a project with magic loop now.
I thought I would never learn the Magic Loop. I watched half a dozen videos and even took a class. Your video was the only one that made sense to me. Thank you for making it easy to learn!
Thank you for showing this. I am actually follow the instructions. The stages are clear both verbally and in the video. I will still be coming back as I try to knit in the round, I am sure.
I was doing washcloths for so long because I was scared to try this method. Watching your video, I got it on the first go and sat there admiring the cuff lol. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this!
Thank you so much for this video, I’ve watched so many tutorials on how to do magic loop and I never managed to understand it and get the hang of it, but the video you made is so clear and easy to understand that I finally managed to do it successfully! You’re such a good teacher and I’m glad I came across your video 😊
Thanks, Kristin,I have watched other videos of knitting in the round and I wanted to learn how to do it without having a full set of loops and how to do it with just a few stitches the way you do it in this video. I almost had it but somehow got my yarn all twisted but I will try it again. You did a great job teaching this and will let you know when I get the hang of it. I want to knit my great-niece a pair of booties for her first child that will make me a great-great-aunt, something she will have to keep and maybe hand down on through her family to always remind her of the deep love I have for her and her child and maybe more children
I'm so glad. It is a wonderful knitting technique to know and use when the time is right! I'm so glad my video helped you. There is a blog post with step by step instructions and photo tutorial that you may like, too. It is linked in the video description, and also here for your convenience: www.kristinomdahl.com/2020/07/31/beginners-guide-magic-loop-knitting-in-the-round/
Wow ! Your directions are so clear. I’m just learning to knit but this seems like this would be a bit of a pain to do. Any of you experienced knitter have a reason I should try an master the method 😁
Best video I have come across....you knit exactly like me....I have found so many videos they are so different than working on straight needles. If that at all makes sense lol...ty
I'm so glad!! There is a link in the video description to a blog post I wrote to accompany the video with step by step instructions and photo tutorial, too. Welcome to my channel!!
Hi Kristin, I am a crocheter who has decided to learn to knit because I want to knit WARM SOCKS! I am a beginner but I understood everything you did perfectly, unlike some other vids. And, how fun that you look so exactly like your name, a gorgeous American of Norwegian heritage! (even though I knkow that has nothing to do with how well you teach.)
That's amazing. You make it look easy. I'd like to try to try to do this, as I've recently heard about it & also just learned the technique of the magic loop or ring in crochet.
Hi Kristin! Thanks so much for your remarkable tutorial!!! It's by far the best tutorial I've seen. I'm going to delete all the other ones I saved for demo.... No matter how many times I've watched them, I simply get all tangled up and frustrated... Your instructions are so easy to understand, and following you as you demonstrate has a 100% success rate - you just can't go wrong❤
Thank you , thank you, thank you Kristin! I accidentally agreed to do a sock test knit and I’ve never knit a sock or used the magic loop method!!! 😳😂😂😂
Hello, do you happen to have a magic loop video for knitting a hat from the top down where you start with 4 stitches and increase as you work your way out and down the hat? Thank you.
Kristin, I'm stuck! How do you achieve the garter stitch when working in the round? I purl on the right side, and the back turns out in knit stitches and v.v. Hence, I end up with stockinette stitching!!!
You need to move your yarn to the front of your work before purling for second round to work garter stitch in the round. Garter stitch in the round alternates rounds of knit and purl. Are you subscribed to my channel? I’ll try to make a new video for garter stitch specifically in this technique soon.
@KristinOmdahl You're absolutely amazing! Firstly, thanks so much for responding so promptly, and secondly, for offering to make a video specifically for the garter stitch in the round. I only discovered your channel today, and it's my pleasure to become your new subscriber!!! I really appreciate your consideration in aiding us to grasp this 'complicated' method ❤️
It isn't hard once you get the hang of it. The advantage is being able to work in the round even if you don't have the exact size cord necessary for the circumference of the pattern you are knitting.
The only thing I would add to the tutorial is a verbal warning to make sure the stitches aren’t twisted at the beginning when you are about to start knitting 👍
Hurrah! Got it! It's about how you turn the work. I found that if I turned it level and to the right not only did the work not twist, but the working yarn stayed in place and That's all it took to get me to the next stage! None of the tutorials mention this. It's important to show how the work is turned! this makes all the difference! Thank you for your support Kristin!
I have tried several times to learn this technique. I understand in my mind but it doesn't work. The ladders between each half of the stitches are stretched far. What am I doing wrong?
Great instructional video, however, other than knitting with a long circular needle when you don't have the correct length, what is the point of magic loop knitting? I honestly don't get it. Thanks.
The magic loop technique eliminates the need of multiple double pointed needles to knit articles in the round, such as socks, mittens, pullover sweaters, etc. Using multiple double pointed needles was the only way to knit in the round before circular needles were invented.
I have never used a circular needle before. I have completed my baby cardigan and now have to add the border and button holes by picking up 166 stitches around the whole garment. Help!
In this example the circular knitting needle cord length is 40 in. Please follow the link to the comprehensive guide with this answer and so many other helpful tips: www.kristinomdahl.com/whats-new/beginners-guide-magic-loop-knitting-in-the-round
I have completed a baby cardigan. The border and button holes have to be created using a circular needle by picking up and knitting all the stitches around the garment 166 stitches in total. I have never done a border in this way. HELP!
I picked up the round needles today for the first time (I usually crochet and want to learn a new skill). YOU ARE TOO FAST and assume everyone already knows how to cast on, cast off, and even how to make a dang slip knot. Remember, BEGINNING means BEGINNING!!!
Thanks for sharing your opinion. Did you click on the link in the video description to the step by step photo tutorial on my website? It is very helpful, too.

You could add a stitch marker to remind you when the beginning of the round begins.

I get it but why does the cable need to be so long? Seems it would be easier with a cable half that length 🤷♀️
Still struggling !!!
I found slowing it to 0.75 speed (and a few repeats of tricky sections) helpful!
Mine looks awful 😭
Makes sense but what a lot of faff I'm sticking to straight Needles less faff more knitting must be an American invention surely...
I always say, there is no wrong way to be creative, as long as you like your results! More power to you :)
