  • Macaulay Culkin got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last week. Among those present, was his on-screen mother from Home Alone, Catherine O'Hara, who gave a breathtakingly emotional speech which moved Culkin to tears. But what can their body language, facial expressions and word choice teach us about how we experience and perceive REAL emotions? Find out now!

    Fantastic breakdown of years of joy! One question: you explained why the fourth reason (achievement) makes sense, but only explained the “what” rather than the “why” for the other 3. I assume that’s because it’s not yet known for sure, but do you have theories for those that you’d be willing to share? (Feel free to add tons of qualifiers to remain honest ;) )

    • @TheBehavioralArts
      @TheBehavioralArts  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +49

      Terrific question! It is very confusing and counter intuitive so I don’t talk about the why because there is no definitive answer but there is a theory that has been put forth by researchers that I really like. The theory is that the body is trying to balance out the insanely fast spike of emotional high. Our limbic brain doesn’t like random highs or lows, it’s confusing to it. So when this extreme positivity happens it’s like a see saw suddenly tipping to one side so the body tries to balance that out by giving it a counterweight. Apparently this is also the reason we show anger in the face of extreme cuteness and say things like “I just want to eat you up” or “I’m just going to smother you!” Some people even have aggressive thoughts when they see something really really cute. And the theory is it’s just balance.

    It seems like she has been waiting years to find the right moment to express her support and momma bear protection for this young man who went through a LOT of crap after Home Alone. She is such a famous actress and has had multiple chances to be in the sun. It feels like she is saying "All you jerks were wrong to mess with my kid. He was the star not me." It was great to see her do that. That is truly heartfelt.

    Catherine's speech was so well thought out as it not once took attention away from Macaulay. It was always about him. Also it must have been nerve wrecking for her coz even though you can clearly see they have a very effortless genuine mother child relationship going on she is not actually his mother. It must have taken a lot to show up for him knowing you are filling the shoes of his bio parents on his big day and how much it would mean to him.

    When she talked about the scene where she and Macaulay were near the attic and she challenged him to see if he would be sad if his family disappeared ... that was SUCH a hard scene to watch! I KNOW it is a movie. I KNOW it was a script. I KNOW it was just a character. It was just such a heartbreaking moment; it was like he really was unloved and a nuisance to the whole family, especially after all of the belittling and teasing he had already been through. And SHE shared how hard it was for her to do that scene. That was the most tender and loving moment in her speech, IMO. You can tell how much she did, and still does, care for him. Even watching it here again, just ..... 😭

I am so fond of him for that reason, and to see him have his moment like this, after all the real life obstacles he had to face growing up in Hollywood, it just brings me joy and pride. I’m going to leave this ‘thank you’ here because I’m not sure where else to put it! I wanted to say thank you for all the work you put into your videos throughout the year, for cultivating a space on this corner of the internet that is free from drama, diplomatic in times of disagreement in the comments, interesting, and fun to be a part of, and to thank you for always being so fair and kind in your analyses and to the supporters of your channel. As an ESL teacher, it’s important to me that part of my teaching method is to cultivate a love of learning and to do that, teachers must teach through patience, compassion and understanding, rather than how I was taught in school which was through fear. You, Spidey, are the definition of teaching through patience, compassion, and understanding, and boy oh boy is that especially hard to achieve online.
    We all go through some really difficult times in life, life can be so hard, and we all experience trauma and hardships during our time here, and I’ve thought for a long time that every morning, we all wake up and we can choose bitterness or we can choose compassion, I always strive to choose compassion, and I see so much of that here on your channel - it is the physical embodiment of thousands of subscribers waking up and choosing compassion over bitterness.
    Anyway, I can’t offer you much, but this small ‘thank you’ is a tiny extra something for Christmas as a token of my appreciation! Merry Christmas, Spidey! 🎄✨🎅🏻⭐️⛄️❄️🧑🏻‍🎄💫🎁🌟 sending you and your family peace, love, good health, and happiness now and in the New Year! ☮️

    I think the reason Katherine qualifies "you have brought that...sense of humor to everything you've done since Home Alone" is because not all his roles were comedic. I don't believe she was pulling back on the quality of his acting, but she doesn't want to downplay his skill as a dramatic actor. As close friends, she can see his strength of character, "his sweet, twisted, relatable sense of humor", regardless of the role.

    My first instinct was that Catherine qualified her statement about Macaulay bringing his own humor to all of his roles because she didn't want to speak for him - maybe it wasn't his intention, not for all of them at least. I've done theater and played mom to many kids over the years. Years later, I still keep tabs in them all. "My" youngest especially, since I played her mom in 2 different shows - first when she was 6 then 8. There was an issue for her family during in show and her lovely mom leaned on me for help, so we stay connected even today, 12 years later.
    I was a villian role with 2 kids who were the main leads once, but the big cast stressed these kids out, so the 3 of us had a little ritual to go sit in a quiet spot and just get ourselves ready to start the show. Once we were on stage, I was the bad guy, but off stage I was their anchor.
    You really bond with and grow to love these amazing, talented kids when you spend months performing with them.

    Spidy I want to speak to something. I'm 42, roughly the same age as Mckauley. I am a grown adult and have a child of my own. And I still shrink like a child to a mother or father figure. Especially in the face of recognition. It's just interesting that sometimes we really genuinely still feel like that little boy or little girl no matter how much time goes by.

      Question because I’m curious. Do you think when you revert back to the child in you, it’s because at that child age is when you wish you could’ve been given some recognition? As an adult when we get praise and revert back I think for me it’s because I feel for the little girl in me who could’ve really used that praise.

    I love how you explained the difference of showing genuine emotion in public, vs faking it. She feels it coming on, and she tries to surpress it, she tries to hide it, but it starts to take over. She takes a second to acknowledge it, to shake it off, and then she can move on. *So* *honest.* So real. You couldn't have picked a better example to juxtapose along side it, too.
    I've learned a lot in studying body language, but what has always helped me intuitively, is how I feel watching things. This video made me feel real emotions. Spidey, your comment about your relationship with deception really spoke to me. I have been a … professional manipulator of people my whole life: I paid college tuition with pro poker, became a sales leader and coach, and my biggest passion to learn and teach is behavior & body language. Much of my life is based around the concepts that are so well explained on this channel, the Behavior Panel, and others.
    That has caused me many difficulties in life. The closer someone gets to me, the more they know my ability to manipulate. Here’s the thing: I hate lying! The better I learn about it, the more I hate it. I constantly qualify my own statement to avoid even slightly deceiving, and point out when others do it. But the knowledge and ability makes people question whether they can trust me. I’ve always been accused of lying and manipulating when I’m not.
    I love studying this stuff! And when it’s moral (mentalism, ethical sales, just reading people in your life), I love using it! But I wish that didn’t open the door for distrust.

      Haha I can relate to this 10000% I’ve always felt like because I use my “deception credits” professionally I have none left in personal life so I’m honest to a fault to balance out the deception on stage. I would imagine it’s the same for you. You don’t bring your work home 😂

    Spidey, is it possible that she's making that gesture because she's trying not to get sidetracked while telling a story? I sometimes I notice I do that when I tell a story and I catch myself starting to get sidetracked and I make that gesture as a way to say "but it's not important right now for the main plot" and I try to keep going with the main story.

  • @CJWMTownsend
    @CJWMTownsend 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    Just watched the first few minutes and I think She might know some sign language. Those first couple "throw away" gestures are basically a shortened version of signs that can sneak out as gestures. The first she is using her hand to encompass all of us which goes along with what she is saying and the second one she is motioning that the boys went away, the hands moved more quick and to the side. Very similar but they have a different feel plus context plays a part.

I have two sons, and each time I witnessed their birth I cried. I think that's a combination of all four emotions or actions he described when it came to tears. Just an observation I made on "tears of joy".

    The speach about the boys in theatre getting up, showing ohara placing culkin on higher level can also be attributed to ohara as a real mother who places their children on a higher plateau in real life and doing the same for culkin.
