You are by far the best reviewer I've ever seen. Love the passion and how in-depth you go on every aspect of the game, especially the themes and characters. And actually, the pixel remaster of FF VI came out few days ago, and your passionate review has prompted me to buy it and play the game again after many many years, so thank you.

Gau: Not sure what to say, but he ends up still loving his father, despite that happened....
    Shadow: Learns what love is
Setzer: Love of a best friend
    Mog: Love of friends

Wow. Just... wow. I literally just finished the game a few minutes ago and.... wow. That has got to be one of the most cohesive works of fiction I've ever seen. The gameplay, setting, characters, backstories, current sidequests, the epilogue, they all work together to weave an adventure both grand in scope and yet tight and focused on the characters at all times. There are flaws in it, don't mistake. But other than one flaw that I would say is significant, everything else feels like nit-picking. In case you're curious, I feel like the way Shadow went out was in contradiction to his character arc and was an unfortunate mark on what was otherwise a masterful ending. Other than that, the closest thing to a negative I can come up with is the inclusion of filler characters in the latter half of the game. The lack of characterization in Gogo, Umero, and in some cases Mog really stick out in comparison to everyone else.
Something I noticed from the beginning of the game was that it didn't follow the same basic structure of the games that came previous to it. No crystals, no prophecy of four heroes.. you get the idea. Instead, the characters were just people living out their lives doing the best they could with what they had. The villains didn't beat them at every turn, nor did the heroes win every conflict they participated in. And this grounded conflict took place in a world that felt real.
We as gamers often talk about what game world we would want to live in as a form of fantasy. We wouldn't necessarily enjoy it long-term but it's fun to think about the concept. As I was playing this game, it occurred to me. This wasn't a world that I fantasized about living in and my reason for this functioned as the shadow of my whole playthrough. The reason I didn't fantasize about living in that world was because I felt like I already did. The world didn't feel like a playground where I could do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted, nor did it feel like a minefield where I had to watch every step I took for fear of everything blowing up in my face. It felt like home. Surrounded by friends, facing challenges that look like are impossible to overcome, and choosing to either give in to the crushing weight of the world or to dream of a better tomorrow. I will never forget the feeling I had as I walked through Narshe after Kefka tore the planet apart. Here was the first place my journey had brought me, and everything looked alright, except it wasn't. The lack of npcs in the area made every step I took feel heavy. The depressing atmosphere was palpable. And yet, I will also never forget my reaction to the music that played in the overworld as I started to regroup the party and eventually get the airship. The hope that provided was like a breath of fresh air. My single greatest regret for this game is that we don't have an earthbound style ending where we would get the opportunity to travel around the world we saved to see where it would go from there.
It's easy to see why this game is constantly put up as one of the greatest games ever made. I have never seen such detailed characters in a game before, nor has the theme of a game ever felt so grounded and real. I'm almost surprised that this game is a Final Fantasy. As good as the past 5 games have been, they haven't even come close to this game, and I highly doubt the rest of them will.
Even though I didn't like the map, or the way the airship drove, or some of the characters added at the end of the game, honestly, I can't wait to get lost in this world again. Definitely one of, if not the, greatest games ever made.

I just stumbled across this video and 30 min in I'm already so hooked. This is a degree of passion and thought about my first and favorite fantasy world that I always wanted to hear about or discuss. This is the story and characters I love. I think I will listen to this closely over a few sittings and write up my thoughts and responses. I realize this is an old video but at the least it warrants further discussion after all the effort poured into it!

An interesting scene that I can imagine happening off screen in this story: Kefka rotting in jail, furious that Gestahl has betrayed him, while Gestahl manipulates the party to go deal with the raging Espers. Then when the party has left, Gestahl goes and releases Kefka, explaining that his imprisonment was part of the plan, and now he's to follow at a discreet distance behind the heroes so he can snatch defeat from the jaws of their victory. Gestahl couldn't tell Kefka the plan beforehand, because unlike Gestahl with his fifty ranks in Deception skill, Kefka isn't a good enough actor to appear legitimately defeated and contained during Gestahl's dinner with the heroes. But the fact that he was "betrayed" by Gestahl in this moment is ultimately the reason Kefka stopped having the same loyalty to Gestahl that Celes once had, and Leo still had at this moment. I think it was during this night or two behind bars that Kefka decided to eventually kill Gestahl; before that, Kefka had a tiny spark of humanity or love or the like left in him, and this incident is when it died.

I'm eight years late to the party but I have to comment.. Phenomenal video. VI changed my life, VI is my favorite game of all time. It's the first game that ever made me cry on many occasions. Rachel & Locke, Gau and his father, Celes attempting suicide, the list goes on. To top it off, every time I hear Forever Rachel I swell up, the entire scene I see in my mind, the dialogue.. Everything. I could go on an maybe what I gotta do myself is start my own channel and just make my own FF VI video. One point I'd explore is Kefka and his philosophy and how it's based on the Neitzscheian concept of nihilism and whether or not he is a "villain" because Kefka is so far beyond good and evil, at least to me. Even his name, Kefka is derived from Franz Kafka who wrote Metamorphisis which is the title of the song that plays when Floating Contintent emerges. I'd also tie in how I feel that FF XII is either a sequel or prequel to VI because I remember first time playing XII and I went to Burjerba, I was like "HOLY SHIT THIS IS THE FLOATING CONTINENT" and then you have Hell Wyrm, Yiazmat who I feel can easily be related to Atma Weapon.. Yeah, this video has definitely inspired me. The level of love and care and detail and emotion is genuinely moving and I did well up a few times during this video so you are not alone. I will absolutely be watching all your Final Fantasy content.. I also saw some Star Trek related stuff so yeah, I am totally subbed and look forward to diving into this channel. However as it stands now it's 243 am and I been running all day on three and a half hours of sleep. Oh one last thing about VI.. Celes is my first video game crush. I love her so much so that in many RPGs I play I use the name Celes/ Celes Chere/ Serisu and Serisu Sheru.. I'm the darkness and she is my star light.

@14:50 Which is the exact reason why you couldn’t warp to different bonfires til the halfway point in the first Dark Souls. That and also because FromSoftware and designed one of the most complexly simple, intricate, and interconnected world in gaming history. If you could just warp everywhere wouldn’t have gotten to experience kicking down a ladder under a bridge creating a shortcut and a way to bypass a dragon. Or the feeling of stepping onto an elevator, reaching the bottom to realize you back at Firelink Shrine and didn’t even notice that the Undead Chapel was literally right above Firelink.
With a warp mechanics right at the very beginning of the game there wouldn’t have been as much tension when exploring the world. When you start going of the beaten path and have absolutely no reference of where you are, no idea what kinds of enemies are gonna fuck your day up or where they’re at. And God forbid you accidentally rolled off a cliff and lost 200 Thousand souls when fighting a trash mob of enemies, when all you wanted to do was see what was just around the riverbed.
Dark Souls 1 wouldn’t have been Dark Souls 1(literally and figuratively) if you were allowed. to warp immediately.

Celes suicide was by far the most tear-jerking, traumatizing, and beautiful scenes in the history of gaming. Especially with that music playing, the background fading to black as she plummets to her death, tears in the wind... god now i'm too getting tears thinking about it.
Not to mention a brassy move by the developers to include a main character committing suicide, which is very dark subject matter

You're right I never found a convenient place to mention that. The theory was that to create difficult bosses, as they were capable of doing, would restrict the number of players who would be able to finish the game and experience the content. Thus, Optionals and Super Optionals were invented to give players who wanted the challenge a challenge, but still allow other players the availability to beat the game.

When I saw the thumbnail for this video - FF VI, 3hrs and DAT FACE (I don't know how these pics at youtube get chosen, but it is awesomely appropriate) - I knew I'd need to reserve an afternoon to sit through and try comprehend that. And I must say that it was worth it. Thank you.
In regards to lessening the challenge of the final stretch: I like to think that hardcore fighting takes the backseat in the face of the emotional climax and the conclusion of characters' arcs.

What a great dive into what makes this game so special! FF6 is indeed the greatest game in the series, and one of the greatest games ever made. It made a huge impression on me when I played it way back in 1994.
I just wanted to add a little extra observation about Terra, Celes and Locke, and how FF6 was so great at handling characters in an interesting and respectful way almost 30 years ago. It certainly appears at first as though these three characters may end up in a love triangle, but they wisely avoid that in a very organic way. Terra and Celes both bond and form a friendship over their shared trauma at the hands of the Empire, and Terra discovers motherly love (as you so eloquently say in the video) for the children of Mobliz instead of romantic love, leaving Celes and Locke to end up together. In lesser hands it could have devolved into two girls fighting for the affections of Locke, but thankfully it did not. I wonder if they took some inspiration from this relationship in how they fleshed out and handled the relationship between Cloud, Aerith and Tifa in FF7R? Because that did a very similar thing, in which we are led to wonder whether these three may end up in a love triangle, but instead Tifa and Aerith form a bond just as Terra and Celes did, leading to a far more interesting character growth for them all.
Thanks for the impassioned look at this timeless classic!

    • @quicksilvertongue3248
      @quicksilvertongue3248 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Man, the game literally only has two adult women in the cast (other than maybe Gogo, since we have no idea what s/he has under those robes). What a waste it would be if both of them were after the same guy. Personally, as someone who likes to imagine all my favorite characters are getting laid, I would definitely have Terra pair up with either Edgar or Sabin (possibly alternating between them, I'm sure they'd be cool about that), while my female headcanon version of Gogo would help Setzer learn to love himself again (by mimicking him, haha, get it?), and Relm would grow up to pair off with Gau. That just leaves old man Strago, endlessly faithful widower Cyan, the possibly dead Shadow, and technically Mog and Umaro not getting any.

More than love, for me, the theme for the first half of the game is Trust.
Terra has to learn to trust the Returners, the Espers must learn to trust the humans again.
The second half of the game, the theme changes to that of Hope.
Hope that the world can overcome what has been done. Terra loses hope and never truly fully recovers her feelings of hope until she decides that the world is worth saving.

Archengeia first off I want to say that I love your review of this game. This is how a Video Game review should be done, with passion and emotion. The story of Final Fantasy 6 is a story that must be told, that needs to be told. It is a story of despair as well as a story of hope, as well as with the message of you are not alone. Final Fantasy 6 needs to be made into a movie or at the very least into a novel; and of course their needs to be a remake of the game on today's newer Consoles.

yeah currently working on that myself. It isn't 100% possible to not level up because of 3 instances 1 of which being optional but you wouldn't get all the characters back if you skip. Escape from Vector you have to fight the battles on the minecrart, battle with the IAF before floating continent, and the 2 battles with paintings in owzers house (if you want to get Relm and Strago back)

Lorerunner - I am so thankful that there is a person in the world who can do a review of this game that begins to do it justice. The literary value of this game far surpases any other video game. The quality of the story telling and the masterful weaving together of themes in this game puts it head in on par with the truly great moments in literature: Dostoyevsky's Karamazov, Dante's Divine Comedy, Homer's Illiad & Odyssey, Sophocles's Oedipus - This game is in league with those rare moments in human history when a story captures something of the struggle for understanding the purpose of life with stunning perceptiveness and acuity. I think that this game ought to be a required part of the K-12 curriculum for that reason.
    .
That said I think I have a different perspective on the theme of this game than you do. I actually don't think that the theme is love. Kefka actually wins in this game. He destroys the world, and he wins the argument at the end. In the end, all the protagonists have to show for themselves is sentimentality - and Kefka duely exposes this when he says "You sound like chapters of a self-help booklet". Kefka speaks for all humanity here, in that the person searching for Truth cannot accept pat answers to things, regardless of how they might feel - the person searching for Truth needs something more - something infinite and transcendent. Kefka is just perhaps the most human person in this game in that he is truly searching for a reason to live - and finds all the reasons that the world gives him lacking. Kefka represents the greatest in all of us - he represents the one way in which mankind is infinite: desire. In short, Kefka represents mans search for God. And failing to find God, Kefka comes to the only reasonable conclusion left to him - destroy everything - for without God and the promise of something infinitely more than what we can comprehend, all life, with its inevitable suffering, is meaningless. Kefka takes it upon himself to do the one trutly ethical thing he can do - relieve existence of the burden of meaningless suffering and destroy all things - including himself.

Beautiful review. Love how passionate you are about this great game, especially your analysis of Kefka, which was chilling. Wanted to ask a few things... I've heard you mention Chrono Trigger a couple of times but couldn't find a review for it by you, did I miss it or is it coming? Also, mind telling us what's on this Zero List (think that's what you called it) on your iPod?

I have to say I was completely with you on the whole Locke and LockexCeles relationship. Once you get past the masks and understand just how damaged he was when he joined the Returners....his actions in the world of ruin completely work. After losing everything that many times you'd absolutely go after that one slim hope to get something back. I like the relationship because both have reasons to not jump in right away. Locke's past says enough. Celes and her history makes sense too. Great job.

That review was really enjoyable and it was visible that this is one of your favourite games (if not the most favourite for you). By the way there is no need to be embarrassed about crying while you were making this review as I believe that every fan of RPG played at least one game that made him cry and is dear for him or her. Now I'm curious what will you say about next games from Final Fantasy series. Good job and keep it up :)

Mentally casting who should play all the Cids if they made a Final Fantasy Cinematic Universe starting tomorrow. FF4 Cid is John Rhys-Davies; for FF6 Cid, I would have said David Warner if he'd hung on a little longer, but since he's not an option anymore, Celes's "Grandpa" Cid should be Charles Dance, because he's basically the last of this category of actors we still have left (Patrick Stewart would also work, except he's busy with Star Trek Picard).

what i learned is that, you are a masochist who loves punishment and pain, but also who has quite the royal taste to admire this game!
first FF i ever finished was ps2 FF12. took me 9 years! as in real life!
FF6 GBA is my most favorite one that i never managed to finish, but i loved it more than any other game of FF. i loved the characters, story, magics, weapons, everything! maybe the only FF with pixel graphics that i actually love! as i grew up i prefer 3D models most of the time, if not all of it. but FF6 has its own place in my heart!

When you were first talking about how there really wasn't a main character, I was thinking what you eventually came to say, and I got a slight rush when you said it... that if anyone is the main character of ff6, it's prob kefka. I'm glad you waited to talk about him last.

Most any of the earlier FF games were all top notch role playing games. from 1 to 6 you can see the evolution of the game screen and gameplay. i highly reccomend them, cant speak till after 6 though. 6 was the last i played.

You mention that there were multiple tries to reach and even surpass the mixed bag that is Kefka as a game villain. Coud you please list some examples? Out of the games I've played (not that much, admittedly), I cannot remember a single character that could even be considered a step in the direction of your interpretation. Kirei from FSN? Maybe similar, but not that much. I'd really like to see other takes on the idea.

I love this review! I actually wish it could have been longer. Great stuff. This is my favorite game of all time too. I actually bought the GBA version on your suggestion. I liked most of the translation fixes but my heart sank when Kefka said "I'm going to create an empire of death" instead of "I'm going to create a monument to nonexistence". That line really suck with me over the years. I've watched your other reviews on this and I would also be willing to pay $100 bucks for a revamped version of this game with better graphics. Oh well, I'm sure one day it'll happen.
