    Break and Stick Out are genuinely two of the best EPs I've ever heard from a 4th gen girl group. It surprised me how much NMIXX fits hiphop concepts, but it suits them so well. Both mini albums also showcase a variety of genres and sounds, with great production and interesting lyrics, while also highlighting the members' great vocals as well as rap skills. Both EPs also have a distinct theme and message that is cohesive, and both EPs in this series connect well. I love how these two EPs also feature MIXXPOP songs as bsides, like BOOM (a standout track from Break imo). NMIXX is truly for the weird girls. They're not for everybody, and that's part of the many reasons as to what makes them so special and unique

    I noticed the wordplay from the first listening as S-Class by stray kids also uses this word as chorus and they talked about double meaning behind it a lot .
    Also I think that Nmixx are also doing additional wordplay in chorus, when they sing "We go up higher and higher" which is korean lyrics is "우린 we, we, we, we, 위로 위로 더" and to me "위로 더" sounds like "weirdo"
    Just wanted to share thoughts

      Speaking of which, I think NMIXX is following a similar path as SKZ. Remember in their early years SKZ music was different to your average kpop song. Many people didn't comprehend their musical direction and people called their music "noise music" and also called them "JYP flops" bc their company and kpop fans had little hope for them. I could see a similar pattern with NMIXX. Right now kpop fans are complaining that they're trash at doing mixxpop and they should change their style. I mean i get it with O.O but their songs after that improved and got better. I'm sure they will be more successful in the future. I mean they're only been around for two years. They got time.

  • @AnAdultKpopFan
    @AnAdultKpopFan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +151

    별 can also be short for 별로 which means "so-so" or "whatever" in Korean. So it has a double meaning. On one side, it's them reiterating that people often call them "so-so" or that they are "whatever", but on the flip end, it can also be mean star. So when they go "wow look at those weirdos/stars", they are implying that however way you view them, either so-so or stars, they don't care and will continue to be themselves.
    Edit: I also wanted to add that one of the last lines in the chorus is "그래, 난 별별별" which translates to "Indeed, I'm so-so/star" so again, it's NMIXX embracing that they are both strange, but stars.

    • @connectworld1HNN
      @connectworld1HNN 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      "별로" is not the case here, in my opinion as a native Korean speaker. Instead, it is most likely to be a reference to "별의 별" or "별별".
      "별의 별(別의 別)", or "별별(別別)" in short, is a common phrase in Korean that may be translated to "different in many ways", but more in a negative and sarcastic sense. It's commonly used with the word "인간(human)", derogatory in a sense compared to "사람(person/people)", like "별의 별 인간이 다 있네." meaning "there are a bunch of 별의 별 humans", or simply "there are a bunch of weirods." "별별별", the case for NMIXX's new track, is not a common way of using this phrase -- which confused me as well -- but I am pretty sure it aimed for this context. Just to let you know!

    I liked the album! Fe3O4: Break is still my favorite album from NMIXX but Stick Out is up there as well. My favorite songs are Red light sign but we go and Beat Beat 💖 See that is good but I kinda ruined it to myself by playing it too much while streaming the MV 😭🤦🏻‍♀️ I wonder how I would feel about it in 6 months or so. The mv, choreo, promo videos and photoshoots are great though - I could tell that from the get-go. Also, everyone looks so pretty and charismatic in the mv, I feel like this comeback can be a turning point for them in terms of how they present themselves

    I feel like the lesson JYPE took after Love Me Like This is that 90s rnb with naturalistic instrumentals is the right sound for NMIXX title tracks and I think it's pretty good but I don't think it 100% works.
    I think considering the weirdness angle gives a good reason for why. It's just not very weird to use natural drums. Red light sign, but we go has more of the griminess that I really love on O.O.

    Another Choujimi banger!
    I absolutely adore episodes where you talk about language in any capacity. I studied Japanese in high school and linguistics in college, but never Chinese or Korean specifically (although I did teach myself to read Hangul for practical reasons), so I'm always fascinated to learn about the nuances of language between the three. There is so much wordplay that goes right over my head.

  • @mianovek
    @mianovek 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

    No experience with hanja really, but your understanding on the wordplay going on is the same as mine. Also about the release and the album, I think it's a bit weaker than their previous project while also somewhat walking in its footsteps somehow? See That? really feels like an attempt at catching the magic of DASH while also changing up a couple of things. They definitely feel like releases that are paired together and it makes sense considering the success of DASH (still one of my favourite releases of this year).
    It took me a bit to really get it, but I've definitely reconciled with See That? and constantly find myself humming the song now so I think it succeeded in doing what it needed to do. As for the album though, it's really weak in my opinion. Red light sign, but we go is the only somewhat standout to me, which is really unfortunate considering how much I love their previous album. I'm just hoping the next album will wow me more cause I do want to support NMIXX!

    I looooove red light sign, but we go. Beautiful amazing song. Best song on the album. Sure it’s repetitive but it’s just so good! The horns or trumpets or whatever?! Yes! Also I love the thing JYP is doing in their songs lately like with Naeyon’s abcd where it ends on like the middle word of the chorus. So fun. The rest of the album… I’m mixed. Sickuhhh is kinda good if you can look past the slight cringe lol. BEAT BEAT is nice also but I don’t love how they borrowed the same very identifiable refrain word from Run for Roses. I see this album as them trying out some different sounds and I appreciate it for what it is.

    In Japanese, the word 違う (chigau) refers to the use of ‘different’ in this context, but 他の (hoka no) can refer to ‘different’ as in ‘others’ or being part of ‘the other’. There doesn’t seem to be much resemblance with the character presented with byeol/bia 🤔 let me update this comment after I check something
    Edit: the official translation used by JYP for the song is actually v interesting this regard ! You’re right - that Hanja is used most often in Japanese as 別 (betsu). Depending on the exact sentence, translation of it will vary, but the best way to see it is as ‘difference’, ‘distinction’. But JYP uses ‘可笑しいな人’ (okashii na hito), probably because it has less positive connotations more aligned with the connotations of ‘weirdo’. Like in English though, the wordplay gets kinda lost in translation as byeol meaning ‘star’ is 星 (hoshi) in Japanese. I would love to know what the equivalent pun would be. I’ll have to keep looking 😤
    Edit 2: In English, the best translation might be ‘space cadet’ 😅 it would maybe sound awkward if sung but I’m coming at this purely from translation POV. It has the starry connotations while still being about a ‘weirdo’. It also has further implications about a person who technically pushes humanity forward, bringing new ideas to the world, etc. Japanese equivalent still kinda lost on me tho

    I definitely liked the album, but it is not Fe3O4: BREAK levels of almost perfect.
    See That was certainly a fun title track, the change up was both a bit too seamless and a bit too jarring. I think I saw Lily say it was inspired by Country, which on a hip-hop album is… a choice. It’s certainly weird (weird weird), maybe it’ll grow on me. The final prechorus? (the Ohhh-ooo-ohhh section) is definitely my favorite part though
    Some Bsides that Stick Out (heh) to me are certainly “Red Light Sign, But We Go”, “BEAT BEAT”, and “Love is Lonely”.
    Overall? Certainly a sequel, but is definitely not Shrek 2 levels of Sequel.

    At first I was really confused about the translation. I knew 별 as star, but as someone that study mandarin, I suspected something, but didn't get how star became weirdo. "年年" being "every year" when "年" is year seems logic, but with weirdo it wasn't at all. You just proved me that I will never have any level in mandarin by just studying it at school, but that's okay, I already knew it !
