My grandma passed away.. she made Traditional Hmong clothes.. she was just about to start teaching me to use her sewing machine, which is this specific model... this video helped so much and I hope I can carry on her legacy with learning to use this machine..
It's in your blood. Just take a couple lessons. It happened to me. My mother used to make wedding dresses. She died when I was 6. I'm 41 and I started sewing 4 years ago. So crazy. I only took 2 lessons and took off. I still can't believe what I do. Now I'm trying to upgrade my 1970s kenmore to a Juki. You can do it ❤

I am not a frequent sewer, when working on a project today I had to fill the bobbin and slip it back into the case. The tension was very tight and I could not figure out why. Following your video I was able to adjust the tension on the bobbin case and now I am back to work. Thanks so much, you saved me a trip into town (40 miles) which would have been my next step. My lingering question is why? Why would this happen in the middle of my work?
The bobbin case is considered a common wear and tear item and the main causes would be if the thread got stuck and pulled. This would cause the tensioning plate to bend out of shape. The thread lint that builds up under the tensioning plate can cause the tension to be too light so when you clean it, it will drastically add more tension since the lint is not holding the plate up anymore. Lots of issues but having a good quality bobbin case is always best. The price difference between a Made in China case and made in Japan case is not much so it's best not to get a cheap bobbin case. Current prices for Japan Bobbin Case $4-6.
@@ABCSewingMachine yes, I buy the bobbins sold by my Bernina dealer that are supposed to be made specifically for these machines. It has been awhile since my last cleaning so will schedule an appointment for that service. Speaking of service, I appreciate your videos and tips. Thank you!
Muchas Gracias tengo una máquina que me regalaron, y no se como ensartarla , vi tu vídeo y fue muy valioso para mi , un millón de Gracias, y Dios te bendiga, Saludes y muchas bendiciones,
I sewed on a Phaff machine for over 9 years at a commercial awing machine and they are threaded and the bobbin is done the same way. I am interested in a commercial/industrial machine they are more reliable then the ones for home use.
I bought a 1984 model DDL 555. I download an owners manual, but it was hard to see the illustrations and the Japanese to English translation was difficult to understand. There were a couple of threading differences, mostly the needle groove facing the left, and the thread insertion from left to right through the groove. Thank you.
Hi! So helpful! The light bulb went out and I can’t seem to find the replacement item online. Do you know where and light bulb model I can buy for ddl-5550, Japan version. Is it the same for china one too? TIA!
The light style depends on who assembled the machine. If you have a gooseneck lamp, then check to see if it plugs into the power(on/off switch box) or the back of a clutch motor. If it plugs into the on/off switch then you can go to your local hardware store and purchase a 110v light bulb (led or fluorescent). If it plugs into the back of clutch motor then you will need a 6.3v light bulb. Also there are many options for led lamps available now.
Hello, I would like to ask 2 questions: 1st. What is the thickest thread that I can use in this machine to sew fabric purses. 2nd, can this machine sew on vinyl and canvas? I mostly sew purses made of cotton fabric, but I would like to add some vinyl details on them, so I would like to know if this is the right machine for me. Thank you very much for your tutorial it is very clear and specific. Enjoy each of your days and stay safe.
The thickest that we have converted this machine for was leather using a T138 bonded nylon on needle thread and a T69 on bottom. Now when I say converted, this means hook (heavy, tension springs / tension adjustments, needle plate large, feed dog heavy, and some other fine tune adjustments. This machine can do it but I don't recommend it on a regular basis. I would recommend the DNU-1541S walking foot for your projects. Price is $1650 new w. USA made table, sturdy K leg stand, 750W Servo Motor for more power, needle positioner +$45. Great machine for leather work.
Because vinyl is sticky, this machine will not feed properly unless you use Teflon coated presser foots, Teflon plate, etc... it may work but will experience feeding issues. Again I recommend the DNU-1541S from Juki (Made in Japan)
@@ABCSewingMachine I've covered vinyl with a light tissue paper (like that which is used to wrap presents from the dollar store) and then tore it off after stitching. It solved the sticking issue for me.
Hi I have a question, I always have a problem putting in the bobbin case into the bobbin holder it’s too tight I struggle to get it in and out, is there away I can make the bobbin holder smaller or do I need to get it replaced or it’s the bobbin case
@@ABCSewingMachine Thank you so much for your reply. There was a cheap one online for $360 USD ;( getting closer. I would like to buy a used one opposed to new, in case I loose interest in the craft. It won't be such a great lost. Angel from The Bay
There are 2 subclasses for the single needles (Standard & Heavy). We carry only the DDL-5550N (Japan) as the price we offer this unit is close to the DDL-8700 (China). DDL-5550N (Made In Japan - Standard) DDL-5550NH (Make in Japan - Heavy) DDL-8700 (Made in China/Vietnam) DDL-8700H (Made in China/Vietnam - Heavy)
Obviously 1541s is recommended for leather work or equivalent. They are successors to the LU563. NH models of 5550, could these handle thinner/softer leathers? Say lamb nappa? Or 1mm horsehide? Because that would make them more versatile for those sticking to fabric work too
You might have damage on your needle bar. When you insert the needle into the bar there should be very little to no movement from side to side. If there is movement then the hole where the needle enters is too open causing the needle to move when you tighten the needle screw. Changing needle bar will fix this.
I wish you used a regular camera instead of a wide angle lense because you can’t see squat. (but you sure can see all the other stuff in the periphery like all the other machines in the whole room..). But I did not click on this video to see what is in the room..
