Straight up! My M52tu is on its last leg, 125 compression on all cylinders but 4 which is 3psi off. Car doesn't burn oil and still has power at 247,xxx miles but it's time to swap it and I figured a N55 swap would be the route. Unfortunately, there's next to no info on the swap. Its wild!!

And now, for business, I'm moving to California and my E46 wagon is mint and meant to last another 10 years, except it's not a missions compliant because that transmission does not match an engine package. As I thought about just getting rid of the car, which is super upsetting, I realized, oh I can just put in an n55 and then it would be emissions compliant because that transmission and engine package match seeing your video proves that they do, in fact, fit and giving the part number for the motor mount arms is the most important piece. Thank you so much for that information. If you do decide to do an 8 HP swap, the transmission cross member to fit in an E46 is a Z4 e46 chassis style that uses the six. HP transmission will bolt directly to the 8hp without any sort of modifications needed.

@@MrJamesshipman gotcha yes f series n55 would work if you can make all the modules happy. But I don’t see why your m54 wouldn’t pass smog. Unless the 8hp is causing a check engine light
@@Tec_KnowTech I called the bar/reff directly. So engines are "paired" with transmissions. Because it's measured in grams per mile, so changing the gears changes the emissions. 2 extra gears would make it cleaner. But that is not how carb views it. It's only a legal swamp, if the engine and transmission is on the same matching package that had to be offered in a vehicle made by the manufacturer. So 8-speed transmission from an F series. In essence is considered an engine swap. Now I can do a carb FTP 75 and then have it legally passed for smog, but that test will be seven and a half thousand dollars. N55, swap will be cheaper plus I'll gain an extra few horsepower. The story gets better I should add. I actually work in emissions, So I have all the testing equipment to do my own smog and I know I will pass smog, but because of the transmission, it's an instant fail. Is your Instagram, tecKnoWtech? I will definitely be contacting you because your information and experience would be immensely helpful. I used to work as a mechanic at a BMW performance shop. So I know how to splice things together that are not originally meant to fit. We can put N54 into an E30. I should be able to put an n55 into an E46. Same too, because everything on the E46 has been rebuilt. It's supposed to last me like another six to ten years.

Awesome build, the e46 diesel part is very interesting, along with the m3 ones. Gives me ideas for my e46 supercharged build. The only thing i dont get is your massive hot air intake going over the car into the void of the driver side. You should probably try to get the filter around the fog light area on the turbo side, or behind the headlight, with a tube coming from the fog light to the filter like ill do on the driver side. I wish i could install this 6 spd on my m54. They seem way less expensive than true 6 spd swap from an e46. 5spd to 6spd swap im probably looking at 2 thousand euros... but the 3.46 diff hits hard on the highway.
Thanks Lorri, I don’t recommend supercharging the M54 to anyone. It’s a heat soaking machine. Sadly, the gains are very minimal. We tried both turbo m54 and SC in the past and the n55 swap is by far the easiest to work on with no tight spaces.Everything is very accessible unlike the m54. Don’t get me wrong, the m54 is a great engine if left alone and is very capable, if built correctly. I will always love the m54 lol. We are well aware of the hot air intake. Eventually we will plumb it down by the fog light, although IATs are still below under boost. There’s still work to be done ☑️ along with a/c and heater lines. @@Tony-RS3 I know we can do it, it’s the cost 💲 that doesn’t make sense. Definitely more modifications & time and it’s not something a regular joe like us can just do in the garage. The n55 on the other hand can be done at home with most of the parts being plug and play and it being single turbo makes everything so much simpler and easy to work on 🔧. All we need is A/c function 😅

No, not at this time. The wiring can be complicated if done incorrectly, can possibly damage modules. I’m offering custom harness to locals in California only at this time, maybe in the future we will expand…. Although there’s another company in Portugal 🇵🇹 that’s making harness kits for n54/n52. The video speaks for itself 🫡! No expensive aftermarket engine/transmission mounts or driveshafts & the car drives like factory which is what we wanted. We found it very easy to fit one of these engines into a e46 chassis. It’s a simple engine being that it’s single turbo with no clutter. Anyone that’s mechanically inclined can install one in a few days.

@@aombarbor I think it was 134k on this engine. Typically you do not want to see any wear. These look like the first layer of the bearings material was starting to show. I always recommend them whenever someone come in for an oil pan gasket replacement. Just for peace of mind!

That would be cool! Unfortunately that engine requires more fabrication, time and money. This is why we picked the n55 mainly for it’s simplicity.

Just thinking out loud, a top mount turbo kit would solve the need to trim the engine mount wouldn’t it?

rod bearings spun happens bacause of electrical oil valve,i locked it 30 times on n55 engines, let me know if you need info
