      Any snow that sits for a few days, through multiple freeze/thaw cycles, can turn into a sheet of ice. At high speed, this compact snow or ice sheet can lift off from the roof and put a hole in the windshield of the car behind you!

    my tip: Recognize what type of differential you have. With most cars, you're sporting an open differential, which means if one tire has the least little bit of friction and the other tire has absolutely none, you ain't going nowhere. If you want to make sure you have the best traction possible, make sure both tires are getting the same amount of traction throughout the system.

      You ever think that maybe that young driver studied driving not that long ago. And anything he learned in drivers Ed and defensive driving courses are still fresh in his mind. Sometimes a new driver is better then an old driver just because they understand the rules better as they were just tested on it and had to spend month studying something the old driver hasn't studied in decades. Now that not always true ofcourse, some people don't take those courses. But everyone should. I did and I dont regret it. I know the rules of the road better then allot and have learned allot of tips to help during winter driving or during a mechanical failure. They thought us everything from how to get out of a slide to how to stop of ur car if your gas pedal sticks or your brakes fail or power goes out and there's no power steering or brakes. In my opinion everyone should have to take those courses to get a licence.

  • @Subastolis
    @Subastolis ปีที่แล้ว

    For using handbrake in understeer situations the car must not be going completely straight because then it will do nothing.
    Besides, most of today's cars have electronic parking brakes.
    The solution to understeer is to let off the gas, straighten the steering wheel so the tires regain traction, and turn smoothly again.

    Honestly just drive with caution. If you were to loose grip there is close to nothing that you can really do. Let off the gas, stay calm and just hope that you'll regain grip.
    As long as you drive smoothly and at a lower speed than normal through corners, you should be fine.
    And ALWAYS drive with the correct tyres. Snow tyres, maybe even studded tyres if you live somewhere where it is moist and freezing during night-time.

    It doesn't want to get traction and almost any braking applied will try to lock the brakes
    Yeah it's really fun to commute in the winter (intense sarcasm)

    I'm trying to switch over from a pickup truck, to something more economic on fuel. A lot of the subarus are out of my prove range that I'm considering. Almost all other cars are FWD or RWD. I live on a hill, and I have snow drifts a lot. Are these things I really need to worry about? I just don't want to get stuck. And there's not too many AWDs in coupes or sedans besides subarus.

    Here's my question about front wheel drive:
    If I'm going up a icy road in my front wheel drive car, and there's a dry strip up the middle of the road big enough for just one tire, which tire do I want on that dry strip, left or right?
    Thanks! Great video!

    • @DeTomaso55
      @DeTomaso55 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is no difference. What will probably happen if one driven tire gets more traction that the other is your tire that is on ice/snow will start to spin because of open differential. But when your tires loose grip and start to spin ESP or some kind of traction control shoudl kick in to prevent them from prining too much. just try to feel the car and feel when tires start to spin, you can try countering it by easing of the gas slightly to give your tires some grip.
