People really complaining about which one looks better and all but after waiting 16 YEARS! I'm just glad to see my favorite show ever back and how its made with love. Studio Passione is doing great with the animation.
I would have prefered a season 3. I aint guna be compmeatly satisfied untill they get past where the old left off. But i am happy with the love its getting from the studio. Im just not overly exited to watch the same thing i already own. Though i will be curious of the diferances of any.
i would have prefered a continuation or an adaption of the wolf and parchment series, but this is better than nothing.
@@alexg4711 yees that would have been good too!
@@DreamFireNostalgiaThey cut important content though so for a season 3 they'd have to rearrange the story
@@Ash_Wen-li that is understandable but i supose i did not care as much as i read the LN. And loved them both seperatly. Sometimes its best to just douple down and finish somthing than to reboot and risk having the same problem. Thats my biggest fear right now to be honest
I think I slightly prefer the stills from the old, but the new looks much better in motion.
You can say a lot with a little. I'm on the fence. With this specific scene, you don't know holo yet (as the viewer) and I feel as though the OG forcing your imagination a lot is worthwhile given how the the rest of the anime went.
I feel like the new version makes it more fantisful (yes, that's not a word) as opposed to blunt.
The thing that made holo do endearing in the OG was this sense that you didn't get to see her in her true self. Maybe the new version can pull that off.
new make makes holo looks cuter but still very makes her looks mature, both are very good
As a person who rewatched the old one many times. The color in the old one is more vibrant but the animation is well done on the new one. Still I prefer not to watch the new one unless I have to rewatch again then for rewatching yes I prefer to watch the new one instead. Also Ami's and Jun's voice are more smooth in the old animation compared to new one well even if you seem didnt age even in voice, no one can remove the slight change in our voice as we age.
I think thats just nostalgia.
@@durango3063 you are in a video about a side-by-side comparison. That's literally NOT nostalgia. :)
I think the new one will grow on me, but I feel like Holo and Lawrence are more "mature" in the old one, with both Holo's flirting and Lawrence's flusterment being more subtle
More than mature they feel old for someone like lawrance who only have 25
@@1204khalil 25 in a middle age setting is a pretty advanced age where you can work as early as just a dozen years.
I def prefer maturity
I like the vibrancy of the original and the movements of the remake.
The original made the world and characters we enjoy. Also it has a mood too it.
But the remake has more fluid animation
While it feels like I'm in the minority here, I actually prefer the remake.
While seeing the old one again certainly is nostalgic, The new one just feels more alive to me.
man, the two versions are good. I like how the original is much more clearer with the silhouettes but yeah, the remake really adds life.
@@themelancholyofgay3543 Yeah fr, I like 'em both.
Animation is better in the remake, they clearly did well and had a bigger budget for it. But the warmer colors in the origonal feel better for the setting. Only time will tell
Yep
Old S1 opening can't be beaten, but the new one is still nice.
Holy shit. I was 11 back then and now im 27!! This takes me back!!
Same!
I do like the new animation and fluidity of the remake. However, I still find old anime animation still has it charm whether it my nostalgic eye, or something else. I also prefer the original anime opening more than the remake.
spoke well.
I also found her jovial behavior strange
The only way I can describe it is that the art style of the original feels more "tangible" than the new one.
I like both. Obviously, in terms of preference, I like the Older one more cuz It was the First one I saw and It marked me, being my favorite anime after all. But I have no complaints on the New one.
The New one of course looks better, it's more modern after all. But I'll never see the vintage look of the OG as outdated. It holds up
old op is fire.
@@alexg4711
The old opening helps me go to sleep whenever I having insomnia. The music is very relaxing.
A lot more movement and animation in the new one, must have a bigger budget
Its about the same, the new one is considered pretty low budget already so.
They just cut to more scenes instead to compensate.
Or the direction is just better
its all about the staff, you can have great animation with the right people. most anime have about the same budget
@@MobscastBlackOutTechnological advancement has been reducing budget needs for years. Even when the original was animated, they were able to use a fraction of the budget something like that would have needed back in the 90s. Keep in mind that the average computer today is 60-100x as powerful as they were when the original was animated, and that doesn't even account for software and technique improvements.
Did you not notice how when she stood up - the original had a lot of animations put in it while the remake makes it look like there is no wind at all?
They're both great for their time. My personal preference is the older one.
Old: Nostalgic, good memories
New: objectively better, this looks so much better damn
New overuses 3d animation too much, and of low quality too.
@@Noobochok A lot of people are complaining about the 3D but I simply cant find it!?
Where is it? If I and a many others cant even notice that is it that bad?
@@davii_ms just watch something like Berserk (those newer series that look like dogshit), then you'll start noticing it everywhere, and won't be able to unsee. Besides that I can only suggest you and those others to schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist.
I'd prefer the old character designs more, the stylized artstyle just doesn't fit right with me
@@theunforsaken_ thats nostalgia speaking man, even in the LN the design is so much similar
Kevin Penkin is cooking hard as usual, I also love the new voices, and the art style being closer to the LN. I'm really hyped for this adaptation, and I hope we get a 3rd season this time
The voices are the same! Well, Jun Fukuyama definitely sounds older.
@@kawaiimar3791 wait, for real? Holo's va feels so different
@@ProitoOk nope, it's Ami Koshimizu all the same.
@@ProitoOk she is 15 years older of course she feels different
@@ProitoOkThe voice actress also does a lot of tomboy tough girl since then. Like Ryuko from kill la kill, Yang in the japanese dub of Rwby and Beidou from genshin impact. Maybe it's harder for her to do her old holo voice because of that, so it sound different.
Both is great, new and old. This show is a good example to use the Quote "all a child is only need, roots and wings"
I'm surprised they remade this , the original is already very high quality and quite timeless ^ ^
I'm also surprised the original is from 2008. It's really nice quality ^ ^
Based on the beginning sequence, it looks like they plan on doing a full adaptation of the books, not just 4 of them.
They skipped an entire volume in the original that introduced characters that are important in later volumes of the series (The anime started when there was only 6 volumes out and the main story ends at v17)
the 2008 is timeless...
Can't wait for the remake's "Birthday suit" Holo.
She was wearing it for most of the first episode. Or do you mean her wolf form?
First and foremost... it is so good that an anime like Spice and Wolf had a remake. It was one of my first animes, back then in 2014 when i started to watch anime a lot, and is so important to my life, cuz is one of those stories that make me fall in love with Light Novels and became a fan translator. So, watching it again, with better animation, lighting and sound effects, is a plus. But for nothing in the world, i would put one above the other. The OG characters design was top quality of its time, the music is so classic, and you can not forget how good is the seiyus work back then. The remake of course, it is just the first episode, but already shine with its own light, as i say before, better animation, better lighting, better sound recording.
Even the Seiyus, time don't forgive anybody, so the shining and youthful voices of Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu have disappeared a little, but the experience for all this years working in the industry show from the get go.
Hope for a good adaptation, and hope for that Kiss that in the OG was dull made be corrected... if the anime adapt until that part.
OG uses livelier music, whereas the remake's feels like background music for now
I prefer the more vivid lively look of the original a bit more, but all the characters seem on point thus far. I am optimistic about the new adaptation so far. What I REALLY want to know is if Brina Palencia and J. Michael Tatum will be starring in the dub once again. Because they did such a fantastic job of bringing these characters to the English language and I cannot imagine anyone else voicing the iconic duo in English.
the remake has alot of movements and details. I love it more than the og
Both are great, I like 2008’s character designs more though, the new one looks really similar to a lot of anime coming out today which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I like how 2008’s looks a lil more unique. I haven’t seen the show yet but if I had to start I’d start with 2008.
honestly what I miss is the soundtrack of the older one. which they could have incorporated it to the new one
My only hope is that they complete this. It's a great series, regardless, and two seasons of the original was never enough.
When the dub comes -- if it comes -- they better keep Holo's aristocratic accent.
That made me want to watch both versions to feel the differences, I haven’t watched this series yet so I’m still hesitating which one I would like to begin
Her eyes were drawn better in the original. That's the only thing I miss.
I think people must be stuck in their nostalgia. This is my first time seeing both of them so I'd like to consider myself unbiased and i cannot see anything that would make the original better visually. Im a big fan of the 90s and early 2000s type of art styles too so thats not even the reason i think the original looks worse. Worse than the remake doesnt mean its bad though. I still think the original one looks nice and has a certain charm but when it comes to visual quality the remake is objectively better.
It's called preference, not nostalgia.
@Gigachimp yeah and i believe that preference is purely fuelled by nostalgia. And even if im wrong and people genuinely do prefer the old style then go back and watch the original instead. Its not a reason to hate on the remake.
@@Mahito28 I think you are right
I haven't seen anyone mention that the character models are far more consistent in the newer one
@@Mahito28hate watching is a real thing which I personally don’t understand. Maybe it’s out of curiosity or pettiness but like what Marie Kondo said, if it doesn’t spark joy then leave it 😆
I see a lot of people talking about smoothness and quality of the animation, but not as much about WHAT actions are being animated. I feel the original had a more realistic and intimate feel to the character's actions.
The direction in animation was different back then than now. I don’t think the old one intended to have a "realistic" feel in its animation and nowadays there’s more key frames assigned to basic movements. It’s simply a stylistic choice and also a fictional work so why not let it have more character acting? Sometimes still frames can look boring and uninteresting, it doesn’t need to feel what you think is "realistic" since it’s animation and it’s all about the movement.
@@AkiraVA But just because something is animated also doesn't mean that it must be over stylized or not realistic. Like you said, it is a stylistic choice.
In any case, my comment was less on the animation itself, and more about what was being animated ("WHAT actions are being animated"). Notice the interaction between the two characters and how they interact with one another. Notice how in the older one, she sits down and scoots next to him, while in the other she continues standing, looming over him. This is more what I meant. People aren't talking about how the characters are interacting in the scene, and how these difference effect how the scene feels.
@BigFry9591 I find it funny how you make a big deal in such small interaction. The differences of the two scenes weren’t enough to make that a big deal of how "impactful" the scene would feel was since it wasn’t such too big of a thing.
@@AkiraVA When did I make a big deal out of it? I was just stating what I observed, which is something I found strange, but I never went overboard about it in my original comment or anything.
But it seems that you either don't understand or underestimate tone and/or character interactions in a scene, and how it can change its impact. Even the smallest of interactions can have huge meanings.
@BigFry9591 the reason I think you made a big deal out of it was how you seemed to really care so much about that scene and that something little should be expressed in a big impactful manner when it didn’t need to be. Not only that in this reply it’s literally just that one scene that I said wasn’t too big of a deal to affect anything and you jumped straight on the gun that I don’t understand tone and character interactions in a scene just because I think it didn’t need to have a big impact. Do you really think that alone would affect something big later on? Honestly if you prefer the "realism" just watch the old version and chainsaw man or just enjoy the remake for what it is. Your recent reply further makes me think that you’re making a big deal out of it so let’s just end the argument here since it’s getting more ridiculous.
her eyes look so vivid in the remake
My only complaints are that the first episode's exposition felt a bit rushed, and that I'm rather fond of Holo's initial design. But everything else is quite nice. Especially happy they'll be sticking far closer to the LN this time around (though some changes like the talk to the village elder and the scene with revealing her giant paw being changed for brevity is fair enough.)
I know that people loved the outfit Holo got in Wolf and Silent Farewell and I do like it, but I personally like the purple outfit better.
Watched the original a long time ago…
There’s just something more in the new one that makes me prefer it. The faces also look less childish in the art department.
she acts more like a normal person whos a bit of a trickster in the old version. in the new version shes extra 'cute'.
I love...
The first season of the original anime was pretty low budget, but the second season was beyond and all in quality and story telling, seeing the remake its shocking how they can just barely proceed ahead of the original in terms of quality.
I expected them to at least match or surpass the second season in quality, but here we are.
I prefer the older style, though my nostalgia makes me biased, and I'm glad they kept it plain. The extra detail shows on the lighting, the backgrounds, the movements of characters. I was worried it would be so over the top when remade to fit with more modern anime, like how Blue Exorcist looks now compared to the original season. If anything it seems that they went out of their way to keep it adjacent to the first show, make it 1 to 1 faithful to the books, and even ensured the soundtrack kept some of the halmarks of the first show like how Holo's mystical, deific scenes were accompanied by a solo vocalist. It gives me hope that they will not bastardize this new running and will do it justice.
@@thegrim418
The second season was modern enough to maintain the same level of style and quality, but I am not entirely sold on this new remake.
@@SMGJohn My theory is that they want to animate the entire story this time and wanted it all to be cohesive start to finish. My reasoning being the intro scene of episode 1 and chloe going back to being Yarei. If that's their goal I understand it and hope they do it all justice. So far I'm optimistic given how they've paid homage to the original but time will tell I suppose.
I haven't watched the original, but come on, that's some banger music from Kevin Penkin in the remake
Older version has a better color pallet imho. The more stylized animation gives it a charm the remake is lacking. New Holo lacks the maturity shown in the original and is more flamboyant too.
I hope season 3 comes with the new one
I prefer the season 3 instead of remake. Thats what we are really waiting for.
Well they teaserd myuri so the chance is there.
@@UlferTheWolf Well Season 2 skipped an entire volume, which will likely be adapted in the last quarter of this season.
@@UlferTheWolf Original one skipped volume 4, which clearly meant it was never meant to be full adaptation (it was critical to future plot). I know people want to see continuation, but let's fix the order properly this time.
All anime skip content to make the story more fluid, there is always a way to reorganize what is not placed, it is no excuse for me to have decided not to follow the previous one, the author is vain, simply that and vain people fail, which is why dxd has not I had another season again because something similar happened and when it changed in the 4th season it was a failure 😷
I don't care about the looks! I care about the music! I live for that drone and pipe. I'll admit my standards are impossible to please though. The og ost is my favourite of all time.
They both look good. Damn!
To anyone who think that the old one was flawless, I would invite you to look back at how they animated the horses
Who cares about that, do you watch anime for the horses? xD
What matters is how they carry the story, something that the current one does not feel as fluid as the previous one, that the interaction of both feels more casual and credible. 😷
But the horses 😔🐎🐎🐎🐎
@@jerson.romantico.1521 Yes but this video is mostly artstyle and animation comparison, not story execution comparison.
Funny to see people complaining that they don't like the art in the new adaptation, but when I objectively mention that the old one also has its weakness suddenly the reply is "but story is the one that is important" Lol
I honestly cannot say which one i prefer. Both have such a unique charm that the style just give me good feelings of differing type. The old one feels more mature in a way while this remake evokes a whimsy feeling that is no less great of a feeling. One thing is for certain and that is my excitement for them adapting the light novels more faithfully this time. Oh the full story we will be told is worth the wait.
ill stick to the old one
I thought remake needn't but in it made absolutely everything better.
Older one is best.
The handshake in old 😊
I dont like how the new design and voice direction makes Holo feel less mature. She still is obviously, but doesnt look it.
I wish they'd at least kept using the original anime opening. I know this is just wishful thinking but damn that song was so good it's kinda hard to let it go. Hell, it's 2024 and i'm still listening to it.
The amazing thing is they used same voice actors as the og for remake and ngl the og holo looks more mature
I like the remake of spice and wolfs mine only complaint is the soundtrack I kinda miss the old one
Left: Loli wolf girl with better motion
Right: Elegant Teenager wolf girl that can attract most of men in the world with her personality and tone (ah yes i can hear the old voice act with the scene and yes i know they have the same CV) but with inferior motion and character facial express becasue it's an old animation even you pause the video the images seldom crack also the background has more detail and nostalgic didn't do shit with those fact
The left one still gold tho
So...
Can i see the daughter of Lawrence and Holo in the animation in the rest of my life?
The sound track of the original is brilliant... Let's see what the remake has to offer
I probably prefer Remake here, but the very first minute of the original is better imo, as it is my favorite start of any anime ever.
I never watched the original but on the new one I find a bit odd the effect they put on Holo's hair that is on her forehead, makes it seem like her face is glowing
Tengo que ver ambos, me han comentado que es muy bueno
The remake besides the look (since both are good), it feels more natural
it's a pleasure to have an opportunity to see this superb anime again in a new adaptation.
But the old adaptation is already very good, and this new version is somewhat pointless.
Sooo are they going to finish the whole story???? Or just remake.
I would prefer a continuation of the og, now we'll have to wait 2 seasons for the remake to catch up wich in is about two years of wait in the best case scenario. The new one looks good tough
To be fair, old one looks brighter because its daylight, while new one looks more muted because its nightime near dawn, looks like.
I like both but I have a feeling I will miss old ost hahaha.
Even the voices are different. I honestly like Fukuyama Jun's younger voice better but the remake one suits the character well too.
He can't help being 15 years older, no way around that 😅
The compulsion to say, "Sasuga, Wise Wolf."
this old have the sound in background match perectly with the situation
Holo has much more of that loli Shinobu type of voice, I like it
16 years of waiting...it will probably going to take 10 years to animate entire story
Sadly this studio almost never make a continuation of their project so probably there won't be anymore season after this one
They had Myuuri in the first scene of the first episode. They're clearly gunning for a full adaptation of the series Fruits Basket style
It's because its quality is bad, just look at dxd, the 4th season was a failure that's why they didn't release more seasons anyway, this remake is unnecessary just because of the author's vanity, it wasn't faithful enough, it's because he decided to cancel the previous one, which is a disappointment because if it were for money I would understand but it is not for money but vanity 😷
^^ maybe it's because the 2024 version are her memories, they need to make a few decent changes and that could be the reason why the older version looks"brighter" or how should i put it 🤔🤷 sry, not so easy to describe, but english isnt my 1st tongue 🤗
So it's a remake, not a new season?
So far yes. First two episodes are pretty similar.
I love the new artstyle, but I'm gonna have a very hard time getting used to Holo's new voice.
New one is good in animation
Old one have more vibrant color. Jun and Ami's voice is more fresh (cant blame, no one is immortal in real life).
But what we want more is the latest season of Spice x Wolf that follows up to the female merchant (wnnabe) that deceive the couples.
How did it not get restricted lol
I like the original better, remake is overexaggerating most interactions and movement
yes, that is called animation :v
@@jorgehcampos1054 I think it's called filler animation. Artist trying to fill out space that doesn't need to be filled with movement, probably out of fear of being decried as reusing stills to save on work.
@@JS-kr8fs LOL what are you taking about? did you even see the chapter? There is still frames on new version just like any other anime, where is the "unwanted animation"??, do you know acting? like communicating emotions not only with words?
@@JS-kr8fsI would have to agree with the other guys here especially as a LN reader. The LN is very descriptive of characters' movements as it is very important to show their personality. That's why I really like that they add more movement to Holo, showing her playfulness in this scene. No movement here is wasted in my opinion.
@@jorgehcampos1054 It can be done in acting, too. Overemoting. Trying to fill space with gestures.
No offense to those who like the new one, but I prefer the way the animation looks in the original. Too much CG visible to me in the new one. It reminds me of another remake where the original artwork is (IMHO) better - Kini no Tabi. Far prefer the original in that one as well
But… it still Spice and Wolf, but others view
Я смотрю на правую, и думаю что это ремейк...
the voice acting is impeccable in both. The new Holo and Lawrence look a slightly different. As if they are 5 years or so older.
I can see past that. But what will never stop irritating my eyes is the atrocious CGI.
It's not an action anime with sakuga. It's just a still background that pans slightly.
Another point of contention is animation or how little of it is there. Pay attention to how many close up shots are used so not to draw a background, or how static the shot angles are, or how little movement there is... It reminds me a lot of when Naruto Shippuuden first aired. A lot of people were praising it because they were happy it was an end to the fillers. But Shippuuden had such a bad animation quality it was hard to watch. And they also used CGI! Same thing here. People are happy to see Holo back and they are nostalgic for the series they watched 15 years ago. But mark my words - What you're feeling right now is shopping high. This feeling of euphoria will last for a while. But then you'll be hit with a buyers remorse. Pilot episodes are supposed to be all out attention grabbers. If that's the best they can present to us, I'm not looking forward to what's to come.
The original is better directed. The remake has better animation.
The original had its own vibe & identity, the remake feels & looks like every other anime nowadays.
It's not really a problem with this show specifically; i feel like has been an issue with anime in recent years.
so true
the old one looked like other anime of it's time as well, lets be honest here!
why did they even remake it if this is the quality they are going to make
Cause they couldn't continue the old anime since there was cut content and new fans would be left in a weird spot
It's more because the author is vain for not being so faithful, he took his novel to another company, the same thing happened with DxD when he released the 4th season, which failed because it's not about being more faithful but rather how the story develops and even though it's not It was faithful enough if the anime was well made, no fan complained as far as I investigated the subject. 😷
gona be honest. i watched the first episode and it felt exactly the same. dunno why they made this
Because they intend to (hopefully) make it through all the novels of the original story (17 volumes).
The OG show skipped book 4, which was a shame but not the biggest deal back then. Since then however, book 4 ended up being extremely relevant and important for later volumes.
15年経っても旧バージョンは全然劣って見えないな…。
ただ、EDだけは旧作のが良かったな(Clarisは大好きだけど)
Love the remake! Don't get me wrong. I also like the original, but I just love the remake the most.
We are lucky enough to have a remake. Waited 20 yrs for a RahXephon remake and still waiting.
Old version better!
I like the remake but i just can tget use to home boys reactive body language compared to the old one
I'm gonna be honest, I usually side with newer animation, like almost always; but something about the color palette/lightning in the remake just does not work. In these clips it looks fine, but in some of the sunny shots, the grass is just way too... green? Idk it feels almost washed out. And this is a problem that exists elsewhere, it feels like the entire color palette is too simplistic for the detail of the animation. Watch both of the openings to see what I'm talking about. The older show was more bold with it's lightning and color choices even though it was overall less vibrant, and the new one seems afraid to really branch out into differing colors. This might be the only time other than like FMA2003 and Berserk where I actually prefer the older animation style. I really like how Holo looks in the new series though, I'll give it that.
It's the lighting, for sure. Everyone seems to have a spotlight on their face.
Me gusta más el diseño de 2008.
New looks kind of generic
soul vs souless
Different animations
Holo from the old one looks more delicious & prettier, the new one looks like they made her slightly younger like those typical high school teenage girl look 😌
I really like the new one because it greatly reassembles the art style from the light novel illustration
That is how she is supposed to look. Because this is not a remake from old anime, is an adaptation from original novels.
I actually prefer the new style as a LN reader ngl. I remembered reading the LN then went to saw the og anime and I was like wtf? It took me a while to get used to it but the og is still pretty.
Ogs direction seems better
The new version looks all put fresher than the old one.
Her eyes are now a glow up from her previous entry.
May everyone enjoy the Remake. I won't watch it. I will keep my memory clean or it will get overwritten by the new one. I just prefer the old Artstyle. Even tho it was never considered to be Original to the LN.

Always old is better😅
admit it. grow up.
the old animation is by far better. more detailing, feels more natural.
new animation is absolute garbage. it's the same with most new animes. recent animes (2020+) animations are straight trash.
2008 >
Yeah og is better.
Old version it's better
Come one, aside from the more fluency and higher (digitalized, so meh) texture resolution, the cinematology is absolutely lost in the remake, especially with later scenes. And S1 of the original was the cheap season.
As someone who has not seen the old one, the new one definitely looks better. Nostalgia makes you blind even if it's side by side comparison.
I’ll always love the original, but I’m enjoying the new one as well. The funniest thing is that back in 2008-2009, the original show got criticized a lot for subpar animation. I think the original does hold up and look better in some areas, but if you watch the whole thing, you’ll quickly notice it’s not consistent.
The new show hasn’t been without its iffy parts so far as well imo, but it feels more consistent quality wise so far.
New art is better, but old voices are better.
they are the same VAs
@@tangibletuna9422 vocal actor? you sure about that? the voice sounds different to me... maybe it's just aging
Honestly I feel like the new one has more characteristic and personality. The movie motion and animation makes it feel more realistic and full of life and not soo stiff.
