Great reaction- thanks! The drunken sailor was Bucky (Matthew Buckner) long time friend and former member of their group, "4-2-Five" back in their high school/college days. Bucky works as a choreographer for Universal/Disney theme parks and has assisted Geoff solo and Voice Play with dance routines on a couple of their videos. Again your hunches are accurate as you are getting to know Voice Play and their featured guests. Yes, you were spot on about Eli's character voice as he does voice acting and Jose Rosario has been touring as a cast member for Hamilton. I think you would really enjoy "We Don't Talk About Bruno" even if you have not seen the movie (you can check out just that song from the movie on You Tube rather than watch the whole movie if you want). Geoff and Voice Play are the best at anything Disney or Halloween as they have the background experience doing that (My favorite covers are "Little Mermaid Medley", "We Don't Talk about Bruno" both feature a female vocalist and "Hellfire" from Hunchback Of Notre Dame. Love your tattoo by the way!

Drunken sailor is a past member Matthew Buckner aka Bucky. He is also in their short of 500 miles. Eli is also a voice actor. Jose is a couple years older than Cesar but they went to high school together and were in the same theatre class.

Geoff's comment about "Gonna carve his heart out" (with a wooden spoon no less) was a tribute to Alan Rickman's Robin Hood. Both Eli and Bucky are also voice actors. Bucky was a member of VoicePlay (4:2:Five) for a short time but his singing voice gave out and he went on to other adventures. Bucky also did the choreography for Geoff's Monster Mash.

You don’t need to watch the movie to watch any of the medley’s. The Mermaid Medley is actually my favorite.
I did want to say that Geoff just put out a solo song today… and J.None put out a solo song a few weeks ago. So if you are interested in seeing any of their solo projects, those are some newer things you could react to.
Thanks for the reaction ! 🎉

VP would argue that this is their special brand of dumb - we love their goofiness. However, their vocals are ALWAYS amazing. 🏴‍☠️ 🌹🕊
PS: do watch their Little Mermaid medley!

I'm going to hint about the next VoicePlay coming up - think a twist on pirate/shanty. Can't say more than that except I think it's awesome. And for another 'watery' song, try their cover of "Wellerman". Not terribly long, but fun!
Bucky (who played the drunken sailor) is a friend of Geoff and Layne from many years back. He used to sing with them pre-VoicePlay. And next Halloween if you do Geoff's "Monster Mash", Bucky was responsible for the 'dance' of the monsters. To hear Bucky actually sing, try VP's short of "500 Miles". I absolutely loved Bucky's drunk dance here. He looks like those inflated things in front of car dealerships with the flappy arms. Perfect drunk dance!

For We Don't Talk About Bruno.
I have never seen the movie but love the video.
That's the way 99.9% of their videos are. You don't have to see the movie or hear the original to enjoy their version. They're all amazing.
Also. I thought Voiceplay's new video is coming to TH-cam today. However it will be released next Friday, the 16th instead.
    Sorry about that.
Geoff Castellucci released his yesterday. Wicked Game by Chris Isaak.

I think what i love most about this one is Geoff showing how much he's progressed in his subharmonics.... not just by singing them as usual, but by singing them with actual lyrics that you can understand.

Cool reaction!! You've nailed it why we love #Voiceplay! The two or more octave difference between the highs (Eli or Cesar) and then Geoff. The performance, acting, makeup are always just as perfection as the vocals. And then Layne and more Layne and more Layne. He's the sleeper until you pay attention. Geoff and others got their start at Disney in Orlando, so that's where the acting, makeup and performing abilities come from. We don't talk about Bruno is perfection. Watching the movie helps with many of the elements they incorporate into the performance. Since you're old school, absolutely watch Hellfire from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Watching that movie isn't necessarily required but knowing the film's main antagonist, Judge Claude Frollo is a help. Watching the original version of Hellfire on TH-cam first could help. Love your reactions. Subscribed and down for more!!

Eli does voice acting as his other job, so he is always fantastic at the character voices!
It doesn’t really matter if you have seen the Disney movies or not to enjoy the VP covers, it’s just more fun with context 😊

Loving your reactions, for real! I hadn't seen Encanto the first time I listened to We Don't Talk About Bruno, and I still enjoyed the performance/song. Some things made more sense later when I could put them in context, but the song itself was still a banger at first listen. And Ashley Diane has such an amazing voice.

They also did Wellerman, and a mini-short of A Pirate's Life for Me.
Also, Home Free did a sea shanty medley. I'm not normally a big fan of Home Free, because they tend to lean pretty hard into country; but their sea shanty medley is an exception.
I don't think you necessarily need to watch Encanto to appreciate VP's covers of Bruno and Surface Pressure; but on the other hand, Encanto is arguably one of Disney's better movies, so if you like that sort of thing...

  • @PBobinAustin

Maybe not absolutely necessary, but you will appreciate Bruno more if you see Encanto first. Also, you mentioned Mermaid. Yes! You need to see the Little Mermaid Medley. So fun :)

Such a fun song. I had never really paid attention to the lyrics other than “ what do you do with a drunken sailor” until college when my roommate provided some very suggestive lyrics. So when I heard they were doing this I was a little concerned. I was relieved that there are traditional lyrics and they used those🤣.
Geoff wrote the bridge which really provided a nice change of pace. When we all complained about the creepy doll, Geoff told us that “ her name is Clara and she has feelings!” The comment that he makes about carving his heart out with a wooden spoon is a reference to Alan Rickman and ( I believe) Robin Hood, Men in Tights.
When you watch again, watch Eli while Layne is playing with his toys. I believe that the whale and the boat are a reference to the Wellerman which they put out as a mini not too long before. That would explain Eli’s frantic head shaking and desolation when the whale 🐋 ⛴️🐳 finally catches up .
They have done too minis that you might want to check out: they did a mini of the Wellerman with Anthony Guargiula. previously they had also done a mini with just the four regular members with the pirate song from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. It’s a little silly but a lot of fun.
Regarding Encanto: it’s a great movie and the music is by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It isn’t absolutely necessary to watch the movie but you should at least watch the song the family Madrigal so you have an idea of what they’re trying to accomplish. I do feel you’d get a lot more out of it if you saw the movie however

Essentially correct, but wrong movie. The line where Alan Rickman threatened to ‘carve his heart out with a spoon’ was from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Well lets see, Bucky, is the name of the "Drunken Sailor." I know he has a channel of his own but really someone else will need to give you the down load on Bucky. He is in a few of their shorts. As far as voices. Eli also is a voice actor. Jose last time I looked was part of the Chicago cast for Hamilton. VoicePlay is always the dramatic ones. Fun or serious, they do it all. My suggestions. Creep (Cesar can make you cry), In the Air Tonight and Time Warp. HellFire is from Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dam. Thanks for this Zack, really enjoy your reactions. Oh!! and Dream On!

Encanto is a great movie!! You will love it! Watch it and then watch their video, it will make more sense. On another note, I love your tattoo, 2 of my favorite things to collect are things to do with pirate ships, any old time sailing vessels really, and light houses. I'm a nautical girl at heart myself. Great reaction, glad you are enjoying Voice Play so far.

I understand he was a member in their 4:2:Five days but not sure, "Bucky" Buckner he also did a couple of minis with them and helped Geoff with choreography on Monster Mash. They've also done "The Wellerman" as a "biggie" filmed like The Lion Sleeps Tonight as well. For Encanto the movie is well worth your time and all the music is great, but you don't really need to see it you could just find the song and watch that.

It's not really necessary to watch Encanto before reacting to Bruno to enjoy it. But like somebody else said it would help to get everything in their video. Watching their version without knowing the movie would be a little bit like hearing or seeing references you don't get. But it will be fun both ways. 🙂Looking forward to your reaction.

You are right to be leery of the doll. VP actually gave her a name - "Her name is Clara and SHE HAS FEELINGS!" Which is kind of freaky in it's own right - and dolls don't normally bother me. I still wish that in the last shot of the MV, where everyone raised their mugs together, Geoff had raised the doll instead!
I remember singing (and enjoying!) this song in elementary school, which is kind of messed-up once you know a little about the song's history. Most of the original verses in the song actually had to do with the punishments a sailor could suffer for various infractions they might commit. "The captain's daughter" was the nickname given to the whip used to give lashes to someone who had done something bad enough to be flogged as punishment. So "put him in the bed with the captain's daughter" means to whip someone so severely they can't move to get out of bed - and given the state of medicine in general and aboard ship in particular, could easily leave the recipient crippled or dead.

Actually it's not so much a pirate accent as British, but Eli is a voice-over artist in his spare time. :) But most of the guys are capable of various accents. This song came from the whaling ships - think Wellerman. I particularly liked that Layne was doing a very good sound of the Irish bodhran, or hand drum. Oh Geoff always plays things down, describing himself as goofy. No, it's fun, pure genius. I watched the Bruno before seeing the movie. Same with most of them to be honest, didn't see Nightmare Before Christmas until after hearing them do it. Frankly the films were a disappointment after VoicePlay's version. :)

Watch Encanto - it's really good. Then go for VP's "We don't talk about Bruno". This film is NOT really a story for small children... like some Disney movies in my pov. The worst is The Hunchback... you don't have to watch that one to understand the cruel evil of "Hellfire". Did it at school - my 14year old ladies were impressed... 😱

I would recommend watching "Encanto" before you do the song. You'll get the parts better, and most of the jokes. I watched VP's video before watching the movie and I didn't get a lot. Plus, it's an excellent movie. How wrong can you go with Lin Manuel Miranda?
