Doing SG RTI century ride is next on my bucket list, hope to make it in 2024 or even earlier. A very inspiring video, thanks for uploading this, Jade. Greetings from neighboring Indonesia!
Well done. Century rides for someone who's just started out not too long ago is a massive achievement. Often time with food and energy, u kinda often need to almost constantly eat on the bike for long rides like this, regardless if you are hungry or not. Energy drinks are an easy way to consume carbs if you are not comfy riding and eating at the same time. More centuries to come! Good luck!
Hey thanks man. Haha problem is when you are a picky eater, as I am! And I still mostly only like water when on the go. Will have to better plan my pit stops in future. Thanks for the encouraging words and advice!
This is a very SIONG one I believe! A group of good cheering friends did helps a moral boost. Honestly I don’t think I’ll try this 🥵. BUT YOU DID IT‼️ Salutes 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Really helps to have awesome mates! At 120km I was about to take the 10km shortcut home, which would have been lame. If I can do it, I feel like anyone can! Thanks thanks hee.
Gosh Jade. You still look so fresh after an overnight ride :) Good ride there keep more videos coming! My longest ride was from Trengganu to SG -520KM over 3 days for a charity ride event. Everyday just cycle like 100+km it was daunting, tiring and ass-pain but much fun and I super enjoyed it! Too bad now the borders are closed and we cannot cycle in to MY to ride. I miss those rolling hills in MY :D
Hahaha hardly fresh, but thank you! Wow your longest ride sounds way more daunting than this! I want to ride in Malaysia too, once we can! But maybe not 520 km over 3 days, LOL
Congrats on your bike ride Jade. You have great friends that encouraged you and stayed with you. I hope you took a much needed bath soak after that. I'm very proud of you. Yes, I'd like more bike rides vlogs. Thanks for sharing Jade...🎥😃👍👌👊🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️💪💪💪🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤
Hey thanks man. Will try to do more bike ride vlogs. My friends are awesome also because they help me film, otherwise I wouldn't be able to do these videos!
I absolutely LOVE this energetic and fun video!!!! Having myself complete about 12 of these 100 mile rides myself, I know the dedication involved. BUT this video rocks!!!
Finally you did it! Btw i saw you at the rifle range few weeks ago but i was too exhausted to say hi and good morning to you coz riding up the hill is not my thing. lol! Btw have you tried riding mountain bike at trail like T15 or chestnut? You should experience it! Riding trail is more tiring than road biking. Keep it up and ride happy!!!
Cleats are tough to start with but you gain much efficiency in the strokes. I have done about 12 century rides in Malaysia, Thailand, Holand, German events. Its important to discover your own pace and mentally prepared for climbs, like the dragon back of Melaka, 13 hills is quick succession or the final climb of the PCC Interstate on stage one to top of Frazer Hill and the final climb up to Cameron 77km uphill in the final stretch on the 2nd day. Cleats, not to worry, you get better with practice. The solid carbon composite sole makes up for the loss of energy on the downstrokes brought about by softer shoes of ordinary padels. Great to be able to do the first one! Hurrah! You will get addicted and get better with more rides. Hiding behind the peloton and try to keep tucked in no more than half a bike length goes a long way to save 20% of energy on long stretches. Assos bibs also keeps our butts from being shredded. Yes, they are expensive, but it saved my butt on my first day of Thailand Tour of Friendship from Bangkok to Hua Hin! Congrats, keep cycling, keep having fun and keep the breeze in the hair! Oh yes, keep hydrated and make sure you have enough slow release carbs and simple proteins (like sweet potatoes, Bak Kua etc) and fast release carbs (gels, bananas, simple sugar complexes), salts. Dousing water is never a good idea, you will thin out your system and will bong around 120km mark or the 4th hour. The fastest century we did, my group of 7 managed to finish 168 km Trengganu in 4 hours 7 mins. That averages 45kph....not having proper nutrition can be dangerous. For a newbie, well done! Yes, the effort is exponential, but the achievement is something nobody can rob you of.
Wow thanks for the advice and sharing. Now I am going to explore what you said about dousing water...because yes, it was exactly at 120km that I majorly bonked! Will really need to train myself to do isotonics and gels along the way. Your adventures sound amazing! Hope I can get to do some of those routes in the near future, once the borders to Malaysia properly open again!
My back and neck are already feeling sore just by looking at how much reached out you are on your bike lol.. need a much smaller size bike to make cycling much more enjoyable :)
Have u started using cleats. How long did u take to learn clipping-in and out? Any mishaps during learning? What type of cleats and shoes are u using? I still contemplating.
Congratulations! It's still on my bucket list. What I learned about riding long distance: carbs fuel the body, energy gels/snack like cliff bars every 45 min, 10 min breaks every 15 miles, lunch with real food which includes carbs, a century might call for 2 lunch breaks. Food is fuel and carbs are a cyclists friend. I learned a lot from the GCN (global cycling network) group, their on TH-cam as well. Congrats again! :)
Thanks Ginny! Haha I have since started watching GCN stuff too! And for me, from this experience, I think I definitely need at least two lunch breaks! What is hard for me is forcing down the snack food like gels and isotonics mid-ride, when I really don't feel hungry or like eating anything. Need to figure my way around that.
@@jadeseahOFFICIAL You can get those salted sweets and nom on them while riding and drink plain water thereafter. For example Shio Ame, Japanese salt candy which they like to eat during hot days
@@jadeseahOFFICIAL Nice!! It is hard to eat or take in a gel snack but it does keep the blood sugars up because cycling although it is good for you is extreme especially riding long miles. My blood sugar has dropped in the past when riding and it ruined the entire day because I couldn't recover so understanding how important it is makes me diligent. :) You'll find what works for you and then you'll be set. :) In the mean time thanks for sharing your adventures!! :)
Hi Jade! Thank you so much for the informative video as I am doing my first RTI (without LP1) in 2 weeks' time and I am worried as to how I would be able to ride all the way without giving up. Watching your video gave me more confidence that I would be able to do it but I am still abit worried about the 30kmh rolling as my own rolling speed is currently around 25kmh when I take it easy. I would like to ask if you did any long riding prior to the RTI to help train up for it?
Good thing you can have food while cycling. For me I do pit stops at petrol kiosks. Only thing I do is try to use my energy gells from GU to give me energy boosts during my rides. I stock electrolytes in my bottles so I have replenishing of salts and other ingredients to keep me going. I started using gatorade many years back when I started riding but it's not good enough. So then I switched to isotonic drinks. No good. And I heard cyclist or runners using electrolytes.. So this has worked for me when doing long distances but I felt that it was not enough. I made more stops along the way. And then I remembered how I was using energy gells during my runs. Gells have ones with caffeine and without. And I also read that before you go for a ride take coffee to give u that boost. No milk.. Just coffee. It will wear out fast so u need to replenish your energy back. Do all that and you'll be fine. So now before I go out for a ride.. I'll make a cup or so of coffee and stock myself with gells before my next big ride out. Cleats wise. I have both mountain bike and road bike ones. You'll have to get used to the system Start with small rides to get the hang of things. Don't jump to a long ride. People often fall off their bikes coz they are not accustomed to the pedal n cleats. And you can adjust the tension on your pedals so its easier to clip off. I do it with both my road n mountain bike pedals. Once you get the hang of things you'll be OK.
Yes, got my bike fit done at Fahrenheit Performance at Novena. Let me know if you need a contact! Else have a go, ask for Martin, and say you got to know about them from me.
We stuck to an average speed of around 30km/hour, which I find comfortable. At points our speed went up to 35, but I found this to tire me out, to maintain that for a ride over 100km long, I really can't remember how long we took, but I reckon around 8-10 hours?
Haha taking a break from long long rides for awhile. Doing a 100km this weekend, then travelling till Christmas! So next one definitely only in 2022. Please suggest nice routes if you have them!
You remember that TV program "The Amazing Race"... if I can choose anyone to go on that with me it would be none other than Ms Jade Seah (2nd choice is her friend who can get by with 30 mins of sleep)
Well done! I believe you'll be even more exhausted without clipless pedals. Pedalling efficiency is key for long distance rides so get used to using cleats fast. 30kph rolling speed is also considered slow for roadies. A more typical pace will be 35kph rolling speed. Remember, the faster you clear the route, the better especially under the sun & scorching heat! Ride safe!!
Expressways include things like the CTE, PIE, KPE, etc. We didn't and don't ride on expressways. We went on West Coast Highway, Nicoll Highway and some flyovers. All of these are not expressways, and are 100% legal to cycle on in Singapore. A common mistake you made there, due to lack of understanding of Singapore traffic rules. But thanks for the concern! (Although a friendlier tone and absence of name-calling would have gone a long way in making for a more pleasant interaction between us. :) )
How is this beginner?!?!?! But that aside, i have the same awesome bike :) For the real beginners, do comment me if you are looking for a short distance

Can use MTB for the distance?
There are people doing it on cheaper foldies.. so a basic MTB should not be a problem if put mind to it
