@@rozu7772 She's great, she _wants_ to eat the sun, but she needs to be strong enough to pull it off, so she eats nightmares- *All of them* , including those of the Gods, Beholders, etc. So to stop her stockpiling so many nightmares that she acquires sufficient power the Gods have holy crusades sent into the Far Realms after her every few centuries.
The catch is, they aren't allowed to kill her. Not that they likely could, but if they did then every nightmare that's stored in her body at the time would return to the being whose mind she ate it from, causing them to remember vividly. And given that list includes bad dreams from potentially any/ all thinking being that's ever had to sleep, the mania that has the potential to cause is _also_ world ending.
So they can't actually eliminate her threat, so they just chip away at her and force her to metabolise some of the nightmares to recover from the scratches or whatever, the goal being to keep her from ever getting enough nightmares at a given time by basically mugging her (replace "nightmares" with "money" it's an easy parallel) on a somewhat regular basis.

They absolutely do, we humans just aren't attuned to read them (we have trouble reading the emotions of mammals like Cats). Sneks have feelings, yo.
On the other hand, I do love Conan-style snake cultists, because Genre Convention. They make for great villains, making them useful to DMs. And it lets me have the Followers of Set from Vampire: The Masquerade, but in DnD.
Suffice to say, my feelings toward the Yuan-ti are complex. What I'd prefer is that Yuan-ti be perfectly emotional, and they're so often evil because they have fucked-up ethics and are willing to sacrifice anything and anyone for power. A perfectly human quality, if there ever was one. You don't see sneks in real life doing things like ritual murder, torture, or corporate raiding.

Honestly, as worn out tired and old as it is, this is your game to rework to your liking. Just because it's useful convention to have them be emotionless murderers and liars does not mean you must subscribe to that view of them. Personally, as villains, I find it would be more useful if some did have emotions and others are so traumatized from their environment that they have let go of having them. It is even useful as a player who wants to play a Yuan-Ti confront their culture and ethics when faced with another viewpoint than just "am snake person must sacrifice." Regardless, use your interpretation of them. It will be much more useful for you and your players and make the game more engaging for all.

Just to clarify, human sacrifice in the Aztec confederation (and, indeed, the wider Nahuatl cultures of the period) did not merely sacrifice anyone that they could find, nor did they do so as a punishment or as appeasement. Rather, these peoples specifically only sacrificed volunteers and prisoners of war, which influenced their warfare strategies, development of weaponry, military promotions, and foreign affairs.
The reason for this (at least, for the primary god of the Mexica/Aztec) was as follows: they believed that their sun/war god, Huitzilopochtli, protected them against the Tzitzimimeh, monstrous, man-eating sky-skeletons (the stars), that they believed attacked Huitzilopochtli at night and during eclipses (which is why you can't see the sun then). While Huitzilopochtli was mighty, his sacrifices (and, indeed, the sacrifices of all the other gods of the cosmos) could not be maintained indefinitely - and so, this is where the sacrifices come in. By giving him the strength and sustenance of mortal warriors regularly, they gave Huitzilopochtli nourishment, allowing him to fend off the Tzitzimimeh for a while longer and stave off the end of humanity.
This was such a widespread practice that the Aztec confederacy and their regional rivals/enemies deliberately partook in regular, ritualized warfare at special locations (called a "Flower War" or "Xochiyoyotl"), to ensure that everyone would have enough sacrifices to do their part in giving back to the gods that sacrificed constantly for their sake.
Also, fun fact: Tzitzimimeh were also worshipped and invoked as patron deities of midwives, fertility, and as protectors of the feminine.

So watching this video back to back from the Kuo-Toa one made me think a cool campaign idea from the "villan plot" side of things could be a Yuan-Ti tribe(?) happening across a village of Kuo-Toa and learning of their ability to create gods, and the Abomination leading that group of Yuan-Ti decides to try to use the Kuo-Toa as a means to attain godhood for themselves. So the Yuan-Ti are being as friendly as they can bring themselves to pretend to be, offering protection, basically proposing on paper really good deals to the Kuo-Toa to get them on side, coexisting, so that they can use their god making powers to their own benefit. They're even building the Kuo-Toa population up, bringing more in from other areas under this promise of protection, so as to increase the strength of their collective worship. The Yuan-Ti being so silver tongued, not openly hostile, and making an effort to at minimum be seen to be keeping their promises to the Kuo-Toa would lead the latter to trust them, unwittingly allowing themselves to be used almost as slaves without realising it.
The PC side of this I guess would be to neutralise the Yuan-Ti threat that's building up, with a "good" party trying to do so without too greatly destablising the Kuo-Toa society that's been built up around them. Kuo-Toa would push back because on the face of it, they have a legitimately good thing going on with the Yuan-Ti, it's just horribly one sided and selfish when actually looking at the latters motives, so there's room for a socio-political angle for how the conflict is handled. As for how the PC's would find out, I think hearing about how there's been an unusual amount of Kuo-Toa activity lately, and/ or that they seem to be gathering together would be a fair opening lead.

Ok the Aztecs get a bad reputation but the Snake god that most people know the Aztecs for worshiping Quetzalcoatl the Feathered Serpent was actually opposed to the practice of human sacrafice and had a deep love for humans who he would do anything for. According to Aztec mythology Quetzalcoatl is the creator and father of humanity who sacrificed his own blood in order to give us life. When he saw humans needed food he journeyed into the Mountain of Food and brought us corn and taught us how to farm. When the Sun God Tonatiuh hoarded all music, arts, and Cocoa beans in his sun palace like a jerk Quetzalcoatl snuck in and stole it from him to give to the humans, and now we have chocolate because Snek Dad decided we deserved the Gods' favorite bean.
Remember there's a big fluffy snek dad in the sky who just wants to boop your snoot, feed you chocolate and tell you he's proud of you. And that's basically Quetzalcoatl.

Eberron, a D&D campaign setting, has good-aligned yuan-ti called the shulassakar, who are connected to serpentine celestials called the couatls. The shulassakar are divided into bloodsworn (≈ pureblood), flametouched (≈ malisons) and transcendent (≈ abominations). They possess feathers and sometimes wings. In other settings, the couatls were created by a primordial deity called Jazirian, who is D&D's version of Quetzalcoatl.

    • @Bysthedragon
      @Bysthedragon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes, that is one of the reasons they sacrificed for. They believed that the Earth was made from the corpse of a primal sea monster who's still somewhat alive and eternally hungry so periodically they would have to sate it's hunger with blood.
There is also the Sun God Huitzilopochtli who because Tonatiuh was an asshole and bad at his job Huitzilopochtli gave him the boot and took over as the God of the Sun, carrying the sun around the sky to keep it from being destroyed by the Moon and Stars, they thought a Solar Eclipse was the Moon attacking the Sun so to keep up Huitzilopochtli's strength they would offer him blood and human hearts, however if you were a sacrafice, warrior who fell in battle, or a mother who died in childbirth you would be reborn as a Hummingbird.

They were abandoned by their Sneople soon after birth to be fed to a Snake Pit but Adventurers charged in before they could be sacrificed and one of them adopted her since they were just born. Since then, they’ve grown up around a fairly normal society and have become a fairly normal but quirky person. They have some magic, have a little fun with her snake arms (which are named L and R), and growing up with a Bard for a parent have them a love of hijinks and stories plus she eats with her arm mouths. she’s mostly meant to be comic relief and just an excuse to have a cute snake girl in game. Statistically they’d basically be a Yuan Ti Malison Type 2 with some minor tweaks.

Since real world snakes never take more than they need and have a live and let live mentality I'm guessing that the sociopathy may have come from the snake side (since snakes don't really socialize) but the evil definitely came from the human side.
Good humans would've worshipped the cuddly Boop Noodles instead of Senior Noms

Wait...one of their God's is named Sseth? Does that mean whenever he's summoned, he says, "Hey, hey, people. Sseth here."
    I'll see myself out...

The idea of a snake with guys for arms is horrifying, and I love it. Can’t wait to use that eldritch abomination for something.

If monster girl quest has taught me anything it’s that noodles are dangerous.

    Loki: cool
    Yuan-ti: cowards, honorless
people should stop reasoning with their genitals, and start thinking what really matters to them.

Yuan-ti always make for...interesting...encounters. The Fane of the Night Serpent is a fun place to play with them, though it's funny that both the yuan-ti and mindflayers had empires they lost due to uprisings. Almost like a weird trend :x

There should be a Yuan-ti Malison variant which is just that thing Orochimaru did where he stretched out his neck and a snake came out of his mouth and then a super long sword came out of the snake’s mouth

Does anyone remember the Vasharan from Book of Vile Darkness 3.5? The race descended from the absolute first prototype for mankind that was utterly cruel and hated the gods so much they were militant atheists who stole power from them rather than pray to them via the Ur-Priest prestige class?
That whole "they don't really believe in their gods" thing deffos reminds me of them and their whole deal.
