In this video, I construct pteruges from leather and bronze. Pteruges are traditionally multilayered linen strips that hang down from a hoplites belt, forming a protective yet highly mobile skirt for hips and thighs.
I decided to make my strips from a heavy strap leather. At the tips of each strip, i constructed bronze "fobs" or decorative end caps. These are decorative but also help weigh down the leather strips and prevent them from curling up. The bronze caps were formed over a simple steel "positive" being clamped to this then lightly hammered to take its shape. After rivetting together, the strips were then hand-stitched to a wide leather belt.
The same process was used to create a gorget, or neckpiece, to which shoulder strips were fastened

Great work. I'm always amazed how good your weathered bronze looks after blueing and buffing. I liked the distressed leather process too. Have a great holiday.

A great build! Pteryges means ''wings''. While I love the rule of cool in your panoplia, I would like to see you building a super historicaly accurate one.

    • @jaredtrainor6860

Idk, seems as historically accurate as you can get to me. Its not like there are full surviving examples for one, and 2 many times warriors personalize there armor anyways.

@@jaredtrainor6860 in fact there are full corridors of surviving armours and helmets and the metal parts of shields if you ever visit the museum in Olympia. There's even a helmet belonging to Miltiades. He dedicated it to Zeus and there is an inscriprion carved on it.

Good work Thak, that seemed tedious to make.
My only concerns are that the gap between each of the pteruges is a bit large which is a liability for protection and the bronze tips dont seem very comfortable when moving around, thankfully i doubt ull be doing any fighting or marching in these : D
Hope it turns out looking good.

Not entirely sure if this style of armor was designed around providing ample ventilation of the private parts, or quick, and easy toilet brakes, while on the march. In either case I bet medieval knights were worse off in both regards.
