@James Paterson One of the worst parts of the clearences but less well known(which incidentally added to the number of traveller families)was that soldiers coming back from the Crimea and other military service came back to find their families scattered and their homes burned

@@stephenreynolds3079 I would suggest the book"The Highland Clearances"by John Prebble the book is flawed in parts but is quite correct in it's basics. Given the people involved there is little recorded by the victims or the perpetrators
@@davidmcintyre8145 Ok thanks. I read the book "for the peoples cause" about John Murdoch the crofters champion. It covered some of the themes of the clearances but I have not read the Prebble book.
@@stephenreynolds3079 The big problem with that period is that many of the people were illiterate and the history is oral,the authorities on the other hand don't want their dirty laundry aired.This is why even now for instance all government documents relating to the Skye bridge campaign are under a 100 year rule
So that's the best the Scottish Tories could come up with, following on from their acting leader, a used car salesman who apparently bankrupted every business he ever set foot in. What a result for the SNP!.
DRoss is that much of a "leader" he is trying to get elected to Holyrood through the back door by standing as a list candidate; he doesn't have the balls, confidence, call it what you want, to stand as a constituency candidate. If elected he will have a dual mandate and have duties as an MP (supposedly based in Westminster) and as an MSP (supposedly based in Holyrood), neither of which can have his full attention as they are 400 miles apart. By doing this he is devaluing, and showing his contempt for, Scottish democracy.

Couldn’t agree more. There’s an obvious reason he’s only choosing to stand on the regional list and not to be elected in Moray: he knows he’d be held to account for his atrocious views.

@@peastong He is trying to be an MSP and an MP, yeah, but remember in the Holyrood elections there are two votes (producing two 'tiers' of MSPs). instead of standing in Moray to be the local constituency MSP (the constituency he represents at Westminster), the Tories have put him top of the Highlands and Islands regional list vote, which means he will definitely be elected. The parties control the list so its impossible for voters to be able to choose other Tory candidates above him.

What Douglas Ross said was wrong. The rights and culture of the travelling people in Scotland should be respected. There was I believe some problems at the traveler's site in Elgin several years ago and this may have clouded his judgement.
Live near a traveller community and see if your attitude changes.

I have a questions, and I’m uneducated on the topic so I hope someone can shed some light
Most societies were built by nomadic tribes settling down in one area due to good farmland, fast forward 10k years and now the view of a fair society would be “everyone pays their fair share for the betterment of everyone”.
From my understanding you can’t do that in Britain without an address and a stable job, and complete integration into our society. I welcome the idea of multiple plots of land used as a “traveler circuit” so they can explore our beautiful countryside, but does this not make any nomadic tribes that do not pay their fair share but use public resources a net negative on the country?
I don’t know what they contribute to society is the main crux of the issue, but happy to learn and change my prejudices!

I'm not surprised about this. My Dad's generation (He was Labour then eventually SNP), didn't like gypsies. It was the stereotype of thieving, pulling their kids from school, fly tipping, etc.

I think in fairness this is one of the most Scottish things Douglas Ross could have said. I'd say in general most Scots are decently progressive and welcoming of everyone EXCEPT travellers. One mention of them and you'll get 15 pricks telling you they've had quad bikes stolen by them you'll have another 20 telling you what a mess they make etc. I have great respect for Patrick Harvie. He routinely stand by his principles when it will do him no political favours. His accusation here will win him absolute no votes among the general population despite being completely bang on the money on how much of a complete scumbag Douglas Ross is

Unfortunately Ross has been the representative for my constituency, yet he has never even acknowledged my e-mails to him, let alone actually answering my questions. I guess he's just a bog standard Tory. The travellers are often accused of working in the cash economy and not paying tax.

The only people who think Travelers are victimised are people who've never interacted with them.
I spent years living right across the road from Travelers and interacted with them all the time. I think they deserve respect and to not be discriminated against.

They would obviously rather be on legal sites, without constant annoyance from the police and people like Douglas Ross. The issue is that these "legal" sites are continually shut down, and the communities are rarely given a permanent option or a solution to this never ending problem. Romani people (for example) have been part of our culture since at least the early 1500s yet their way of life is still disrespected and they are discriminated against. Did you actually watch the video?

This is always within the realms of politics. There’s always a party that needs votes that their policies cannot capture. Attacking people that can’t vote against you has always been at the nastiest end of politics, however is yet to be criminalised in the way it should.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Travellers don't mind being called gypsy(despite being unrelated to Romanies) and it was only Romanies who minded. Hence Tyson Fury Gypsy king?
That is not based in fact or, at least, it never used to be a slur. I speak as the son of someone who, for a short while, was secretary to the Gypsy Lore Society. This organisation is now based in the USA.
Gypsy is not a Slur it is who they are. If anything being PC and calling them Travellers is insulting to real Gypsies.

Douglas Ross is a hard man to call out on anything other than racism and as well as seeking to become the leader of the main opposition party in Scotland he also has to be elected as an MSP in order to take a seat in that Parliament. His racist remarks will go down well with his voter base and I'm sorry to say more than a few others including many traditional working class Labour voters. This would play out exactly the same way if he was standing in an English constituency there are very few of us who can claim to be truly without bias. That's the real issue !
