It is like waking up and finding out you never heard of SRV. What a player, what feel he had. I'm watching some of his performances here and I just can't believe what an amazing player he was.
That's because he's more known in Europe for his modern Blues guitar solos and playing, he started out playing rock, and later got back to his roots being influenced by blues guitarist in America, but in the US only those who love blues guitar and music know of him, therefore, only a handful of people ever heard of him. Anybody that plays blues guitar or listens to blues music will tell you they know his music, if you know Joe Bonomassa you'll hear Gary Moores influence on his guitar playing.
I got into a rut a few years ago and hung the strat on the wall. After hearing you on utibe ive got right back into it polishing up my technique basically relearning a few old standards from you ive now gone on and got back playing live with a new band. Andy’s money shot on this tutorial is 7:55 - 12:10. The whole tutorial is worth watching because, well, it’s Andy; his wealth of knowledge and his presentations are beautiful. But I’ve watched this video so many dang times you’d think I could play that speed lick already; but NOOOooo! My arthritic old hands remind me they suck every time I try to do that portion of the solo. The crazy part is - it’s Box 1.....A minor Pentatonic! How many times have we practiced that bloody box to warm up or or dropped into it because we think of anything else to improvise and here Andy lays it out so plainly for us?! Thank you, Andy. I ran across you about a year ago. I watched about a dozen of your videos. I can say with great confidence,YOU have the BEST "Ear" of all on TH-cam. you are a stellar teacher. in addition to teaching well, you instill the fact that note for note reproduction is not necessarily the best idea. much more important to get the feel and the theory behind the solo or song. thanks yet again.
Just saw Moore's playing this at 1997 Montreux Festival and my first thought was I bet Andy could play and teach this. That would be fun with the bending and vibrato techniques that create such feel. I actually learned the majority of this tune from one or two other TH-camrs, and came across your video only now, and I am using this vid to focus on (as you said) the fast part of the first, shorter solo. Most of the guitar teachers don't do "old school" lessons like you, where they talk you through the entire song and solos, breaking it down verbally into small, more digestible chunks. Now I am kind of wishing I found this video before already getting the second solo down. lol I have become accustomed to what a lot of the other teachers on here do, which is to SLOW the song down a lot, to make it easier to self-learn, and they also accompany it with real-time tab. To be honest, I am really digging your more "in-person guitar teacher" approach, because it actually makes the harder parts much easier to learn. I also understand why some of the teachers do it the other way, and in some ways it is easier, but for my style of playing and learning, I won't lie; I prefer your way. If you respond, and want to talk about it more, I will explain why. Although, I do understand why some teachers go the Slo-mo teaching with tabs, and no audio commentary. I think that a lot of them know that a huge chunk of their audiences don't speak their native language, and so their way, for them, makes it much easier for a lot of students. One guy in particular I learned the Lukather version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps from, and he is from Italy, and speaks broken English, so his way worked probably better for me than if he had done it your way. Sorry for such a long post, but I wanted to THANK YOU in detail, and not just fire off some one-line, off handed response to the AMAZING job you did.
I'm a guitarist that has instilled myself with using all 4 fingers. I see a lot of blues players, especially Clapton neglect his pinky. One of my influences is Steve Howe. I can stretch pretty good. I was watching a Michael Schenker improvised bunch of solos done on the spot during an interview. At times in a pentatonic position he uses his index finger and middle finger a whole step apart. And as he moves to the B and E string. He'll use his third finger 2 whole steps apart or if you like? I can say 4 frets apart. I can see what it does when applying a fast hard attack. But I'm getting back into the swing of things and from what I recall, I can get the same results with my pinky. But I will try both and if I think the Schenker attack comes across with more ferocity? Than I will try implementing that technique at certain times as long as I keep using my pinky like I said before. In other words, I still want to apply my pinky as in using all of my fingers as a general rule. When I was jamming with a progressive bass player one night way back when. Just me on guitar and him on bass. We improvised some Jazz type fusion. I didn't know he had a metronome on and after about 5 minutes of us playing, we stopped. And he's heard me shred with the right player's before. He said "That's pretty good. "You averaged around 160 notes a minute. I was like, WHOA! THAT'S 2 AND A HALF NOTES A SECOND! But not everything is about speed.

Outstanding tutorial - your description of Gary being so emotive - melodic and yet blistering is spot on. I have always thought of him as being a mixture of the melodic beauty of Carlos Santana and shred of early Eddie Van Halen. Blister he can - on some of his earlier albums, I am not sure I have ever heard such astounding speed.
Your lessons are just brilliant and your tone and ability...wow! I think part of Gary Moore`s uniqueness comes partly from the fact he was left-handed and yet taught himself to play right-handed.
FINALLY...Someone who can play this tune and get the tone right all at the same time. In an interview Gary Moore said one of the reasons he chose to play the guitar was that it allowed him to express in a style that an instrument like the keyboard would not allow. Shut up and play pointed out by showing how "Still Got The Blues" would sound on an instrument without the advantage of bends,vibrato, etc. Really great job. Could you get around to providing a lesson for The Doors 'Spanish Caravan' - with all all the parts? I love this tune and guitar work. And playing it right indeed is a matter of bendings - up bendings, down bendings, full, half, 3 half etc - and vibrato use. Gary was a very master of these techniques, and he had a very own style of this techniques. Also, I never saw a guitar player making such heavy use of the middle finger, stretching it very vary. On contrary, ,most players primarily use first and ring finger.

I always like it when you say "some people play it like this but I hear it like that!" You know what I wish you would do is a clip showing you learning a song you don't know and your approach to breaking down a solo you don't know yet. Maybe a clip showing where the vids are made and your actual phsyical equipment set up, etc. You are in San Diego, right? You are simply the best at doing this stuff on TH-cam.

I enjoy your tutorials, and the fact that you sometimes can't "put it in words"... *feel* is always the biggest part, rather than technicality. Keep up the good work. I've often found that watching the original guitar player gives me more insights that any "TAB" or explanations, and I try to inhabit the way that the original was expressed. Whilst it can be fun, or a challenge, to exactly reproduce a part, sometimes mimicking the groove is more honest and communicative. But I'm not going left-handed to play Jimi .... ;-)

AWESOME tutorial, as usual ! WOW I never knew Gary Moore often used only 2 fingers. Due to an old injury in which nerves in my pinky and ring finger were damaged causing them to cramp up when stressed, although I always wished I could, I never thought I'd be able to learn how to play guitar. The pinky is real bad and practically useless. The ring finger is a little bit better depending on the angle and intensity. 8 years ago, when I turned 50, after seeing a very inspiring Django Reinhardt documentary, I decided to try and see how far I could get with my handicap and started following You Tube beginners lessons. Any time I'd cross chords, riffs or other techniques that caused me problems I'd try and figure out mostly 2 finger solutions and/or other ways that spare my, pinky and ring finger. For example can't play barre chords so I developed a variation of Hendrix style chords in which I fret 2 strings (A and D ) both with my ring finger. Hardly ever use the low E but if necessary I'll play it with my thumb. When I show my chord technique to other guitarists they always look at me as if I escaped from area 51 lol. But it works for me ! I would never dare say I'm a great guitar player but after many many hours of practice I started to be able to manage pretty well, even to the degree that I could join a band, which is a lot of fun. And a few years ( and hundreds of hours practice ) after that I even started my own Santana Tribute band in which I play lead. So I'm playing Carlos's solo's mostly with 2 fingers lol. The moral of the story is : if you REALLY REALLY want to learn how to play, just DO IT ! Practice hard and never give up ! And like Andy here says, don't worry if you develop you're own personal techniques, hacks and shortcuts. IF IT WORKS IT WORKS. You may not become a Steve Vai 2.0.......but you still can have great fun !
Nice tutorial wow! I couldn't believe I could play it but I did and it sounded great, I Hooked up my Jazzmaster and I cranked up my line six amp about half way with a ton of Delay and tap echo then turned the volume lower on my JM and it sounds freakin awesome ! Thanks for the Lesson.

I saw this vid I I was like "damn, didn't hear that in a long time". And then I heard your presentation and like the first 5 notes and got the rest (except the fast part) from memory. And it really isn't hard to play if you how its supposed to sound. I'm never like "i need to get a D out of this bending", I'm like "just a little higher, aaaah, thats perfect". I play in a way it sounds right to me and dont really care if its 100% accurate.
Very nice and fairly easy to follow. I have the same exact wine color LP it's a pro 11 standard 2012. Definitely my favorite ax next to my '77 custom. Ok now I'm showing off lol thanks!
And I thought that I would mention the people who were and still influence my playing. Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Michael Schenker, Al Di Meola, Rik Emmett, Trevor Rabin, ? Guitarists that didn't usually use vibrato bars. Oh and I like Randy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde. They didn't really use vibrato bars either. I don't think they've used them at all. On the song "Over the Mountain. Rhoads is playing his Les Paul and pulling off the string and with his right hand reaching behind his left and pulling up and down on the string while he's doing the pull off with his left. Now that's what I'm talking about!

Awesome lesson (& playing). I just spent the last couple weeks watching (& learning) your video lessons on the intro and main solos of the Scorps "No One Like You" and the last part of this intro solo to "Still Got the Blues" is actually very similar to the intro solo of NOLY. And thus it made picking up this SGTB intro solo much easier. ;-) Anyway, thanks for taking the time to do this... I absolutely love Gary Moore and the guitar work on SGTB is some of my favorite of his. Hope you get a chance to do a lesson for the main/ending solo some day. :)

I think part of Gary Moore`s uniqueness comes partly from the fact he was left-handed and yet taught himself to play right-handed.

FINALLY...Someone who can play this tune and get the tone right all at the same time. In an interview Gary Moore said one of the reasons he chose to play the guitar was that it allowed him to express in a style that an instrument like the keyboard would not allow. Shut up and play pointed out by showing how "Still Got The Blues" would sound on an instrument without the advantage of bends,vibrato, etc. Really great job. Great lesson! Gary moore is a truly legend. It looks like all the legends die early though. But an another great song of him is reach for the sky..There are no any lessons or covers from it. Mabey you can make a lesson of it? That would be great ;)

I love this tune and guitar work. And playing it right indeed is a matter of bendings - up bendings, down bendings, full, half, 3 half etc - and vibrato use. Gary was a very master of these techniques, and he had a very own style of this techniques. Also, I never saw a guitar player making such heavy use of the middle finger, stretching it very vary. On contrary, ,most players primarily use first and ring finger.

Great Lesson shutup. Love the chit chat. I find it actually helps the lesson process and its great to hear your thoughts on players and their technique. I always like it when you say "some people play it like this but I hear it like that!" You know what I wish you would do is a clip showing you learning a song you don't know and your approach to breaking down a solo you don't know yet. Maybe a clip showing where the vids are made and your actual phsyical equipment set up, etc. You are in San Diego, right? You are simply the best at doing this stuff on TH-cam.

I enjoy your tutorials, and the fact that you sometimes can't "put it in words"... *feel* is always the biggest part, rather than technicality. Keep up the good work. I've often found that watching the original guitar player gives me more insights that any "TAB" or explanations, and I try to inhabit the way that the original was expressed. Whilst it can be fun, or a challenge, to exactly reproduce a part, sometimes mimicking the groove is more honest and communicative. But I'm not going left-handed to play Jimi .... ;-)

WOW I never knew Gary Moore often used only 2 fingers. Due to an old injury in which nerves in my pinky and ring finger were damaged causing them to cramp up when stressed, although I always wished I could, I never thought I'd be able to learn how to play guitar. The pinky is real bad and practically useless. The ring finger is a little bit better depending on the angle and intensity.
8 years ago, when I turned 50, after seeing a very inspiring Django Reinhardt documentary, I decided to try and see how far I could get with my handicap and started following You Tube beginners lessons. Any time I'd cross chords, riffs or other techniques that caused me problems I'd try and figure out mostly 2 finger solutions and/or other ways that spare my, pinky and ring finger.
For example can't play barre chords so I developed a variation of Hendrix style chords in which I fret 2 strings (A and D ) both with my ring finger. Hardly ever use the low E but if necessary I'll play it with my thumb. When I show my chord technique to other guitarists they always look at me as if I escaped from area 51 lol. But it works for me !
I would never dare say I'm a great guitar player but after many many hours of practice I started to be able to manage pretty well, even to the degree that I could join a band, which is a lot of fun. And a few years ( and hundreds of hours practice ) after that I even started my own Santana Tribute band in which I play lead. So I'm playing Carlos's solo's mostly with 2 fingers lol. The moral of the story is :
if you REALLY REALLY want to learn how to play, just DO IT ! Practice hard and never give up ! And like Andy here says, don't worry if you develop you're own personal techniques, hacks and shortcuts. IF IT WORKS IT WORKS. You may not become a Steve Vai 2.0.......but you still can have great fun !

Nice tutorial wow! I couldn't believe I could play it but I did and it sounded great, I Hooked up my Jazzmaster and I cranked up my line six amp about half way with a ton of Delay and tap echo then turned the volume lower on my JM and it sounds freakin awesome ! Thanks for the Lesson.
Gary had an incredible touch when he played he put 100% of his heart and soul into ieach Note the listner was always left in awe.every time. You know we he got to heaven first thing saId was ....Well done Gary..

Another great lesson there from you, by a guitar hero of mine , Gary Moore R.I.P , but i was completely distracted by your broken pickup surround on your Les Paul. I saw this vid I I was like "damn, didn't hear that in a long time". And then I heard your presentation and like the first 5 notes and got the rest (except the fast part) from memory. And it really isn't hard to play if you how its supposed to sound.
I'm never like "i need to get a D out of this bending", I'm like "just a little higher, aaaah, thats perfect". I play in a way it sounds right to me and dont really care if its 100% accurate.

Very nice and fairly easy to follow. I have the same exact wine color LP it's a pro 11 standard 2012. Definitely my favorite ax next to my '77 custom. Ok now I'm showing off lol thanks!
And I thought that I would mention the people who were and still influence my playing. Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Michael Schenker, Al Di Meola, Rik Emmett, Trevor Rabin, ? Guitarists that didn't usually use vibrato bars. Oh and I like Randy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde. They didn't really use vibrato bars either. I don't think they've used them at all. On the song "Over the Mountain. Rhoads is playing his Les Paul and pulling off the string and with his right hand reaching behind his left and pulling up and down on the string while he's doing the pull off with his left.
Now that's what I'm talking about!

Awesome lesson (& playing). I just spent the last couple weeks watching (& learning) your video lessons on the intro and main solos of the Scorps "No One Like You" and the last part of this intro solo to "Still Got the Blues" is actually very similar to the intro solo of NOLY. And thus it made picking up this SGTB intro solo much easier. ;-) Anyway, thanks for taking the time to do this... I absolutely love Gary Moore and the guitar work on SGTB is some of my favorite of his. Hope you get a chance to do a lesson for the main/ending solo some day. :)
