The dynamics and chemistry between characters is huge in how watchable a show is. In a show with several great characters who had chemistry, Coach and Matt are one of the best.

I like to think coach and matt enjoy beers together and laugh about the old times when coach would give matt a hard time over julie. Whilst his grandkids are running around with a football.

@@shad3115 I always imagined that Coach Taylor finally got a college gig with his wife's blessing. He brings back Saracen to be his offensive Coordinator, and Riggs to be the DC. I would love to see it. Have them go through the recruiting stages, mentoring kids. Would be great TV IMO.
Lol Riggins was a full back. He isn’t a DC though I know he played some defense in the series but he is a fullback through and through.

There's a scene I've looked for and never found. Matt at the Taylor front door, stuttering and stammering, trying to ask for Julie. Every time he's about to get an intelligible word out, coach goes, 'What?' in that aggravated, domineering tone of his. Beautiful encapsulation of both characters.
That's season 5 episode 13 in the first 5mins at the start of the episode. Tami says "She sure is Julie" since Matt kept stammering at her name .
I just think about how Matt was such a lost child, and he had a rough upbringing, and he had this dynamic with his coach/ gf’s dad

@@nopeteys2424 yep them three carried the show, Riggins being a badass it’s a soft heart, Matt being a good guy who just can’t seem to catch a break and Coach who keeps them in line and keep them good men.

I understand why taylor hates on saracen a lot with the Julie situation but he knows matts background he knows his life revolves around taking care of his grandma he knows he goes to school and works to pay the bills so cut the kid some slack

I just got done with the show and I never got the feeling of coach being a father like character to Matt. Throughout the show he was nothing but mean to Matt and occasionally nice. I always felt he was more of a father to Vince and Tim than he ever was Matt
Matt was the only one dating his daughter, so there’s a unique dynamic there. I thought he displayed a lot of care and trust in Matt over the years.
Saracen had a confidence problem, couch gave him the tough love he needed to believe in himself, riggins and Vince didnt need that, they just need to be pulled in line every now and then, its shows how great the coach was, he knew had to work each kid from different angles
