I Know What You Did Last Summer:
A year after running over a fisherman and dumping his body in the water, four friends reconvene when Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) receives a frightening letter telling her that their crime was seen. While pursuing who he thinks is responsible for the letter, Barry (Ryan Phillippe) is run over by a man with a meat hook. The bloodletting only increases from there, as the killer with the hook continues to stalk Julie, Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.).
I Know What You Did Last Summer is a 1997 American slasher film directed by Jim Gillespie, written by Kevin Williamson, and starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr. It is loosely based on the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan and is the first installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise. The film centers on four young friends who are stalked by a hook-wielding killer one year after covering up a car accident in which they supposedly killed a man. The film also draws inspiration from the urban legend known as "The Hook" and the 1980s slasher films Prom Night (1980) and The House on Sorority Row (1982).
Prior to Scream (1996), Williamson was approached to adapt Duncan's source novel by producer Erik Feig. Where Williamson's screenplay for Scream contained prominent elements of satire and self-referentiality, his adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer reworked the novel's central plot to resemble a straightforward 1980s-era slasher film. After the success of Scream, the film was rushed into production.
I Know What You Did Last Summer was released theatrically on October 17, 1997. It received mixed reviews from critics, but was commercially successful, grossing $125.3 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million, and remaining number 1 at the U.S. box office for three consecutive weeks. It was also nominated for and won multiple awards. The movie has also been parodied and referenced in popular culture, and is credited alongside Scream with revitalizing the slasher genre in the 1990s.
The film was followed by a direct sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998), with the main surviving characters returning. Later, a direct-to-video sequel was made called I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006), without featuring any of the original cast. At one point, a remake was planned. In 2021, a television series was released. As of 2023, a legacy sequel is in the works.

Helen's chase scene has to be one of the most intense cat and mouse sequences in horror movie history, right next to "Scream 2" with Gale. The outcome is so heartbreaking, yet poetic because it's the reason we remember it. Sarah Michelle Gellar went down fighting.
Also, "The Faculty" (1998) also written by Kevin Williamson, definitely need to check that out too because I know you will love it.

One of my favorite horror Halloween movies. Fun fact: Sarah Michelle gellar and Freddie prince jr met doing this movie and they are still married today. I believe they have a couple of kids.
I really would've liked to have seen Helen survive. Her whole chase scene was amazing, in that it showed she was more than the dumb vain blonde. And her death was so avoidable and frustrating. She was this close to escaping with plenty of witnesses.

In the original script Helen survived the chase scene & got the police attention during the parade they studio wanted more blood so they reshot the chase scene and made her look back and hesitate & Max ended up getting Ray’s intended death scene because Johnny Galecki was filming Roseanne which resulted in majority of Max’s scenes getting cut he was supposed to be the red harring throughout the whole movie

@@notyouraveragebear9326 Yes Ray was intended to die the first half & Max was intended to Survive but because of Johnny Galecki schedule with Roseanne they had to swap Max & Ray storyline & kill him off halfway through production & reshoot the scenes with Freddie to fit Ray into the storyline. Majority of Max scenes got cut & well as Elsa original death scene Elsa originally gets killed off by Max he hears footsteps and stabs her neck thinking she’s the Fisherman

One of the best horror sequels ever made
Because Hewitt and Gellar were it girls at the moment.
What makes Helen's death scene even more heartbreaking is that Buffy the Vampire Slayer had been released and we were used to seeing SMG kickass. So to see her here, getting chased down and brutally murdered in an alley was awful.

This was a book originally by an author named Lois Duncan. She also wrote Hotel for Dogs and a very intense investigation on the IRL murder of her daughter. She's always been a very popular author so that did help with the popularity of the film adaption.
She didn't like that they made her book into a slasher movie, though. She always criticized the movie for not being what she wrote
I still play this movie in the background when I’m cleaning or sleeping in and out once in awhile. It’s just that comfort of a classic thriller that reminds me when it came out and I was a kid and was then sold lol. It just has all of the elements you need and I love the sequel. I don't recommend sex on the beach. You get sand in places you didn't know you had and the sand stays in your hair for weeks. You'd think the blanket would help against that, but it doesn't. I do recommend HEARTBREAKERS starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sigourney Weaver - so entertaining, it's a wild ride!

Please Please PLEEEEASE watch “I still know what you did last summer.” Just like “Jeepers Creepers 2,” the sequel is not as iconic and greatly written or taken as seriously as the original BUT it’s a lot of fun. Cheesy at times but it’s definitely more fun and self aware of itself. It’s overly dramatic on purpose to the point where you just laugh with it and enjoy the ride. I love it. Plus, my girl Brandy is in it❤❤❤❤

This movie was mostly a hit due to the popylarity of Scream, which was written by Kevin Williamson, who also wrote this film. The hot young cast likely helped.
So glad to see your reaction on this one! Another one I recommend you seeing that similar to this and Scream, is Urban Legend. I’d also be very curious to see how many of those those urban legends you are familiar with. I think the person who ended up directing that movie originally tried to direct this one but lost out to and more experience Director. I remember watching Urban Legend so much growing up.

When IKWYDLS came out we didnt have it in HD or Bluray so we couldnt really see all the details that you could see, with the killer being an older man. We thought it someone who knew David Eagan the whole time.

i actually saw 'i still know what you did last summer' before this one and got really into it (i was also obsessed with brandy). i think there are a couple more movies in this series but i really dont remember the plot haha excited to watch with you!

The crazy thing about this film is that it's based on an actual novel of the same name. And it's completely different than the movie. Fun fact: the "WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR" was actually added into the script by a kid. No Lie.

The movie was filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina and they're meant to be in North Carolina in the film as well. Missy just lives much more in the boonies lol. Barry and Julie both go school in Boston. Ray and Helen initially go to New York for school/work.

You should consider watching the underrated slasher film Valentine(2001). It has a...surprising twist, or at least surprising at the time.
Also, The Covenant(2006) was an odd supernatural film but it had an interesting concept.

This movie is basically the typical 90s serial killer movie. They found the typical 90s beauties in a scary movie that followed the Scream wave.

For me, the Helen’s Chase Scene is the MOST iconic chase scene of all the slasher movies, EVER. Sarah Michelle stole the starring role from Jennifer Love Hewiet, that’s all. I love this movie so much.
Yes, you notice once again that the new and the old era are very different. I became aware of the film back then because I was a big fan of the composer John Debney and was also raving about Sarah Michelle Gellar at the time. Well, what do you want to do when you're young? I was 14 when the film came out in 1997. To be honest, I think it's better than Scream 1, about on par with Scream 2 which came out the same year and I like that the killer doesn't strike immediately but waits until the day in question. Are there any logic holes in it? Yes. Bad acting? Actually not, I think everyone does a good job and knows that they won't win an Oscar, but still portrays everything believably. Significantly worse performances have also been seen from films that are overly praised.
Thing is, it's based on a book by teen horror/suspense author Lois Duncan. However, it's nothing like the book other than the four main characters running someone over. In the book, it's a child. The author was not happy with the movie because it became a slasher. She wasn't a fan of that became her own daughter had been brutally murdered in the '80s, but no kill was ever arrested... until a few years ago, after the author died. But if the movie hadn't been a slasher, it probably wouldn't have been as big a hit as it was. Also, Scream had reinvigorated the slasher subgenre, and so that helped this movie do very well.
I loved her books as a teenager. I totally understand why she didn’t feel like writing any more of those type of stories after what happened to her daughter. 😢
Please watch "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer". Dont worry about a movie that (basically) doesnt and shouldnt exist called "Ill Always Know What You Did Last Summer" but the second movie is a gem and IMO better than the first

I watch IKWYDLS 1&2 every spooky season such a classic. The acting isn't all that great but it's kinda camp and it's a comfort movie 😊 #2 is ok but still a nice October watch
