    To be honest, you don't need to be brainwashed or desensitized in order to kill someone. A lot of soldiers sent to a war zone for the first time aren't ready to kill and secretly don't think they can kill. But as soon as you hear bullets whizzing past your ear or someone detonates 100 pounds of explosives next to your vehicle, the decision is made for you. It's instinctual to defend yourself. Basically, the military puts trained men in a dangerous situation, knowing that they will have to defend themselves and kill the opposing side. Do this enough times and it's called a war.

I have six children and 16 grandchildren. When I was diagnosed with PTSD one of the first things I did was call my children and their mothers and make amends (as the term is used in a 12 step program). I would have done anything to not have them grow up with the specter looming over us. One of my children is still on active duty. There has got to be a better way to do this. I enjoy it when they find civil people with opposing points of view. When the older man was talking about his group that has been meeting since 9/11 you can tell the veterans were impressed and wanted to hear his point of view. On the other side, when the Veterans talked about knowing people who died in combat the opposing point of view listened and understood what they were saying and why they did what they did. This is a perfect example of two groups of people with opposing viewpoints who were listening and wanted to learn and what the other group had to say.

I know plenty more who joined because they had no options including me. As far as pay goes yeah the pay isn't great but it's free food, housing, healthcare and it gives a way to get educated once you move on. If you have no options then it's definitely a way to improve your life and take care of your family if you have one.

    • @Calvan42
      @Calvan42 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was going to join the military, because I was on the verge of becoming homeless and I couldn’t. I was told I couldn’t cause I was int he muddle of a divorce and going through child custody battles. I lost my home, because I didn’t want my daughter to be homeless I let my ex have custody of her, because I had no family in the area to get help from or fall back on while I get things in order. Years later I realized how bad it would have been for me to be int he military, i already have Complex-PTSD and being there would have put me through a world of hell and likely mess me up further.. but I didn’t go and I still was met with hard times, more traumatic experiences, losing almost everything I own three times in my life. I look back and wonder if being in the military then would have saved me from Financial disparity and homeless, but that train off as a 6 foot tall woman who later found themselves Gender fluid, being in the military may have been more damaging, it might have been more helpful in other ways, but knowing I could be put in places and situation that would make me have to pull a trigger and take a life would have likely been the straw that broke the camels back and I would have eventually become another statistic for veterans who commit suicide.. leaving my daughter even more without a mother if I didn’t die on the battle field.. I have been torn at the thought of joining for years, mostly cause the thought of traveling around the world when I don’t have the means to do so and the thought of getting a college education when I don’t have the means to do so sounds increasingly appealing, but is it at all worth it when your psychological health is also on the line.. the think about PTSD is that weather it’s domestic or from war. We both understand how it feels. I’ve been able to talk to veterans and I describe what mine is like and they say it’s the same for them, the feeling, the triggers, it’s the fear and it floods the whole system and in a single moment we both get each other and I see this look on their face that says “they understand” and “I’m not alone in this” another reason I think it’s important for people to realize the impact of war isn’t just in the moment, but everlasting. Any veteran will have a hard time admitting there is something wrong, but every time I open up about my PTSD, they ask what war I was in and I tell them it was childhood and adulthood trauma or i short hand it with “it’s domestic” and right away they understand I didn’t get mine from war, but that doesn’t mean I won’t understand how being triggered feels or how terrible flash backs are or getting nightmares and not being able to sleep for fear of.. sometimes fear itself. My military friend never felt comfortable unless he could do a reconnaissance of the space he was in and if he hears a noise he feels the need to check it out. He would apologize every single time he did and I told him that it was okay and if he felt the need to check then he was free to do so if it made him feel more comfortable and safe. He always appreciated me for giving him that freedom and letting him know that I would never judge him for that. Veterans need that understanding, they need that freedom to check around corners and make sure the parameter is safe. It’s how they know they’re safe and a war takes the feeling of safety away from you for a very long time, making it hard to relax almost at all.

      True, but it's "impractical". Say a group of guerrilla warfare guys are fighting to get food for their families. They blow up the gov't buildings, expecting to liberate the country to obtain resources. They gov't counters calling them terrorists.
      Say, they stop and have a meeting of the minds. Tables turn south, which leads to someone official getting assassinated. War continues.
      Another way to look at this. Say people hate their gov't. Do peaceful protest. The gov't isn't trying to make changes. They get people to change the protestors minds from the inside. They eventually split up.
      Another way, say a group of people talk on the internet and really get something started, similar to "Occupy Wall Street", and they make solid changes. But people nonaffiliated with the group say what they're doing is wrong or "evil". Now, a group of "anti-supporters" forms up to suppress this order.
      Either way you slice it, their will never be "world peace". Just do what you can for your neck of the woods. If people see a pattern and money-making situation (similar to the birth of the internet/Declaration of Independence) they'll follow the path of less resistance.

      A lot of veterans don't want to kill the children! They are killing kids, and that is horrible... but it's for a reason. Most of the time, all these kids know is that death doesn't matter, but saying that these men, risking their lives for YOUR freedom, freedom to believe whatever you want, and stuff like that are just doing it for the pay check, you apparently haven't seen how much money they actually get, and it's not much for the danger they Are put through. These men aren't having a field day, no they are fighting, and you are just so ungrateful..

    Getting violent with peaceful, innocent people is an act of barbarism. Getting violent with people who attack innocents is a virtue.
