The house soon so much work that the only people interested in it were the investors who buy homes to renovate and resell. It seems they really believe that the only way to sell it for a good amount just to make it look very modern. So almost certainly they will gut it. Hopefully before that happens we will get out as much of the architectural salvage as possible. It’s really a shame because the ultra modern look will be dated in a decade or so, but that is what the market seems to want right now.

Thank you for taking the time to walk us through this old home. I was a little sad at the intro part when I looked at the wooden knob with all the black build up around it. So many fingers grabbed that knob and left memories of years of use. When I see old pieces like that and bannisters with shadows where lamps stood, I always imagine how someone lived there and passed that light on their way to bed. I think of the stories and it always makes me a little sad to see the state of how things have become. I hope you have lots of people come that fall in love with all these old pieces and lovingly restore them to build their own memories with. Thanks Scott.

Hi, This is Margaret Elizabeth. I see some people are confused and have questions in the comments about the house. I just wanted to make it clear that it is not my house. It is the house where I grew up, but it still belongs to my mother. She is now 94 and came to live with my husband and me several years ago. I moved out of the house in 1989. We now live in New Jersey, in a mid-century split level. We have brought home a lot furniture, artworks, books, linens, all kinds of things from that house. But we already had our own, and some things from my husband’s family, and there is a limit to what we can keep! And I will confess to being more mid century in my tatstes, sorry Scott! I always used to say if I had my dream house it would look a lot like the Brady Bunch! So we couldn’t fit the older pieces into our decor very well. But we definitely do not want them to be destroyed! I want them to go to people who will appreciate them.

Many of these items will get new life in their new homes, but the history of it all is really overpowering. Definitely an element of sadness in the now quiet house, with its layers of dust and now silent rooms. Scott, I know Margaret Elizabeth said you can take what you want, but I do admire the restraint and respect in your voice as you went through the house looking at the treasures. That says a lot about your character. 😸Also, that you thought to send that old clock to me is so thoughtful. Thank you so much, my friend! I only hope I can do it justice! 🙏

Oh my gosh! I wish I could go there!!! What some people see as trash, useless or dare I say it junk, I see as treasures, history and a story. I used to work for this smaller non profit thrift store and we were only to put the best of the best stuff out for sale and I can’t even tell you how much I dug out of our trash and kept (with permission of course)! After awhile my coworkers and even my boss would just keep a lot of stuff and hold it aside to see if I wanted it. A lot of it would be broken or chipped or torn but they knew I would save it 9 times out of 10 😉

Never seen the like really, and I've seen my share of London. I'm curious who lives in these homes today. Are they gutted and flipped or patched up and rented out? It has been sold to a developer and will be renovated and remodeled. Cities like Philadelphia and Baltimore have endless streets with thousands and thousands of row houses built well over 150 years ago. Some are restored and some become remodeled. Architectural salvage companies are usually called to save and resell fireplace surrounds, stained glass and fancy woodwork. The home will have a fresh new look which appeals to some and the lovely old interior decorations will find their way into new or old homes for future generations to love and cherish.

My following statement is generally speaking. Someone in this comment section pointed out the younger generations don't appreciate family heirlooms and antiques, which is very true sadly what is happening. So, I wanted to add to that comment, which I think it's a really important comment. So sorry I created a blog here, LOL! I have to say, I don't understand the younger generations who don't want this stuff. They talk about be sure to recycle because its good for the environment, yet they don't like antiques! There is this huge tsunami that has come, which is the millennial generation and younger generations who hate antiques and collectables. But, ironically, buying antiques is a form of recycling, and those generations supposedly, are much more environmentally conscious than most other generations. Furthermore, antiques are very, very well made becuase years and years ago when they made furniture, it was made to last. Look at these pieces of furniture and other gorgeous pieces in this video that is still standing after over 100 years! People did not use something, and then dumped the piece of furniture or other items away so often or at all. Many, many times as we see here, they used their furniture etc. for a lifetime. Even if the piece or pieces are not in the greatest shape, it's worth restoring and or repairing! Those who stress to recycle, who look out for the welfare of the environment, etc. go out and buy complete crap that you have to assemble, and it breaks down after a point. In addition, the new stuff isn't repairable and or worth repairing or restoring becuase its made with crappy materials not with organic materials. So therefore, there is a greater magnitude of crap going to landfills and polluting the environment. BTW, maybe some millennials might say, well I like clean lines, and the old stuff is too ornate. Ok, go for 1940s furnishings. As a general rule, at least in the 1940s things were still made very well with real wood, and the furnishings are very simple lines. Watch a film from the 1940s and observe their contemporary pieces in offices and homes and you'll see what I'm trying to convey. Or just look through a book on 1940s designs etc. The same goes especially for the 1920s-1930s. Again, basically they are clean lines and well made. Many pieces are very modern looking to the point that some decoctive designs look ahead of their time. The period that is earlier, the Arts and Crafts period around the late 1800s to the 1900s, is another era that had clean lines, but not as MOD as the periods of the 1920s-1940s.

What a lovely home with so much character and charm. Those light fixtures….beautiful. I had no idea I had so many soul siblings who love vintage as I have my entire life. Warms my heart and just makes me smile knowing these treasures find new lives in new homes. Stairway, bathroom fixtures…wow…so many amazing things. Wish I lived closer. I adore old books. And their illustrations. The rope brick on the front facade of the porch is lovely. Just so many wonderful details we no longer see in homes.

I started crying thru this and could not stop. So sad to watch and imagine the family there and the dismantling of this beautiful old home. I hate the way our society thinks all things new. I sure wish I was there. That's all that is done where I live, no preservation, no appreciation of what was. I'm sorry Margaret, but I want you to know I appreciate your family home. Thanks Scott for showing your subs this story.

Ugh....so sad all these treasures and memories collected over the years won't remain with the family. I don't know Elizabeth, but I imagine this must be hard for her. So very generous to open her family home for others to enjoy the items her family has enjoyed for generations. I wish I lived closer!

I recently attended one of these give always, the family had to get everything out by Labor Day, they opened on Friday, and planned to get a dumpster delivered on Saturday. It wasn’t needed. Most everyone that attended helped the family remove all the contents and it took very little time. I was Quite surprised and happy with my take aways. Good luck up there in Philly! From down here in East Texas!

Thank you for highlighting my comment again. Think about how many times people used those buttons in all these years. This house reminds me of the how many people had nothing and grabbed trashy things from the side of the road. Fixed the chair or table up and kept that piece of furniture till they died. Not everyone was able to go to a furniture store and buy new pieces. Family would pass around things they had no use for, and this is how many people got new things. Then flea markets or charity shops were also a good way to find new things for your home. This is what l like to think about, how cities developed and old houses that l could make crazy looking. Thank you again. 👹🎃💚🌹🧿😻👹🎃💚🌹🧿😻👹🎃💚🌹🧿😻👹🎃💚🌹🧿😻👹🎃💚🌹🧿😻👹🎃💚🌹🧿😻👹🎃💚🌹🧿😻👹🎃💚🌹🧿😻👹🎃💚🌹🧿😻👹🎃Hey that dude who used to date Kim K was dyslexic too, he never wrote a single word the whole time he was on SNL.
