    My pit mix is a big friendly baby but instinctively protective at night. He sits watch out the window and makes his rounds around the house b4 he comes to bed. Same thing out camping, he'll sit up watching with his ears perked until he feels it's safe. I'd hate to be the guy breaking into my house or camper and pissing off an 80 pound dog lol

    I would put a bell on the window rope so if anybody tries to get in you will wake up and the noise might scare them away.

      Great idea. I thought of this bell idea if I ever wanted to boondock in my CW "A" tent. Just tie a small bell to the door flap. And have a .38 and flashlight at my bedside. Cheers.

      @@1942Dreamer ...heck with the bell, maybe just tie one end of rope to your well-aimed protection and you won't even have to get up from your warm covers.

    If you want you can get rid of the tail gate latch
    They sell a kit for those low trucks 🛻 that gets rid of the tailgate latch outside and you can put the latch inside .
    So as long as you have a camper shell that opens from the top you can you can go inside and latch it .
    And I’ve seen them having locks from the inside for the wail gate window

  • @stevegabbert9626
    @stevegabbert9626 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Here's the interesting thing, if I'm in my tent I'm not worried about locking anything, but in my truck cap it does concern me. I think it's because the handle is right there for someone to mess with, even if it's just to see if it's locked.

  • @wadewilliston5424
    @wadewilliston5424 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's about the same way I keep my camper shell door locked. In my case I use cambuckle straps (that are used for my kayaks as well) and thread it through a camper shell mount in the back of the camper shell, then pull it tight. Has about the same strength. If I have to go outside to use a bathroom, I just unloosen the cam buckle.

I have a 28 foot tow behind toy hauler but I like how you can go anywheres and have a lot more freedom with truck camping and the cost of campgrounds and even state parks in the east is so damn expensive. Not a bad idea, but, i am going to install a couple of padlock hasps to the inside of the camper door, and, tailgate. I am thinking of replacing the flat glass in the door, with a piece of sheet aluminum about 1/8 of an inch thick, i can paint it out to match the topper color. The side windows are too small for anyone to crawl in, only about 10 inches high. I do not need the back window, i use my mirrors and backup camera to do any parking anyway. It will make the camper area a bit darker, but, i only plan on sleeping there anyway. I have an old classic double 12 guage that i could carry if i was really nervous. I also have a sweet little corgi dog, she is small, but, has a big voice and, is protective of her space.

    If you weld some steel to the door like an L shape and put a piece of steel that stretched right across the window to each side so it can’t be pulled out, something like that, or drill a hole and put some sort of bolt on the window so it can’t open out but put some sort of stopper so the bolt doesn’t drop in when you get out.

I'm thinking of getting a cap and converting the back of my truck into a camper for full-time living, and I just started watching a bunch of builds and got all carried away with thinking about what my setup would be before I realized that I don't know a few basic things like how to lock myself into the back. Also, my tailgate is very heavy; I always open it with two hands and I realized that I may not be able to close it from the inside like you did yours because I can't pull it up with one hand. I just did a test and I couldn't do it. I guess I can close the tailgate from the outside, leave the cap window open, climb in over the tailgate and then close the cap window once I'm inside. That seems to be my only option! Any advice? Thanks!
