DIY log arch

  • Here's my simple DIY ATV Log arch that I built for about $60 with salvaged parts you can find easily. It can be pulled by a ATV, tractor or truck.
Here's a simple way to move logs using a arch, It can be pulled by a ATV, tractor or just about anything, maybe even a team of badgers?
I used a rear trailing arm from a Ford festiva, scrap metal pieces , and built it in about a day. The total cost was about $60.
I used a 1000# boat winch, and the way it uses the log as a pulley,
it lifts at a 2:1 ratio.
I bet you could build it with about any rear cross member from a front wheel drive car, maybe that broken down car on blocks in your back yard?
I'm sure you could spend a lot more money on nicer parts if that's what your into?
Really though I just used parts I had around, and It made moving logs a hell of a lot easier.
What I like about this arch is it lifts the log completely off the ground, keeping dirt and rocks from getting into the bark when moving it to my bandsaw mill.
    Thanks for watching :)

I'm watching a lot of your builds - and you continue to amaze me! This must be one of your simplest builds, but its probably one of your most rewarding as it does the job so well. I like the way you explain your process and thoughts through the builds you do taking the most constructive route. Thanks for them all - and your video work is great too!

Thanks Allan 👍 I really appreciate your comment!
I will be using this log arch with my articulating dump truck a lot this spring, I took down some trees and I will be hauling them to my mill, so I’m sure I will have a video posted soon. Take care

This might be my fav ATV log arch I have found yet in my research. Love how you built it nice and high so you can get the logs right off the ground, but still wide enough to be stable.

Thanks Korey 👍 it turned out pretty good for just using scrap I had sitting around. One suggestion would be to make it a little longer if you plan to haul 12 foot or longer larger logs.

One thing i'd change is i'd make the pulley able to pivot to accommodate for the size of the log at top position. That kind of wear and tear can't be good for the line.
Oh, and i'd angle the wheels with the tops inward just a little, not much. I found that when using tall wheels as opposed to some similar to the ones on your polaris, it helps a lot with stability.
I even saw a guy who made a self angling rig (complicated but the idea was nice) based on the angle of the log vs the pulley. He could take that on a rather steep incline and it would not tip over.

put some skid logs at right angles to the sawmill.
then just roll logs down to the bed.

found your channel from seeing the predator engine in XR100.. looking forward to watching more of what you have done.. any chance of a walk around video on the cool buildings in the back ground.
well done, this tool alone looks simple and works great

Já imaginou que que o seu avó poderia ter fabricado esse Log Arc e o tom hanks ter levado para a Lua na Apollo 13.

Sure saves on the blades if logs cleaner. Great to use the recycled materials for builds.

Definitely 👍 This has held up really well over the years. Makes moving heavy logs quite easy with a four wheeler 🙂

What sawmill is that? That Polaris kind of sounds like it's a 2 stroke. lol. Great video!!!

I built the band sawmill you see in the background, I have a few videos about it, one of my videos shows how I built it.
You got it right the Polaris is a 2 stroke 250 Haha. It seems strange to have a 2 stroke motor in a ATV like that. but there's a lot of strange things about that machine, like it has 4 or 5 drive chains.
I live in the Pacific North West, Washington. Thanks for watching

Mike festiva Oh ok. I was going to say it looks a lot like the harbor freight sawmill. Lol. Wow I was right. I never knew Polaris put 2 stroke motors in their quads. That many drive chains is weird also. Lol. You're welcome.

Polaris 250 big boss 2 stroke I see

    • @Mikefestiva
      @Mikefestiva  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

yes! My friend Dave gave it to me many years ago, When it runs it will go just about anywhere alone with the cloud of two stroke smoke :)
It now needs a bit of my time and money on a few new parts, It's been sitting for the last few years, because of carb issues and in need of some fresh tires. Some day I will resurrect the Big Boss to blow blue smoke once again!!!
      Thanks for watching.

The 6x6 UTV in my video is a 250cc 2 stroke so yes you need to mix the gas, It's a strange motor the be in this machine :)

    I just watched this: th-cam.com/video/ESHgufbfOYk/w-d-xo.html
The best I can say about it is that it's 'heavy duty', but the 'simplicity' of your arch is genius...
