  • An informal video for the novice kimono-owner to wrap, adjust, and wear a kimono and obi combination.
*Please note that, while I have been working with vintage kimono for many years, I have no training in kitsuke (formal kimono dressing) and mean no disrespect to the art of kimono dressing or those who are willing and able to undertake it. This video is only meant to show the complete novice how she might wear a kimono and obi to an informal affair, where being dressed "correctly" is not at issue. (And I apologize for miss-speaking in the video when I say that the deceased in Japan are buried - they are, of course, cremated.)

Does the underwear kimono sleeve length match the outside kimono?

Yes, the juban sleeve is supposed to fit snugly in the over kimono sleeve. If the underkimono sleeve is too long, I have seen it hemmed so it does fit. We always give the measurement of the juban sleeve so folks know if it will fit inside their over kimono.

Kimono was introduced to Japan by Korean monk as funeral clothing in plain tan material color which Japenise copied it to make it into their own clothing with coloring because they had none. Japenise history only go back 2000 years compare to 5000 years for Korea.
