Make a piece of colonial wood siding with the table saw, and repair the barn by Jon Peters

  • www.jonpeters.com/ small piece of siding on the barn was rotting and needed to be replaced. Rather than buying a long piece from the lumber yard and being left with a big cut off that would no doubt hang around the barn for a few years. I decided to make the siding out of a small piece of pine, using the table saw.

I have been looking for this 6” siding and found out it’s also called Dutch or German cove siding. Great job!!

After watching your technique, I was able to use it to produce a pretty good match on the 70 year old house I am renovating. I ended up buying 1x8x12 PT and milling it to match the existing on the house. For just a few hours of work, I was able to produce a $37 board for just under $12. It matches well enough and with a little paint, it will last for years to come. Thanks for the idea!

What I really like about your videos is watching how you use your tools to create really cool effects. Thanks Jon. Oh and my son Nathanael reckons you are pretty special too. He asked me whilst watching this with me, Dad, can be like Jon Peters when I grow up. So you've got another fan now Jon.

Sweet a barn video. Really like how you made that cove with the table saw. Thanks for sharing.

Brilliant! I would have never thought of cutting sideways to replicate the groove. I am a restoring a 1939 garage with the exact same siding in this video.

Interesting technique with the table saw. Now I'd be interested to see more ways you can create moldings and designs. Keep up making these type of videos.

Great demo video. I was planning on just rabbiting the siding on a coop I'm making but I might test out your method here for the colonial method. Thanks!

Cool trick using the table saw. Regarding the red paint, red never does good painted over white. Using a gray primer would have worked a lot better.

Excellent job 👏 I should’ve painted white, it looked nice like a continuous white line across,

great video, guessing that is your daughter in the end, so cute :)
I think that's why I don't mind doing painting and helping with the woodwork, My Dad used to let me help 50+ years ago lol. Sometimes he would tell me to go to the basement and get him a can of elbow grease :D

I have a 1910 carriage house that I use as my wood shop and it has this same colonial style siding. Thank you so much for showing how to mill the replica siding, I just figured I'd never be able to make some needed repairs! Have you done any videos on stabilizing old barns, mine could definitely use that too : )

What side it's the blade you used? My wood siding it's 12 inches wide so you think I can use the same size blade?
    Thank you

  • @wickedmessenger1

Siding should only be nailed near the bottom. The top of the board gets held on by the board above. That allows each board to expand and contract inside the rabbet of the board above. Double nailing as you have done can strain the board to the point where it splits from expanding and contracting and that will open up a crack for water to get in. The same goes for all types of siding, not just the type you recreated in this video. Also, on a large job you use half as many nails, which saves both money and time.

    • @The77zman
      @The77zman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

wickedmessenger1 No- you need to follow code. In some places that means up to 3 nails per board.

Great video. Tip for future repairs; using a gray tined primer instead of white helps get the true red color with fewer coats.

Love the trick to make some molding with the saw. Well I guess it isnt a trick, but definitely makes it doable with a one man shop.

This is the same technique I used at mom's 1960 house 20 years ago. Instead of regular pine I used treated wood which has not rotted since!

Wow that's awesome that you made your own. Any chance of kickback by running the wood diagonally through the table saw? I'm lucky because my local Home Depot has 105 siding in stock.

9 years later but Jon might have left it white, as it seems a little flush with the white of the door and might be somewhat nicely idiosyncratic. But ok sure, paint the entire barn that new red color. LOL
...So did you paint it yet?
...But I like that sideways tablesaw 'routering' use.
