Great video... Steven Spielberg's ingenuity in creating suspense deserves praise. This is one of the best apocalyptic themed alien invasion movies.Visually impressive...
Nicolas, I want to thank you for crafting such an insightful video. This is one of my favorite movies, and I'm glad to see someone talk about its artistic brilliance.
The amount of focus on "every day life" and how busy and chaotic it is, to compare to the apocalyptic quiet and emptiness the world becomes is just. So SO impactful.
One other common feature of Spielberg films is the "simultaneous dialogue", which I find intensifies the scenes for whatever purpose, be it comedic or suspenseful. For example, in War of the Worlds, there are very short instances of this between Vincent and Julio, Ray's two buddies, and the beginning of the film as they discuss the solar flare. Another example is when Ray is making peanut butter sandwiches. It happens periodically throughout the film; characters talk over one another creating this confusing effect. In Close Encounters of the Third Kind, it happens a bit more frequently, an example being Roy and his family all talking over one another, with as many as four characters talking at once. And, in Jaws, there are sporadic moments of this simultaneous dialogue, specifically in the scene on the dock when the fisherman catch a tiger shark and have it on display for the crowd. I've always liked this little feature of Spielberg's films...
I Know exactly what you mean especially about jaws scene...I think this is Spielberg way of making audience to be more immersed And make them Listen that main characters have something important to say while someone is talking over them And other characters in movie is ignoring them it makes movie dialogue/conversation And exposition more realistic.
I would say his documentary style of camera work took off after all he learned in Schindlers List, with Kaminski. Since then he’s brought his skills all together rather elegantly and masterfully. Solid video and thanks for posting!
A video that's almost 2 years old and is being recommended to me. Immediately the first 30 seconds I'm enjoying the heck out of this video! I hope more people notice this video. The only thing that bothers me is the lack of a background voice, but I don't mind the subtitles. This is a really well done video!
I think I mostly enjoyed this version but wasn’t wild about the design of the actual tripods and I thought the heat ray lacked any kind of real weight. People just seemed to go poof rather than burn up.
Do you know they went with the saturated whites in Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, and this film? It kind of makes sense in SPR, making the film look aged. And it kind of makes sense in MR for the opposite reason, but I don't understand its use here. Sorry if it is obvious to film students - I'm just a layman here.
Jurassic Park clip was used to show similarities to a War of the Worlds scene shown in this video, to show what Spielberg was going for in both movies.

This movie created different feel with the unwavering knife of the reality of helplessness...
...like the scene of thousands crying out in terror

At 9:10 what scene was that
This movie is pretty much saying is nothing is safe
It should be Janusz Kaminski, not Januzs Kaminski ;D

You've never heard of Jurassic Park during War of the Worlds huh??? I just don't know about human beings anymore!!!
