How I became a ‘rural doctor’ in China’s remote Nujiang Valley

  • For those who have very little in life, good health is great wealth. But what happens when there's no doctor in sight? This used to be the reality of residents in Pengdang, a remote alpine town in southwest China's Yunnan Province. Sick people would have to travel hundreds of kilometers of rugged terrain to get medical help.
How has poverty alleviation via health care benefitted underserved communities like Pengdang? What role do doctors there play and why does their job go beyond just treating patients? Watch our new #JobChallenge documentary.#China #poor #health

@Salted Nats Did you watch the half hour video to the end? Did you see what the doctors and nurses did? They climbed mountains for two hours to remote villages to give free medical consultations and aids then walk another two hours down the mountain back to the van waiting for them at the foot of the mountain. They were doing everything they can to help the poor villagers and all you can think of is "approaching innocent vulnerable children more than anything else". The world you live in has some very serious social issues. Why don't you folo Nadim by going to Gongshun village and volunteer to help those doctors and nurses for a month and do something positive and meaningful instead?

And to think my former colleagues made fun of me when I would go to migrant camps, volunteering to do free health checks, provide insulin and regular meds like for blood pressure. We drove and walked down dirt roads-it they were flat. The most danger we were ever in was encountering alligators occasionally. We were warned that it wasn’t safe “because they are just migrant workers from Mexico”-insinuating they were somehow criminals, drug users or “drunks”. Instead, I adored those hard working people, never saw anything criminal, any drug use. I loved doing it because those people couldn’t get help at local hospitals unless it was an emergency; and I would hope our visits prevented some emergencies.
I would suggest China work more on relocating these folks, especially the elderly; or improving access. But, I’m sure they are probably already working on that.

This happened to my mother every time she went to have her blood pressure checked, so the results weren't actually accurate. We bought her a blood pressure machine to use at home, so it would be less stressful and she could do it herself. The home readings were much lower and closer to normal. I expect these poor folk were very stressed, more so living in such isolation from society with no education about science or medicine. Hope they took the advice of the doctors.

China is admirable when it comes to bringing development to the most isolated villages in their country...something other asian countries should learn from. HIgh blood pressure is such a silent killer. MOst old folks in rural villages like that stubborn old man usually don't understand the importance of medication. I hope they give them free equipments so the mountain people can check their own BP since they cant visit frequently.

I hope conditions improve for the villages and easier access for doctors too. Maybe money be out to make a better path to the villages or even a helicopter pad if possible. Telecom services for villagers to doctors etc. To name a few.

In China, there are millions of villages like this one in the video.
Lots of villages were road connected already.
for the rest, some of them, the villagers would love to move to the remote villages that the government built for them with complete infrastructure. Some of them would not be willing to move due to cultural heritages so that doctors have to climb up mountains to see them.

Mountain weather & helipad don't go well together. And can you even see a patch of flat land in those remote villages for a helipad? The money, time, skill & personnel required to set up a helicopter service is immense! Even in developed countries, air ambulance services are a very limited resource. Its better to invest in basic infrastructure. Let's walk first before we start thinking about flying.

Economically these people living in the top of mountains should be relocated in to a better places. People escaped into mountains in the past due to wars and ethnic conflicts. With a strong government and urbanization now, China can afford to relocate these people.

    • @qijunwang1097
      @qijunwang1097 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It can be very difficult to relocate rural communities. This is because of the root & ancestry mentality that's ingrained in the Chinese mind. People are reluctant to leave the land they've farmed for generations (even if its small & have very poor yield, if they have land they have food), the place their ancestors are buried. Only when all their lives are at risk (like in the past due to war, severe famine or natural disasters) they may be willing to leave. At present, although they are very impoverished, they can still live, therefore can be very reluctant to leave.

chinese govt actually does relocating these remote people
they build and give the remote people free housing near other villages/major road/towns, teach/offer them some new start business financially and technically, so that u can still survive in new environment
but some of these remote population live there for generations and dont want to relocate

There youtube videos here of Cina alleviation where communities are moved to better communities complete with houses, jobs, schools, etc. There is even a mountaintop community and the only access ther is a dangerous steep cliff with wooden ladders. They moved most of the community, who wanted to move, to a better community and built a safer all-steel stairway ladder for those who preferred to stay behind.
