Forging a Planing Stop

  • The planing stop is one of the simplest and yet most effective and easy-to-use accessories to a hand tool woodworker's bench. If you plan to do much hand-planing, a planing stop/bench hook of some kind is a must. There are many simple and easy ways to have some sort of stop, but in this video we forge a planing stop inspired by Roubo's 18th-century work "L'art du Menusier" or "The Art of the Carpenter/Cabinetmaker", and then dress it up a bit with some filed embellishment inspired by some of the "brightwork" of the period. For more on the Roubo-style planing stop, do some quick searches for planing stops and Roubo's Plate 11. For more on the actual installation of a planing stop, check out this article from Lost Art Press:

I love the sound of your videos! Just a hammer against steel. No music, no machinery, just a crackling fire and a ringing anvil.

Great job! Wonderful to see a smith made tool for woodworking, that is also very well designed, which is not often the case! That up angle should permit even very slim stock to be planed as the stop's block can be well down inside the bench.

Thanks Josh! Exactly. And that is exactly what Roubo says about the angle of the top!

Lovely! I really enjoyed the filling part, the more I learn about blacksmithing the more fascinated I become with filling. It can be very therapeutic

Great video Jordan (glad you had someone available to video while you worked!). Always enjoy your work and this was especially satisfying to watch to see your approach and technique. Clean forging and very nice file work! Guess you need another vise for file work (add to your long list of stuff that needs to be done!). Keep up the great work and best wishes for you and your family!

Thank you! Yes! As a matter of fact, there will probably be a total of 6 or so vises when the shop is finished.

Nice vido, stand on a pallet or something like that if the vise height makes you uncomfortable :)
