  • The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers Movie Reaction. So today I'll be continuing our journy the cursed land of Mordor and follow the quest of Hobbits, Humans, Elves, and Dwarves for a reaction to The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers. Yes, this is my first time watching this movie. After many years of waving it off as some overhyped project I can truly understand why so many people love it. I hope you enjoy my reaction of The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers.

In the books Aragorn made the attempt to save Gandalf but the arch of the bridge was broken and Gandalf's hold was even more tenuous.

Gandalf is not a mortal man that is a wizard, he's actually a low level Angel called a Maiar in the form of an old wizard.
It's the same with the other wizard Saruman the White he's also a Maiar.
The Balrog that Gandalf kills is also a Maiar but it was corrupted and turned into a demon of fire and shadow by the first Dark Lord Morgoth the former master of the current Dark Lord Sauron.

Just so you're aware, there are five wizards, two blue wizards, one brown, one grey, and one white. The white wizard is supposed to be the "highest" of them all, and act as the "general" if we're talking in military terms. Since Saruman became evil, and Gandalf sacrificed his life, the God of this world, promoted Gandalf to a white wizard so that he will be the most powerful, and out rank saruman. That is a VERY in a nutshell explanation, but you will get the point.

To be fair Jackson abd the studio saved some money by spending 2+ years filming all 3 movies at the same time then releasing 1 movie a year. Almost the entire cast lived in New Zealand while filming for 2 years. Others like Andy Sirkis had other commitments and had to juggle filming schedules so they were back and forth between countries. Before the cast arrived and After they went home the crew still had work to do with special effects, building sets and editing but what they pulled off was amazing.
Think of Gandalf's return in gaming terms. Gandalf the Grey died and was leveled up to Gandalf the White when he returned. The colors represent different levels of power in wizards who are actually more heavenly being (think angel) than what we consider magical wizards. Saruman was the White but he let himself be corrupted and turned away from the role that Eru Illuvitar assigned him so Eru Illuvitar upgraded Gandalf who had never strayed from his duty to the White Wizard to replace Saruman. Saruman then became Saruman of Many Colors instead of the White Wizard.
Dwarves do better fighting on the ground with their battle axes. Dwarves and horses don't exactly work well together because dwarves aren't built for riding nor are they accustomed to it.

And the scene when Aragorn deflected the thrown knife was real. Of course it wasn't scripted this way, but Peter Jackson (that bastard 😆) liked it and so it survived the cut.

Saruman has been settled in Orthanc tower at Isengard for 2,000 years. The Horse Lords were only granted the Gap of Rohan 500 before by Gondor when the area was depopulated by war and disease. There's little that Grima could tell Saruman he doesn't already know..
Aragorn has foresight nothing like his 6,000 years removed Uncle Elrond Half-Elven, but if he gets a strong hunch he trusts it. It's telling him Grima has something to do, along with his dislike of unnecessary killing, he stopped Theoden from killing him.

Gandalf while appearing as an old man is actually an angelic being known as a Maiar.
The Ainur, also known as the Holy Ones, were beings encompassing both the Valar (of higher rank) and the Maiar. They were the first and mightiest beings created by Eru Ilúvatar (Tolkien's name for God) long before the beginning of the World.
After the creation of the One Ring (in the second age) and the subsequent rise of Sauron, the Valar hold council in which they decide to send a group of Maiar known as the Istari, as an order of powerful wizards, disguised as old men, with the quest of uniting the Free People of Middle-earth against the power of the second Dark Lord Sauron, restricting the use of their power to interfere directly in Middle-earth and why you don't see Gandalf using his full strength (aka magic) openly except occasionally. Sauron, like the Balrogs were beings essentially the same rank as the Istari but that had become corrupted and fallen into darkness.

The extended edition of TTT has two important scenes - don't know if you have looked for the scenes online after reacting - one emphasises that Faramir has daddy issues, or more accurately his dad has Faramir issues while idolising Boromir. The film played up on that to make Faramir more tempted by the Ring than he was in the book (where he still had daddy issues). It's a change some book readers hate. I quite like it, if only because the book version makes Faramir inappropriately incorruptible in a story that stresses that evil can get to every human.

Enjoyed watching the movie with you! We won't see movies like this again; things that are done today with CGI were done in LOTR using practical effects. Treebeard for example was an enormous puppet that took a crew of a dozen or so to move around; the only CGI was in his facial features. They put bicycle seats in the palms of his hands for Merry and Pippin to sit on--excruciatingly uncomfortable, according to Billy and Dom. Helm's deep was built in a stone quarry; it had several parts built to different scales for close-ups or longer shots. When filming was finished, they tore it down and built Minas Tirith (which we'll see in ROTK) in its place. And when THAT was done, they reused some of the architectural bits for the ruins on Weathertop we saw in FOTR (the three movies were shot simultaneously). Waste not, want not...

What's interesting about these books is how Tolkien didn't really make people evil. Sauron is evil and his evil corrupts others. Saruman willingly embraces this because he is a Maia like Sauron and the Balrog, and he sees that Sauron's victory is inevitable, while Gandalf, also a Maia, trusts to hope in the plans of Eru Illuvitar and stays true to his calling. But most people (humans, elves, hobbits, etc.) are not really evil. They are often weak or deceived. Many like Gollum are tragic and to be pitied.
In fact, in the movies, Jackson gives characters such as Theodin MORE flaws to give them traditional arcs and character growth. Theodin in the books is older and wiser and from the beginning is more like you see him at the end of this movie and in the next one. But while they stumble from the power of evil and the ring, which is too overwhelming to resist, many characters who seem crazy or evil in the films you find out in the books are noble, decent men often driven to madness in some way by Sauron in their pursuit to stop him. Tolkien believed we must bear our burdens the best we can but that evil will assail us, yet if we hold true, good will win in the end and we'll be forgiven our sins and failings. "And that is an encouraging thought"

Gollum/Sméagol was portrayed by Andy Serkis, every glance, every expression and every movement of Gollum/Sméagol is his. It was done with a process called motion capture. Look it up for a much better and more thorough explanation than I could give you. Andy Serkis actually got to physically play the part of Gollum/Sméagol opposite Elijah Wood and Sean Astin, so they weren’t just having to act to a green screen or imagine where Gollum might be as they were filming. The motion capture process is why he looks so real. I thought Andy Serkis deserved a special Oscar for his work. Even Peter Jackson was amazed at some of the facial expressions when he watched film back. The moment when Frodo says Gollum’s forgotten name and he says, “What did you call me?” PJ was freaked out by the true e press ion they got on his face.

I understand there's a lot of wonderful practical effects but to say there's almost no CGI is astoundingly wrong. Fell beasts, the balrog, ents, padding numbers for epic battles. The green ghost army and the ghosts in the dead marshes. Did you think they somehow made hundreds of translucent glowing ghosts and operated them practically?

Explanation for Gandalf: Gandalf is one of 5 Maiar (immortal spirits analogous to angels) who were sent to Middle Earth in a previous age to keep an eye on Sauron and to guide people in resisting him, they took the physical forms of Men. Maiar don’t “die” as their true forms are incorporeal. Rather than returning to his creator when he lost his corporeal form, Gandalf was rewarded for his sacrifice and put back into his body with along with more power.

Peter Jackson was given $320 million to do all three films. He hoped to get the money for at least two, Bob Shaye of New Line asked him didn’t he want to do three films! Jackson said, “Yes, please!” Shaye said he had a bit of pause when he looked around at the posters in PJ’s office of the strange films he was known for and doing at the time.
