The pinyin is desgined to be like this, a little faded, because all vocabulary used in the lessons are taught in previous lessons and levels and it helps students to get used to reading characters and not rely on Pinyin. He and she are written differently (他 and 她), but pronounced the same. Méi signifies past tense.
