- This year, in 2024, Anna and I will be hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)! The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail is 2,650 miles long, stretching from the Mexican border near Campo, California, all the way to Manning Park at the Canadian border in British Columbia. We're not hiking part of it. We're hiking the whole thing! In this video we go over our logistics, perspective, training, and more. This will be the backpacking trip of a lifetime!
Looks like you're pretty well prepared. Your physical fitness should be fine. I attempted the trail last year. I made it 750 miles, but the snow was just ridiculous. Your choice to not send a lot of resupply boxes is good. You never know what you will like or not like once you are out on the trail. Often times your tastes will change when you get on the trail, and you will get cravings for things you would never it in normal life.
I would say to work on efficient walking. Work on making sure your muscles are relaxed as possible when walking. Also, think of your leg as a pendulum as it swings forward during your stride. Just let it swing forward, don't put it out there. Play with it a little. You'll see what I mean.
When I was vlogging my trip last year people seemed to like the director view mode in my phone camera. It shows what I am looking at and puts a picture in picture of my face as well.
Good luck out there!
Wow! All great info. Thanks for sharing! Looks like snow won’t be as much of an issue this year, so the only thing that might stop us is ourselves. I’ll keep the efficient walking in mind. Even though we’re already in good shape we do plan on starting pretty moderately to get our bodies used to it. Cheers! 🍻
Congratulations can’t wait to follow your hike! You’ll crush the desert section for sure. 🎉
Thank you! Hoping the desert section will be a breeze for us. We do plan on starting pretty moderately though.
Just stumbled on to your channel, got caught up on your prep and episode 1 vids, hit subscribe and I am pumped to follow your journey this summer. Stay safe, have fun and enjoy the beauty.
Thank you so much! Welcome aboard!
God luck. Keep trekking. 😀
Thank you!
Either April 2nd or 25th, depending how the snowpack plays out. As of now, leaning more toward earlier because you can start slower and there are more hikers and trail magic and the desert isn’t sweltering hot (less rattlers and more water sources). Say hi if you catch me on the trail.
It’ll be a great experience with either date! Benefits to both. Have a great hike! We’ll keep an eye out. Cheers 🍻
Most excellent! The wonderland is on our list, as is the PCT! At this time we are section hiking the PCT and PNT. Look forward to seeing your journey!
Section hiking is probably the more practical way to do it haha. The PNT is on my list! Have fun!
The PNT is amazing: not all of it is as majestic (although Glacier and North Cascades are), but talk about a wild adventure!@@justinhitsthetrail5225
I'm looking forward to watching your hike. My suggestion would be daily vlogs like your JMT videos, instead of weekly. I think it's pretty hard to jam an entire week, 60 - 70 hours of hiking into one video, and do it justice. Everyday's an adventure on the PCT. It's a shame to miss documenting any of it. Good luck with your thru hike. 😎👍
Thank you! The JMT and PCT are two different beasts. I edited the JMT videos when I was back and at a computer. I want to document the PCT as we go, which will mean quick phone edits. I don’t see myself having the energy to do daily videos on the trail, but we’ll see what happens once we’re out there. Either way, I’ll put something bigger together after the trail. Cheers 🍻
Daily vlogs are too much work. Weekly is plenty. When doing a real long thru-hike it’s too difficult to find time every single day to commit to video editing and uploading.
@@SophisticatedDogCat I guess it depends on how serious you are about TH-cam. You don't have to make any videos if you don't want to. The majority of TH-cam thru hikers I watch make daily videos, or at least every other day. As I said I think it's pretty hard to jam an entire week, 60 - 70 hours of hiking into one video, and I think it would be hard for your channel to grow that way. Daily videos are 700% more content then weekly videos. A channel with 700% more content is probably going to grow faster. Not necessarily, but probably. Anyway I just mentioned it because I watched some of Justin's Daily JMT videos, and was impressed with the quality. It looked like that format would work well for the PCT as well, so I suggested it. Either way I wish him the best of luck with the hike and with the videos. 👍
Just started following your vids. Rumors are floating around that Jango is coming along. Both of you will be loading him up with all the gear. lol. Just a joke. All the best on the PCT. Have a great time. Great attitude!
Thank you! Haha one night trips are enough work with Django! He gets some dog sitters! Cheers 🍻
Hope you post frequent updates; your Wonderland video inspired me to plan a trip there. Would like to follow along as best fits your schedule and logistics. I was initially worried about Django, so thanks for mentioning him.
Django will be in good hands! I’ll post updates when I can so stay tuned!
Exciting. I lost track of your channel for a while and just reconnected with your Wonderland Trail video which was great. I know it can become a grind at some point, but I hope you'll be able to vlog - would love to follow along. Happy trails!
Well welcome back! I do plan on doing a weekly (or so) vlog on the trail and putting something bigger together after. Cheers 🍻
Can’t wait to watch your adventure. Get it……
Good luck! It's such an amazing adventure!
Thank you! Can’t wait!
Lucky!!
Awesome! So excited for you guys!
Thank you!
See you in Sierra City at Pacific Crest Hike & Bike Club☝️😁
Can’t wait!
Looking forward to your videos. I like your approach. Hike it the whole way!
I am hiking the PCT starting later this month and I am excited! I will try to Vlog however my #1 priority is to enjoy the trail, people, and towns and make it as far as I can. I will do a long video after I complete the hike for sure. After doing 1170 miles of the PCT last year I think I have a good chance to make it all the way to Canada. I know what I am getting into and this year is a normal snow year. I will be giving it 150%. Looks like you two live in AZ I am a native. Keep an eye out for me a say hello you may catch me you never know. Take it easy and have fun. You will have a great hike.
Love it. We also plan on enjoying the people and towns as much as possible. It’s absolutely part of the experience. Good luck on your hike! We’ll keep an eye out for you! Cheers 🍻
Awsome video, I’m hiking the pct this year , trying to vlog it , I’m pretty much expecting everything to go wrong and be a train wreck lol. Good luck on your journey
I’m sure everything won’t go wrong… just not as planned! At least that’s what we’re expecting. Good luck to you!
Everything goes wrong on the PCT. It’s finding creative solutions on the fly that keep you going. What is your start date?
@@PhoenixGenesis yes i pretty much expect that April 7th yourself?
I replied, see below on my start date. As to clogging, there is was so much cell reception last year, that I was able to upload while at the top of peaks as I went along. In 2017, there hardly any cell service.
@@HikingHalfdead April 6th here. See you!
Looking forward to following along and hearing about your progress! Be safe!
Going to be epic!
I wish you well remember hike your own hike happy trails (walkingman)
Thank you!
Daily video would be great but do what you can
I gave it serious thought, but I’m glad I didn’t. Takes a lot of time as is. Trying to do two videos a week.
Hope one day ill get the chance we will see.
You can do this!
Nice to run into you in the Supes! I’m excited for your journey!
It was great to meet you! I couldn’t be more excited! Cheers 🍻
You can nearly go across Oregon getting your food from hiker boxes and save a lot of money on food. Washington State you should definitely send resupply boxes it is more difficult to get to towns to resupply. Being that I am currently filling up five resupply boxes for the AZT I can definitely appreciate not wanting to do a lot of resupply boxes. Good luck to you two "the trail does provide"
Good to know, especially about Washington. We’ll put together a few boxes to be sent to us, but trying to do that as little as possible. Good luck on the AZT! I’ve never thru hiked it but I’ve done a lot of hiking on it. Beautiful trail! Cheers 🍻
When you hit deep creek hot springs.. let me know if you guys need anything. I’m pretty close and would be happy to help support
Much appreciated!
starting end of April, see ya out there!
Good luck on your hike! See you on the trail! Cheers 🍻
Good Luck
Thank you!
HELL YEAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!
3:57 This is what I would call an attempt to thru-hike - if you succeed, it will be a thru-hike.
Class of 2024, start in 4 weeks, you will pass me somewhere.
We realize it’s truly an attempt when it comes down to it. We just want to have an ambitious attitude. Sounds like we’ll be starting shortly after you. See you on the trail! Cheers 🍻
I’m also starting the pct in late April, maybe I’ll see you guys out there. Having a few issues with leg pain / cramps which has come about out of the blue so I’m worried I won’t be on top of that situation before I go. Hoping to do 700+ miles this year, the same as last year which ended at San Jacinto due to another injury. Definitely taking it slow this time and getting my base weight down much less than last time.
Hope to see you out there! Do whatever you can to take care of that leg pain and hike at whatever pace is comfortable. No need to push it. Good luck to you!
Look into Global Rescue. I use it all the for hiking. It covers all your cost for being rescued anywhere in the world. Including helicopter rescue, hospitals etc. and it's very reasonable.
What is your start date
Starting in a few days. Insurance is already paid for but I’ll keep it mind for the future. Thank you!
Just curious if the two of you have talked about a situation where one of you physically can no longer continue on the PCT, will the other continue on or also call it quits? My guess is that this type of situation does arise more often than most would think on such a long journey that could take five or more months time.
That’s an important topic, and we have had that discussion! We’ll be doing pulse checks as we go to make sure we’re still on the same page.
When are you coming to Idyllwild
Hard to say exactly when but it will likely be early May.
Instagram account? I like to follow there too.
