Why don't they just sell The OS as its own product? I understand that their entire thing is selling enterprise level hardware and capabilities in terms of redundancy. However, wouldn't be viable to sell the OS for a $500 to $1000 a license to put on consumer level hardware for people who don't care about the professional hardware and redundancy. I think a lot of people would pay either a subscription or a hefty fee of $1000 a license if it gets them into the Kaleidescape ecosystem. I just think trying to sell hardware that tied to a software is a dumb business model.
That would be a question for Kaleidescape. Only they would know if that is something they would ever consider.
I believe they have an agreement with the studios to protect the studios IP and make sure those movies aren’t shared illegally. If they let users download the movies to any hard drive I imagine it would be much easier to copy them. Hardware tied to software works pretty well for Apple! They aren’t selling storage drives that are a cheap commodity, they are selling a premium movie watching experience that you can’t find anywhere else. The drives and OS look incredibly high quality and I hope to be able to afford one someday!
That’s a great explanation
Man, the cost of entry is nuts on this. For me, I’m good buying discs on movies I really like and just streaming what I don’t truly care about.
Once you watch a movie on K and see the same content on streaming or DVD you’ll understand why the cost of entry is where it is. You can’t un-see it, lol!
Your drinking the kool-aid man. Blu ray is just as good at the same cost. But it's your media. Kaleidescape is a proprietary system that probably won't last because the the cost. One they go under who owns your movies? All that money will be down the drain. I'll stick with my own server and pay a 10th of what they are charging.
@@saltlife1349 Please stop
I think it’s not for everyone and it is a luxury product but man…I don’t buy the argument some of the user of K makes about its quality exceeding Blu-ray Disc.
The file sizes can be larger on Kaleidescape as physical media have max storage capacity. But I doubt anyone could tell a difference when sitting at your primary listening / viewing position between say a 4K disk and a 4K Kaleidescape media.
Paid $250 for a 8TB hdd for my movies that I use with Plex. I could literally buy 5 more 8TB hdd's for $1250 and have 48TB. Someone is smoking some serious crack asking $20,000
Personally, I'd say that with the Strato V you're paying for *too much* storage. If the argument follows that there's no need to have a large library of movies on your drive, then there's really no need to be able to hold more than one. Maybe two or three, tops. Whichever way you look at it, the Strato V is really a "watch & delete" machine: As such, I see it as a device for the general consumer - but priced for higher-end enthusiasts.
Honestly, the Strato V internal storage is plenty. You can download a movie in less than 10 mins. It’s takes a bit more planning and juggling, but for the amount of money you save, I will take that trade off any day.
Yes, adding a tear prime server is all about convenience. If you can spare 10 minutes, the Strato V by itself is still phenomenal.
User inferface looked too underwhelming when I seen it in person. For that price it should atleast have the actual kaleidascope experience
I agree there’s nothing fancy about the user experience with the Strato V but having the full Kaleidescape poster wall doesn’t make sense when you only have 10 movies. Repeating those 10 movies to fill up an entire poster wall would look cheesy. Even a list view of 10 movies would look super bare. My recommendation would be to have at least some type of background so that it wouldn’t look so empty, especially on a massive cinema scope screen.
Quick question. Can you connect another server brand to this via network? Like if I have an old media server and wanna add this media server to my collection and join them both can I do that? If not that's a feature that they really should consider. Would be easy since this is on the network to grab movies and download them etc..
So you don’t really own the downloaded file since you can’t edit, convert, or adjust in any way with video editor like you would with uncompressed MkV bluray rips correct?
You don’t own your ripped movies. Remember that FBI warning at the beginning of the movie that states it’s illegal to copy the movie?
@@Youthman It´s not illegal to make a backup copy of a movie that you have purchased on disc. At least not in Denmark where I live. You can then put the backup on a NAS and play it via Plex. Really easy and fast ;-)
@janthomassrensen1065 it is illegal in the US because you have to bypass the DRM (Digital Rights Management). Thats why Zappiti NAS was shut down in the US.
I currently have 24TB of storage on my Kaleidescape system. I have been tempted😆 to add more, but I think I am good at the moment.
I think no matter how much storage we have, we'll figure out a way to fill it up. LOL.
How long did it take you to fill up 24 TB?
@@DraftHero It’s been 4 years now and I have about 20% storage left. I am now an empty nesters 🎉with more time to enjoy my theater.
Congrats on being an empty nester! We are getting close to that ourselves. Only two daughters left and in college.
How much loss is there with video an audio with compression compared to disc?
If you were talking about ripping your own content, depends on how much compression is applied. Kaleidescape receives the lossless mezzanine file from the studios.
Kaleidescape is way to expensive. I’d rather buy my movies.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I wish it was less expensive as well.
Hey youthman. I was wondering if you’re still rocking the nx7. I want to demo it before buying and don’t know anyone that has one. I live in Wesley Chapel, FL next to the Epperson lagoon. Thanks for all the helpful videos over the years.
No I upgraded to the NZ8 and now the NZ800.
With the download speed you really don’t need that much storage. Just have a few movies queued up and you’re good to go. Honestly if Apple TV bumped their storage to 256 Gb and allowed you to download 2 full sized movies that would work just as well.
I don’t think Apple has lossless audio and video though.
@@Youthman They can do lossless music so I am sure they have the horse power under the hood. Not sure about the video. That said pretty sure this is not a priority for them at this point since it’s a fairly niche marketplace.
I agree. Definitely not their priority which is why I don’t see AppleTV offering movies in lossless format.
If you have your lossless media ripped and saved on the server, Apple TV can pass through lossless audio to your AV receiver via Infuse Pro app. The problem is that it is limited DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD. It does not pass through height channels lossless. It is a limitation of the Apple TV hardware, not infuse. As said, Apple TV is powerful enough to support lossless 3D audio but I guess it is not Apple’s priority list as Youthman mentioned.
How much storage?? I need all the storage! Just upgraded to a 22TB Terra and it is glorious to have all of my content instantly available! At the rate I am going I will have this full in a couple of months.
They make a 123TB
Still a rich man's toy!
123TB should be enough for me.
Cut the price in half, double the storage, have it work over Wi-Fi, and Kaleidescape has a Strato V customer!
Anything else you would like?
@@Youthman Nope.
Ok just checking 😂
Just make a Plex server and save thousands of dollars i currently have a 48TB server and it has costed me about 2k USD it would cost 16k from these guys :/
Almost anything DIY will be much cheaper than a manufactured product. Kaleidescape isn't targeting the DIY community. For many, time is money. Time not learning how to rip 4K movies, building a NAS etc is worth the investment into the ecosystem that allows you to purchase, download and watch, all from the Kaleidescape app. So easy, the entire family can do it. You can't do that with PLEX.
The system, for me is simple. Streaming audio is terrible. i used to rent blu rays 4 or 5 at to watch new movies to experience the sound. These places don't exist. Now if I want to watch Fall Guy; with K Scape I don't have to pay 34.99 for a disk I may never watch again and have to worry about selling. I can rent if i want, or buy outright if need be. Getting the movies in the best quality possible, wihout having to fumble with disk menus, warnings, and quicker than streaming services is the only reason it appeals to me. My time is worth way more than theamount of tme i would spend archving, buying, ripping, storing, etc.
@@Youthman Yeah , you can. You can do all of this with PLEX easily. My kids literally stick a blue ray disc into the PLEX server, and it will rip the disc and compress it, store it and setup all the meta data quickly and easily and have it loaded in PLEX. Yes, PLEX does require more setup time and the use of other applications within FreeNAS, but tons of TH-cam videos instructing you how to do it. It took me about 2 hours of watching videos to automate my whole system. At a fraction of the cost of a Kalidescape system...
That’s great that you have it set up to where your kids can rip your movies. I doubt most people have that system automated. You’ve got a system that works great for you and you’ve saved a lot of money. Thats a win.
Only 48TB?
Anyone know if you can link two of the 8TB servers together? Thx!
Do you think they will reduce the cost of the storage that’s the thing still putting me off, the new player strato V is within my price range but the storage is way to expensive
There’s no way to know. Only time will tell.
Kaleidoscape is such a suckers deal. $10k for 8TB?! Lol. I guarantee there is nothing special about these drives.
I need all of it
We sell it all - obsessedhometheater.com
I emailed them and a handful of other dealers on pricing and he was $500 more expensive than any other dealer. If you’re looking to get one of these, I would look elsewhere.
Maybe one day , we can all dream.
What is that Dolby Atmos movie that you have and how do you get that?
I got the hookup from Kaleidescape. It's some of the trailers (Amaze, Leaf etc). I believe they are working towards being able to add them directly to the Kaleidescape Store like they did with the Trinnov Trailers.
Hey Michael im not a klaleidescape user, but i do have my owen content and nas system but is there ever enough storage never lol
Definitely cannot have too much storage! 🤣
The avg. Person can't afford more than the 6tb they discontinued 🙄
Thank goodness they now have a $3995 model. 🤷♂️
@@Youthman not with 6tb storage 🤣
@@motogp3478 I agree with this. The Strato S was the better buy at $5500 for 6TB. The 1TB on the Strato V is pretty useless. That will barely handle your demo movie scripts. They lowered the price of entry as everyone was hoping for, but K is clearly using the Strato V as bait and hoping people will add a server and bring the cost of their system to $10k or more defeating the purpose of the lower cost of entry...
@adamjj85 truthfully I don’t think it matters what they do. People will still complain that it should be $400.
@@Youthman Yes I do agree with that. They catch a lot of heat. It seems like they have insane overhead costs. The studios must be ripping them off with crazy high content prices that forces their hardware to be so expensive that they had to strip the V's storage down so much to meet the $3995 price. The numbers just don't add up to us consumers.
15k...... yeah I think I'll stick with sd cards lolol.
I have a 12TB drive, has probably 55% filled. Idk why the vast majority of people need anything more than 6/8/12tb drives unless you’re on a yacht for extended periods of time. With the Strato/terra combo you can DL a movie in 7-10 minutes.
For the ultra wealthy, there's no reason not to purchase a massive Terra Prime server. But most of us, a smaller drive is sufficient, even if you have to offload some of your collection to make room for new movies.
That’s a big box .
Buy the disc 😅
Youthman: What you are promoting makes - no financial sense to anyone - IF - you already have individual dvd’s and a competent dvd player.
However, for someone - maybe just starting a movie collection and wants it in digital form, I suppose k-scape makes sense especially if the dvd’s you want are no longer available as physical media. It’s just a lot more expensive to do the collection process the k-scape way, and there are those who do not care about the extra expense; who want to be on the leading edge.
To each his own but given our dvd collection / and perfectly functioning 4K dvd player - k-scape makes no financial sense.
Marvin, physical media is still a great option for those that prefer that. But for someone that wants a turnkey solution to catalogue, organize and have easy access to any movie within their collection, Kaleidescape is the best solution.
I don't think anyone purchasing Kaleidescape does so because they want to be on the bleeding edge of technology. It's all about convenience, reliability, easy access to purchase new movies and knowing you have the absolute highest resolution audio and video possible.
Kaleidescape isn't for everyone. But it absolutely makes sense for high end systems.
@@Youthman Operative words are: “high-end” and where the industry is clearly headed. The concept of “selling budget-systems” has clearly “waned somewhat” with everyone now chasing the high-value customer it seems? This will work for a while, until this market segment too - dries up, eventually.
Most brands have a target audience. Kaleidescapes target audience has always been higher end customers.
Brands like Monoprice have always targeted budget consumers.
I’m not sure where you see every brand chasing high-value customers.
@@Youthman Well, “some” reviewers and some “brands”, for example, Epson has suddenly gone upscale with its most recent projectors. I would agree my assumption was a bit too presumptuous, but I seem to be seeing a trend, somehow.
OSD, Monoprice, Polk Audio, and many others remain budget. 🤷♂️
I get your a youtuber and its nice of you to go over new equipment and stuff which is cool .. but for me i can not for the life of me grasp the price point of this system ... the main problem with this system is the STORAGE price ... like come on 8TB for $5000 ... now a 8TB drive is say $300 .. make a unit where people can put their own drives into it like the Zidoo .. this will open the market greatly ..
The price is the biggest obstacle for most consumers. I wish they were more affordable myself. Kaleidescape, madVR, electronic masking, panamorph lenses, high end projectors etc are luxury items. Their target audience are typically high end systems. The Strato V was a huge step that opens up the door for so many new customers that previously would not have been able to afford a Kaleidescape system.
I do not know their books, but my understanding they make very little on the content, so the hardware is their main source of revenue. And they do not sell a product that customers will upgrade every year or two. It's more of a buy once cry once scenario.
I assume they have to be extremely careful what they do. If they create a product that can be hacked, every studio will immediately back out and they will be forced to close their doors. Having a closed, proprietary system allows them to have complete control of the security to ensure data cannot be hacked and then distributed illegally. Without that guarantee, Studios will not allow them access to their movies.
When you understand what the service is, you’ll understand the price point. Has almost zero to do with the storage.
@@Youthman I think my biggest issue with K-scape is they are so so niche… what happens if they fold shop? Apple and Netflix streaming gets better and better each year… and streaming doesn’t even come close to exceeding the bandwidth of my Fios connection up or down which already exceeds the mbs of UHD disc and K-scape maxes …. It’s actually far lower than the total bandwidth available to my connection, I know there’s server side bottlenecks and other variables but it’s getting better… Also streaming tech is pretty efficient in their compression tech and can do more with far less compared to the containers used by both physical and what Kscape uses, it gets 90% there … and I’m a physical media guy for a number of reasons cause it’s better than the streaming available and at least with discs if that market collapses I still have and own the disc…. If K-scape goes what happens to your library? Right now disc and Kscape are better but streaming can and will be just as good sooner than later. As someone who looks to invest for the future Kscape isn’t that, it’s what you said Michael a niche market I’ll go further it’s people with far more disposable incomes who don’t care after a year or so their library is gone and spending $10s of thousands of dollars they will just repay for it all cause money is no object. That’s why for me Kscape is a No-scap and we have a very healthy income household but not F U money. If I thought there would be a long term future for the product I would strongly consider it but I also don’t like the idea that they lock you out of basic storage options that aren’t theirs… but that’s the only way their business model even works which for me screams waaaay to dependent on overpaying niche audiences.
You have some valid points. JTR is extremely niche and has a much smaller infrastructure than Kaleidescape. On the flipside, I have seen MASSIVE corporations close up shop. The reality is any business can "fold shop". I personally do not see Netflix or even Apple offering bit for bit streaming. It would be cost prohibitive, especially since very few of their customers even have a descent setup to enjoy it on. I don't care how you frame it, current streaming is garbage. Both in audio and video quality.
Nothing wrong with physical media...until they "fold shop". It's already in the works as we speak.
You are correct, Kaleidescape is a luxury product, often for high end systems. They are not marketing to the masses.
As far as having a long term future, that is not a guarantee with any company. But they have been in business since 2001 and are still in business in 2024.
16k for 48tb using generic ssd. I definitely need to create a cheaper alternative for the masses
If you’re able to make a cheaper alternative, let me know. I’d love to check it out. Kaleidescape has been the only company that has attempted this since 2001. My guess is it’s nowhere near as easy as people think it is to accomplish or there would be several other brands doing the same thing.
@@Youthman do you have to pay for individual movies or you only pay for hardware with Kaleidoscope?
You you need to purchase or rent your movies. They do offer a disk to digital program that provides a reduced price if you own the physical disc.
Awesome Review 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you kindly
Hello Michael😊
Hi Michael
Irrelevant to 90% of the ht market. Totally unaffordable
Even if you can afford it- it's still a sucker's deal.
Their target audience is the 10%.
Cool
Not in australia, dont they want my money ?.I use zidoo and 70TB of HDD.....
Matt is currently working on Canadian distribution for Obsessed Garage. Next, he will work on Australian distribution. Once he has that set up, we might be able to hook you up with Kaleidescape.
I hope it’s just the camera cause your projectors picture looks like sh**. Looks green and dim.
